Hey guys, I am new to the Ducati scene and I have some questions and need some help if you would all be so kind. I bought a 2005 Monster S4R for $3500 and she has been giving me problems from the start. Everything was fine in the beginning, she seemed to run well. I started to sand the tank down to repaint and get her looking beautiful again. Upon sanding, I found bondo witch led to finding holes in the tank. I found another tank and got a dent pulled and a sweet new coat of paint and now she looks great.....but here lies the problem. After getting her hooked back up and gas in the tank. She doesn't seem to want to stay on. I triple checked and all the lines are correct and the guts in the tank are correct as well. She spits and stalls out. Occasionally she will idle smoothly for a while but when I ride her she dies out after getting on the throttle a bit and I have had to push her home. I thought it was the power commander 3 usb that was the problem, but that doesn't seem to be it. I drained the tank last night thinking there could be bad gas or moisture in the tank, added HEET and new gas, she started, struggled to idle again, backfired rather loudly and now she won't turn over again. I could use some advice, some help, some anything at this point......I have thrown in the towel for the moment and as soon as I call around for pricing, I'll take her to the shop. Any advice/help on what this problem could be before I take her in?
Thanks guys,
Ian
Did you put in a new fuel filter?
Yes, I have a new pump and filter. I made sure the filter was hooked up correctly as well.
Hoses tight and not sucking air?
Is it not turning over?
Charge the battery fully.
Turn it on and listen for the fuel pump to prime.
Hit the button.
If it turns over slowly check battery to see if can handle load.
If battery is good ,clean the battery cable connections. At the frame ,solenoid, starter and frame.
Hit button again.
It should turn over much better now.
I would also remove the crank sensor and clean it and it's connections.
@ Howie: Hoses are tight and not sucking air. I put new hose clamps on everything upon install.
@Lars D: It turns over, it even starts up a bit, idles occasionally with the choke on then she dies down and stalls out.
Will it run if you hold the throttle open a bit? In other words, is the idle speed stepper motor working? Unfortunately, not much to work with here on the internet. Best bet might be to get a scan tool on it.
1. can you tell if it is running on both cylinders
2. did you ever see/hear it run before you played with it
3. does it backfire out the exhaust or intake?
4.will it run at low throttle settings (under 1/4?)
5.can you hear the fuel pump?
It sounds like you have no fuel pump so first I would attach a meter and measure the fuel pressure. Any chance the fuel pump is wired in reverse?
If you have fuel pressure then it is either NOT fuel related or it is control side of the fuel system (ecu, wiring or sensors to signal fuel) . A power commander is not perfect but tells us that it probably is a stock ecu. It should run (poorly but run) with mods to the bike like open airbox or exhaust so I do not think it is a problem there unless the device is bad.
Fuel pump get's my vote..... [popcorn]
