Title: Ducati Service look up Post by: WolfDuc796 on September 14, 2016, 06:28:07 PM Hello all! I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, and if it's been asked/posted before I apologize as well as I looked for a few hours and found nothing. I'm not sure if I just suck at using the search engine or what. Also, this is long I apologize So here's the deal. I bought a 2012 M796 ABS with 8,000 miles on the clock, from a BMW/Indian dealer in Shenadoah, Texas. The salesman told me the 7500 mile service had been done on it an he was adamant it had been done, he even said they had paperwork on it. I was going to get the bike regardless, but that was a $1200 job that I wouldn't have to get done so it was a nice bonus. Once the deal was done, they gave me all the books, the extra keys, the code card, and the backing for the instrument panel for taking the bikini fairing off. But they claimed "we can't find the paperwork for the service " so in my head I think he immediately lied. Being the idiot that I am I didn't even notice the Service wrench being on. So I don't believe it was done. Is their anyway I can find out if it was done or not? All the other bikes (and cars for that matter) I've owned before those had a nationwide linked system and if they put the Vin in it will pop up. Is this the case with Ducati? Or do I have to call the Ducati dealer that it would have been taken to for the service? I ask because I called the Ducati dealer by me (Dallas Texas, way north of where I got the bike) and he put the vin in and said he couldn't tell me anything about the bike. Which I find extremely strange. Anyway does anyone have any info on how I can find out if it was truly done? I thought about pulling the belt covers and checking that. I mean the bike is in PERFECT shape. And keep in mind I'm not complaining about spending the $1K+ for the service, I just don't want to waste the money if it was already done. Again I'm sorry this was so long! I wanted to be detailed so there was no confusion. Thanks everyone for your help! Cheers!
Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: d3vi@nt on September 14, 2016, 07:37:41 PM I don't know if you have much recourse if you already purchased the bike from a non-Ducati dealer.
Most of the 7.5k maintenance items are just 'checks'. Engine oil could be an indicator if it looks nasty, or maybe low clutch/brake fluid, sloppy chain and/or dirty air filter. I don't know how you could tell for sure without going through it all again, though. Even still, I find things not torqued properly fresh from the shop. FWIW, when my 'Maint' notification came on I took my M695 to the dealer for service. When it was done, the 'Maint' warning still flashed on the guage. I went back to the dealer and they told me that this was normal for North American Duc's. Being as clueless as they were, I believed them. Came back to these forums and learned how to clear it myself. Check what you can on your own and if you're really worried about something, have a good shop verify. Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: WolfDuc796 on September 14, 2016, 08:28:28 PM Thank you for the reply! I know I don't have much recourse with them. I mainly just want to find out if it was done or not so that I can't know to get it done. Like I said I didn't mind having to pay the money but I'd rather not do it, if it was already done.
Yea most of the stuff according to the service check in the manual is checking things. There's a few that stuck out to me as replacing the timing belts, and adjusting the valves. The service guy At the dealer I spoke with in Dallas made it out like if I didn't get it done my engine was gonna blow lol. Oh and from what I'm reading the M796 has to be hooked up to a Ducati computer to have the maintenance indicator turned off. That's why I highly doubt the service was done, and if it was done why didn't they turn the light off? I got the bike for a steal us it's in perfect shape so I can't complain too much. I just want to be safe not sorry you know? Again thanks for the reply! Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: Speeddog on September 14, 2016, 09:30:11 PM One thing to keep in mind, the 'service' indicator cannot be turned off prior to when it turns on.
So if they got it serviced a mile before the 'limit', it'd be on after that. Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: WolfDuc796 on September 14, 2016, 09:57:04 PM Yea I thought about that as well. That's why I'm just trying to figure out what to do. I suppose I will call all the Ducati dealers In the Houston area lol. That is of course assuming he got it done at a Ducati dealer although I don't know why he wouldn't have. Does anyone know if Ducati has a shared service database? I know most car manufacturers have a shared database and same for most bike brands. For example my dad has a Harley, if he gets it serviced in Dallas, then goes on a road trip and needs the oil changed and stops at another Harley dealer to get it done, they can look and see everything that's been done to it and where it was done.
Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: Howie on September 15, 2016, 03:38:49 AM I don't know if you can find out if your bike was serviced from a Ducati dealer (assuming the service was done by a dealer). DarkMonster620 on this board probably knows. Or you could take a ride to a dealer. 2012? Very important to know when the last time the timing belts were changed. Me? I would do the service anyway just to establish a base for future service.
Title: Re: Post by: greenohawk69 on September 15, 2016, 05:13:57 AM Ask the place where you bought it from if they know where it had been serviced...as they did say it was done (although no paperwork to prove it).
Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: DarkMonster620 on September 15, 2016, 07:08:20 AM Only warranties are stored in the Ducati DCS system . . .
Dealers should keep a detailed record of service/jobs done on bikes since ALL bikes must be registered when being received . . . For modern bikes and since DDS2.0 was introduced, techs can input bike's VIN or license plate # into DDS2.0 and register ALL work performed. Even some aftermarket diag systems, like the one I personally use, you can do the same and store the information Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: Heath on September 15, 2016, 02:33:19 PM I would push back on them to do the research and find that information. Just taking their word that, "oh yeah it was done" isn't good enough. This was a key selling point of the bike. There is no way you should now need to go and pay for that service. I would lead with having them find out where the service got done or better yet can you get me the paperwork. Not so much the, you need to do the service angle.
At least I hope it is writing that the service was already completed should anything happen to the bike in the next 7500 miles. Title: Re: Ducati Service look up Post by: WolfDuc796 on September 15, 2016, 02:35:23 PM Thank you all for the replies! So I called the 2 Ducati dealers in the Houston area. One had no record of the bike at all. The other had done a rear brake fluid flush in January and an oil change in June of 2015 but that was it. There is a third place in Houston who are Ducati approved service place, but they don't store info via the VIN, he said the only way they could look it up was by first and last name. So the guy at the Ducati dealer where the bike had a record at told me the bike he 7600 miles on it when they did the brake fluid flush so if the guy did have the service done before the 7500 miles at the Ducati approved place, and then the indicator tripped, I find it hard to believe it wouldn't have been turned off when it was at the Dealer for that. So my plan now is to pull the belt cover and check out how the belts look and go from there. Like I said I don't mind doing the service, just don't want to waste the money if it was already done.
