Title: Bright legal headlight bulb?
Post by: Jordan on July 18, 2008, 06:38:37 AM
My 900ss looks like it has Lemmiwinks cooped up holding a candle flame.  Is there a nice bright, legal replacement headlight bulb?

Looking for something that is going to get me noticed in traffic.

I am running a PIAA bulb in the 65w/55w combo (notice that this is reversed from normal bulbs) cuz I'm not normal!  [laugh] VERY bright/white light at the same power draw.... Sylvania Silverstar's are also badass at a bit less $.

Funny I just finished putting a Silverstar Ultra in my S2R like 5 minutes ago after recommendations from this board and old posts from TOB.  Just waiting for it to get dark enough for me to try it out.  The Ultras are supposed to be even brighter than straight Silverstars, but they come in two packs.  Anyone want to buy one?? :)  Oh well.  Guess I have a spare if I can ever find it in the garage again.  So much crap is collecting on there!

I'll let you know my opinion in a few minutes.  Heading out right now  [thumbsup]

Okay. Totally WAS NOT blown away by the Silverstar Ultras.  Box says 20-25% brighter than regular and whiter.  Okay, whiter yes.  Brighter, okay a little.  Can't really notice a huge difference through my tinted visor.

Are all the suggestions D.O.T. approved legal?

The SS Ultras are.  They are definitely whiter, and a little brighter.  I just expected something like I get from my LightForce driving lights.  :o  Maybe I was expecting too much.  ;D

anything that is higher wattage than 55w/60w  Lo/Hi, will not be legal. that being said, how many cops have asked to see your headlight bulb?

there is an OzMonsters thread about bulbs - some of us have tried the Phillips X-Treme bulb with good success.

It was a noticeable improvement on my OLD stock bulb.

Have a great ride!

I mostly hear people talk about Silverstars and Candlepower bulbs. I myself have the Sylvania site bookmarked so I can grab put on some Silverstars when I do my 15K service.

i used a headlight similar to the one on the sv's in the past, ie: multi face reflector and clear lense with a higher wattage piaa white type bulb.  it was ok............but now with my acerbis cyclops set up even just the low beam projector is better, the high beam flood is even nicer.  ultimatly though, nothing compares to hid which is what i'm in the process of doing.  the 55w vs. the 35w is even better.  more or less it has been my experience that most h4 bulbs are the same...the brighter higher quality ones just burn out faster.

I've used VisionPlus for 5 years or so.  Like 'em a lot.  The "white" seems much brighter.  I just got a set of X-treme from www.powerbulbs.com and have yet to install them.

Piaa super plasma bulbs are the most HID looking non-HID bulbs...forget the others trust me.  Either get an HID conversion or the Piaa super plasma. Check out the bottom of this page:

I just put in the Phillips X-treme and it is noticeably brighter than stock, but my old hi beam had burnt out and fouled the inside of the bulb so it looked extra dim before.  $40 shipped from the UK for a pair.

Found some Sylvania Silverstars Ultras on ebay for 20 bucks.  They say 9003 HB2 or H4 compatible.  Are these the ones I want?

Here is the auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270264940710).

So I just picked up a single Sylvania Silverstar Ultra and put it in tonight.  I really like the white light and it is plenty bright for me. [thumbsup]

I did notice that when I was behind someone in a lower type car my light was right in the passenger cabin.  I pretty much have the light aimed where it should be but I put it where I feel comfortable with where it is aimed when I ride, not in the garage.   Should I leave it where it is at or lower it keep from pissing people off?

Put yourself in the car, then make your decision.

Your owners manual gives exact measurements to aim the headlight.  Any time you adjust the suspension, you should adjust the headlight.

I've followed the manual and I think I like the headlight to be a little higher so I can see more of the road.  Obviously this is what is pissing people off.  I guess a better question should have been should I have it where I feel comfortable of where it is supposed to be.

that's what High beams are for.  only use them when you don't have 3000+ lb. objects hurtling toward you at great velocity.   [moto]
