Title: Oil Cooler: Monster S4R 996 Engine -- Can It Run Without One?
Post by: TitanMonsterS4R on July 18, 2016, 04:32:09 PM
Wondering what the potential cons are to running my Monster S4R without its oil cooler.

Lower cooler got a whole in it and needs to be replaced. This got me wondering what would happen if I ran the bike without an oil cooler at all and blocked the holes on both sides of the engine where the current oil lines run.

My 02 S4 ran without an oil cooler, engines are similar 916 vs 996. Both run the same type of radiator......

Just curious

So question, sometimes radiators and oil coolers are really put together into the same housing. Are you sure that the S4 you speak of didn't have this methodology and now they have dissociated it.

In certain cars (like my honda), the transmission fluid will run in a loop and go into the radiator. There is a physical barrier formed into the radiator to keep coolant and transmission fluid apart.

I don't know the answer but its something to think about that might help you to answer your question. Maybe look at an exploded parts diagram from the ducati site on the S4 to see if it has oil lines running to it.

I would NOT recommend running too long without the oil cooler . ..  the added displacement generates extra heat . .you could use any oil cooler that  you can somehow install until either you get an OEM like this one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-2007-DUCATI-Monster-S4R-oil-cooler-radiator-54840441A-fittings-grommets-/161749998677 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-2007-DUCATI-Monster-S4R-oil-cooler-radiator-54840441A-fittings-grommets-/161749998677)

The weather is really cool in Australia right now so I think I might be able to get away with it for a little bit. But understand that the added CCs increases the heat for the bike.....

Wonder why the S4 never got a oil cooler now...

S4 never had an oil cooler of any form.

If you want to run without the cooler, you'll need to provide oil to the heads somehow.

Well that answers my question about running one without an oil cooler. Wonder if I could get a better one.

Yes.  And No.  Respectively.
