Title: Need help. Problem installing new battery on a 796 - SOLVED
Post by: jlopezmenardi on October 15, 2016, 09:09:14 AM
Hi, I recently bought a 2012 Monster 796 and decided to replace the weakening old battery.
I got a new Shorai lfx 18a1 bs12 to replace the existing YUASA.
I removed the old one and put the new Shorai in place.
I connected the positive cables first and then when I tried to connect the negative cables I heard a motor start running (I don't know if it is the ABS motor).
The thing is that I cannot complete the installation.
Any advice?
Jorge

If it is the starter you might have a starter solenoid suck in the on position.

Any idea how to turn off the starter solenoid?

try and set the kill switch to OFF and try again . . . then, as we say here, report back . .

stuck solenoid, back in the day, a few taps with an object, nowadays, try the above method

I tried with the kill switch on and off but the problems continues.

I tried to post a pic of the cable that is causing it. I don't know if i did it right.
At both terminals there's 3 cables connected. The main cable, the battery tender cable, and the third one that I guess is the one that powers the ABS.  This third cable is the one that starts the motor I hear.

I re-check again and the cable is going directly to the ABS Unit and the sound I hear is coming from inside that unit.
If I wrap it with tape, leave it away and only connect the other 2 cables, do you think it will work?
At least to ride the bike to the mechanic.

Hi everybody. Thanks for the help.
I've finally solved the problem.
After a lot of searching I located the main fuse which was blown out possibly because of the order I reconnected the terminals.
Just for anyone who need to know, in a 796 with ABS, the main fuse is located beside the ABS fuses just attached to the ABS unit in a row of 3 fuses. The last one 30Amp is the main one.
The new Shorai 18amp battery starts the bike instantly.
Thanks again
