Hey all does anyone have any experience with any of the HK 91 clones out there.
Was looking at the Springfield SAR 8 or the FAL. Anyone have any first hand with any of these?
the good, the bad, the blown up receivers?
Or any suggestions for a assault type rifle in .308
Thanks!
Just get the real deal, Springfield M1A. [clap]
Ruger Mini 30 is chambered in .308/7.62, I believe.
FN is supposed to be releasing their FNAR (7.62x51) .308 (http://www.fnhusa.com/le/products/firearms/family.asp?fid=FNF049&gid=FNG022) sometime in the near future. Supposed to have released in early June but no show just yet.

nosir. The mini-30 is chambered for the old soviet 7.63x39 round. Still a great round though, but no where near the terminal ballistics of the .308 at anything close to extended range.
The Fn FAL is not an HK 91 clone. It is an entirely different rifle. The SAR 8's are very nice but pricey. The best bet at an inexpensive HK-91/G-3 clone is a CETME. They are imported by Century International Arms and can usually be had for 500 to 700 bucks. Being from Century International Arms means that quality control is spotty at best. Canted front sight's are the most common problem. They also (all sar-8/g-3/CETME's) destroy the brass they fire so not much luck reloading. The Century kit's are american barrells and some other parts built around old parts kits.
I like the look of the FN AR. Since they require that all the rifles produced be able t shoot under 1 MOA I would think the quality should be pretty good.
I would rather spend the money on something like the Springfield SAR 8 or the FN AR and have a quality firearm that will take a beating,
than something that may or may not jam, plus like you mentioned the SAR and others destroy brass and man don't be on the right
side of the gun when someones shooting them, the HK91 and clones throw the brass way out hard.
Love an M1A but the cost is a factor for sure.
have you looked at the JLD PTR 91 yet? They're supposedly made utilizing H&K G3 tooling and cost just a bit over $1000
I've been keeping an eye on the FN SCAR Heavy, but it probably won't be released until after Jan 09 and according to speculation on fnforum.net, they may sell for between $2,500 & $3,500. That's a bit steep for me
Yea. Don't forget that we will most likely have a new(ish) version of the assault weapon ban some time in the not so distant future, so might want to make your purchases sooner rather than later.
There is always the AR-15 variants.
DPMS makes one in 308, I'm sure Stag Arms, RRA, and others do as well. Hell, you could build one yourself.

Good information, but I need to clarify one thing.....the Springfield Armory SAR-8 has two versions. The first version is the more sought after one and demands the higher prices (it has the correct stamped steel receiver). The newer version is built on an aluminum received with a built in Weaver rail. These are prone to stretching of the receiver after many, many rounds. These receivers also will not accept HK accessories, such as the scope mount, bipod forearm gruard, and paratrooper/telescoping stock. These can be seen around $600-$800, but mostly hover in the $800-$1200 range.
Here is the newer version with a modified bipod forearm guard (third down in the picture)...

I've read a lot of good things about the PTR rifles.

You are correct, I apologize if I led anyone astray. 7.62X39. The .308 is comparable to NATO 7.62X51.

Hey thanks for the info on the JLD, seems you can find those for well under $1000 on alot of the auction sites and they have a steel receiver too.
