Title: age old question to sell or part out modified bike?
Post by: foggy123 on May 30, 2016, 09:39:42 PM
Unfortunately for me, its time to move on.  I've had my run and now its time for other toys.  this one has been sitting for to long.

So whats the consensus?  part out or sell outright in regards to highly modified monster that cant be made stock?

Give us a look.
Some customs with wow factor sell well. Others are better parted.

I don't like seeing Ducatis parted out unless they have reached a state/condition where they can no longer usable or too forgone to be restored at a reasonable cost.  Just my opinion.

I would say that if money is a high priority, I would part it out.  I have never found a buyer willing to pay the same percentage of original cost for all the high dollar additions to my custom bikes than I have buyers willing to pay when they buy the parts individually.

If the bike has $5,000 worth of goodies on it (new, retail) I'll typically get 55~60% of that back selling separately, and be lucky to get 35~40% of it back selling the bike with the parts on it.

However, I don't part out the whole bike; I've allways reinstalled stock parts and sold the bike in "closer to stock" condition.  I've even gone so far as to buy used stock parts (where I didn't save them or didn't have them to begin with) and install them, in order to sell the bike whole and the aftermarket parts separately.

Just my experience, ymmv, etc., etc.

Tim

Parting is always more $ than just selling as is.

But, you have to deal with every buyer being in a different location.  Listing fees (if you use an online auction house).  Paypal fees, or checks potentially not clearing the bank.  Shipping company employees who'd rather be doing anything else than safely handling another cardboard box marked 'FRAGILE'...  Lastly, you end up with the dregs.  The leftovers that no-one wants or needs.  You've got to be OK with throwing those in the recycle bin.

Basically, if you have the time, and the energy to do it.  Parting it is always more $.

Putting back to stock or close to it and selling the premium parts separate. Not a lot of people would pay the extra coin for the Ohlins forks and especially the CMC rotors on a used bike, but separate is a different story. I'm sure a lot of people won't agree with me. Oh well.

Need fourth option on poll, put back to stock and sell whole bike and sell premium parts off.

Oh I wanted to add to mine. Put back to stock or close to it if you have the stock parts.

Stock really not an option.   Has a 1080 motor, 506 cams, map heads built by Bruce Myers that needed a high pressure fuel regulator just to get fuel to engine.

So what's my bike worth?

It's worth what someone will pay for it...

probably far less than what you have into it.

Yep.

I never, never, EVER run those numbers on my bikes.  I figure whatever I put into it is what it is, and what I get out of it is joy and memories, and any $$$ return is a bonus.

Besides, if I did ever run the numbers, I would probably be depressed, and who wants that?

5th option
Keep it and let DMF members rent it whenever they are in your area...  [evil]

I noticed you've got two different rotors on the front, what's the story there?
That's no help for your dilemma, I know, but I just had to ask.

So to that end, my advice is to put it up for sale, complete, at a price you can live with.
See if you get any traction.

As far as 'what it's worth', IIRC you've got a lot of cool parts on it that aren't shown in those pics.

If the 'sell it whole' doesn't get any traction, the decision is made for you.

[, quote] 2 different rotors were a 2 fold decision
1 wanted to run just one ceramic/one monobloc for weight savings.  ~7lbs on front end
2 those things were expensive about 2 grand so money was and issue too

Mine is so modified that I would not be comfortable selling it to someone for liability reasons. Im going to have to part it out. good luck.
