Post by: ducatigirl100 on September 23, 2016, 06:03:07 PM
So winter is around the corner ...so I decided after 5 years to take the leap and decided that I have accumulated all the skillset and confidence  that I need to rebuild my bike..( I've taken alot of infos from tou guy's over the years) ..   I work in a Bank and have a degre in law......   no formal education in bike mecanics..... and before owning my bike  never actually change a spark plug on my car.

...  so lets begin ...some pics please

Good idea that.  And a great re-fresh.

I made one out of a carbon fibre sheet to mount my electrics on:

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2998_zps4by7rshb.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_2998_zps4by7rshb.jpg.html)

And luckily it worked when fitting the Ducati ST2 electrics:

(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a615/Yorkie13/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_3111_zpsm9qwxuyu.jpg) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Yorkie13/media/Ducati%20Monster/IMG_3111_zpsm9qwxuyu.jpg.html)

All I did was weld some more supporting tabs on to the inside of the frame, you can just see them here:

@Yookie ...  [popcorn]  nice work  [thumbsup] I was watching that tread  [popcorn]

I like the idea of welding tabs into the inside of the frame . My husband as a welding kit at home .... I ask him if he wants to do it ....I'll trade a week of landry/dishe's ...for the service  [bang]  [laugh]

The contrast of the suspension arm remaining the original color and the frame and the swingharm loop red is a nice detail.

Title: Re: winter project m900 complete rebuilt
Post by: ducatigirl100 on October 02, 2016, 05:16:54 PM
I decided that I would  not use most of the wiring that was in the OEM loom...  big portions of it is burn from the inside .... the wires overheat due to improper gauges...   to small ...   AWG 20 or something like that .

So I've put some  18 AWG for most of the loom and some 16 AWG for ignition, headligth and hi beam.......

It's starting to look like a real loom .... still more work to do ... [popcorn] ;D

I didn't have a lot of time to work on the bike the last 2 weeks but here it is ....

I'm starting to think about powdercoating  the weels and the frame.
I was wandering what preperation do I have to do before taking it to the pewercoater man.....

Weels ? Do I take out the berings and everiting? Do I sand the weels or make any special preperarion ?

The frame : do I sandblast it or sand it ? Or leave it as it is?

Remove the bearings and cush drive rubbers. All the parts need to be bare metal for coating. Let the powder coater do it.

Post by: ducatigirl100 on October 14, 2016, 01:12:36 PM
My second question is what color I soult paint the bike ???

Option 1 :  Paul smart theme
Seagreen frame and black wheels.   I would peal off the paint from the gas tank and give it a brush aluminium finish whit a coat of clear Whit a ducati classic decals on the sides ....

Or

Option 2 : black wheels and frame and keep the tank red whit the checkerd flag on it ....altougth the tank is all scrath up from a fall last year.... maybe not as original as the other option .....

You'll probably damage all the parts that come out of the wheels. Plan on ordering new ones, or an option is to have the frame powder coated, and the wheels painted.

Progressing...progressing.....

I've almots finish the OEM slim down loom
It as 8 parallel cicuits.

Only 2 circuits to do
Brake tail ligh /sensors
And the start/kill switch cicuit

Once all  the wires will be sleeved it will look a lot cleaner than the original

From the pic, have you modified the carbs ?

Not for the last 2 years but here a photo of what I did .... I dont remembre what the size of the jets are ... but on the left his my version and on the rigth it's shows the stock setup....

There's acualy 2 main jet  a big one and a smaller one ......   the torque is great whit that modification.  The flow of the gas is more direct

Thanks. That gives me a bit to think about.

Title: Re: winter project m900 complete rebuilt
Post by: ducatigirl100 on October 15, 2016, 04:36:37 PM
From what I remember the  usual place for the main jet is block whit the bolt that use to be on top. I was using a small size jet 134   ...I think where the "starter jet " was . Then I've put a size 142 main jet unsted of the bolt on top ....

A ducati mecanic told me some day that "special setup" of mine is exacly what the engeners at Honda when they where call to solve some carburator  issues whit the Cagiva that won the dakar rally in the 90'.  [coffee]
;D.... altougth I dont take credit for it ...   curriously my Husband who is a ex AMA    ( Xcross) racer came whit the setup....

When he saw the OEM setup for first time a few years ago he was stund...... " that thing make no sense and looks like sh**t engeniring "
He complain that the 45 degre angle from the main jet is limithing gas flow so he put a second main jet on top.....

The result is a better effeciency from 1/4 to 3/4 .... is nigth and day.

racing mecanical intuition ....  [thumbsup]... yepp

Thanks heaps. I will play with some carbs to explore this in addition to  mods to the slide and bellmouth.
I read that Honda helped Cagiva to beat Yamaha with those special carbs. Yes, I agree the main jet straight in line with the needle jet/emulsion tube is better. :)
Cheers.

I will have to understand the interaction between the new main jet and the oem choke set up. It appears to be adding an intermediate jet or a power jet depending on your perspective. A smaller intermediate jet can give cleaner mid range and upper mid range running allowing the new main jet to handle WOT and the very top end. Very cool. This is very interesting. I really appreciate you sharing this, so thank you Mr and Mrs 100. [thumbsup]

I'm gonna give this a go. Have ordered jets. Now just gotta find an M900/750 without FCRs. [laugh]

The starter jet is actually a type of Mikuni main jet, why cant we use that type of jet in a larger size as the bigger main jet? I ordered the type in the pic as it has the correct thread, etc, but I was just curious. Is it because its OD is about the same as the dome bolt?

Title: Re: winter project m900 complete rebuilt
Post by: ducatigirl100 on October 17, 2016, 04:45:54 PM
There's alot of aspects of this mood that I dont remember.   A Thing that I remember is that I used what I  add around... I know that at least one jet came from  a Yamaha R-6...... (size 134 ...I think)  wich was the same kind of jets..

I would have to open it up and see what exacly in it . This mood was done actually 3 years ago.

The needles and the needle jets where change also.... I  know that I have  4 or 5 kits of needles but I dont remember what in it.  But just from logic it would be around a  medium tapper needle

I'm at the step of getting the bering out of the rims .....  usually  I push the internal tube that is place betwin the bering and move it from side to side a place a big srewdriver  to slam it whit a hammer to take out the bering but they  dont want to move.....   it seams this "usual" technique dosent work.... (maybe it jusst me ...but..)

Did somebody use that technique ? Do I have to try harder ? .... or do I take them out by completely destroing them ?

I add that idea but after a little bit of reserch it seam it would alter  the integrety of the wheel so I didin't tried this idea .

Sometimes there's a small slot cut in the end of the spacer that will allow you to get a tiny bit of the inner race with a punch.

Give both ends a real close look.

You can safely heat aluminum to 350-400F, actually much higher, without affecting the structure.

You'll have a hard time achieving too high a temp with a heat gun due to the fact that the rest of the wheel will dissipate the heat.

I 've put the project on old for a few month's now...  whit the new house and home renovation it took a tool on my budget.  I work on it from time to time .  But for the moment I want to be dept free  ;D
I've manage to pay around 8000$ of dept (credit card+  the car) since jully...  [bow_down]

I'm not taking any stupid credit card for the rest of my life !

The bike is still in peace's although I've started to reasemble the motor(finish)  whit the swingarm. All the electrical is done I just to have to put it on the bike.

Tanks

I was asking for the M-unit Motogadget as I begin installing mine on my motorcycle.

I saw on one of your previous post that you had put back an original wiring harness, so I thought you had a problem with the M-unit.

Originaly I add to put back the original loom because the way that I've built it .... the loom was to big to my liking...  I've redone the entire loom about 3 or 4 time trying each time make it gradually smaller.

The m-unit work realy well  the times that I've put it on the bike.   Also all the other motogadet that I have work flawlesly for the last 3 years . I didin't have any single issues whit them ( m-lock and the tiny speedo gauge)  [bow_down]

I dont exacly know the name of the color..... but the guy told me he did some ducati wheels a couple weeks ago and he showed me an example.  I never realize that the gold is more "brown" then "yellow".

I guess I'll have to wait a week or two to see the results

Must be great to be getting close to completion.

The original colours will look great.

Tanks  [thumbsup]   I bougth the bike about 6 years ago  saying to myself that I would overhaul it (check my first post on DMF )... it took 6 years to learn mecanics on my hown....  although the last 3 years my husband gave me alot of  knowledge and confidence.   [thumbsup]

Contact or take in the bearing to a bearing business and see if they can match. Or maybe a sportbike shop (e.g. Honda, BMW, etc.).

The promblem is solved.. I-ve orderd the part ......from england :-\...  I use the SKF parf number on the bering itself... I tried to call the "bering store" near me and he said that these bering where "copyrighted " he could sold them only the ducati dealer can...   .... 50$  (not counting the custum fees) for a bering that is worth about 5$ ...... tanks ducati !  [bang]

I put a Motogadget mini in the same location in '10. I liked it, but it was a bit far to pull my eyes off the road and get them back to it.

Got a LOT of compliments on it though and your mount looks better than mine did!

I got rid of the -
-airbox
-original battery
-origibal electrical loom
 -original gauges.
-key cluster
I think I'll saved at least 25 lbs of the upper weigth of the bike... [bow_down]

Now I'm only missing two things to finish the bike... a lithium/ion battery and those K&N air filters

Looks sharp!

I'm on the fence about the fairing.  If you've gone to that much effort to install the MotoGadget mini where the key was, it will leave a LOT of open room behind the fairing which should normally house gauges.  Could be good if you put a small compartment up there for a camera, or personal items.

Thats my opinon too. The fairing is pratical but after putting so mutch effort in cleaning up the front of the bike  I dont like covering all the work .
