I have a 2013 Monster 796 with a battery issue. (If it doesn't light off within a couple of cranks the battery goes dead. The installed battery minder cable shows no voltage assuming blow fuse. (getting the battery out is a real pain) I learned that one can charge the battery with the DDA port under the seat with a $100 plus charger from Ducati which puts out 1 amp. I was able to buy the a SAE cable that plugs into the DDA port. Since I own 2 battery minders and a regular battery charger how strong a charger can I connect to the DDA port without causing any problems. My charger can be set at 2 amps or 6 amps. Dealers I have contacted don't seem to know much about the subject. Any info would be helpful.
My suggestion is to address the two main issues, rather than put a band-aid on the problem that will eventually leave you stranded.
It appears your battery is sacked, and needs to be replaced.
While you're doing that, you can replace the fuse in the battery minder cable.
In tht bike you need to connect charger/mantainer TO battery or else you might fry the ECU.... the other connector is for ABS
Two of the four pins in the "DDA Connector" goes directly to the battery and can be used to charge it - as the Ducati charger does. If your cable/connector finds those two pins.... you're fine with the charger you've got. Are you sure?
I was talking regarding the NON Ducati charger .. . The OEM Ducati has only the 2 pins

Isn't the OEM charging connection the very same as the DDA? I thought they did that so owners didn't have to install a battery mounted pigtail...
Oddly enough, my '13 796 just started doing the same thing... hard starting and weak battery. Bought a battery tender last night and plugged it in... it charged for about 1 minute and signaled full charge.
I ain't messing around... new battery coming next week!

Yes, with the OEM you can connect and charge thru the Diagnostic port . . . with a "normal" charger, he would have to connect direct to battery

I had a problem on my evo that I thought was a weak battery since it sometimes fail to crank even if charged.
So i got a new battery and still sometimes it doesn't crank.
One fine day coming from a great ride. My engine stopped. Tried to restart thinking first, overheat but Gauge says fine, then bad fuel. Drained that and got new fuel. Then thought battery, was given defective batt.
Finally checked the plug and one plug was crushed :(
It was opened up and the belt jumped since the bearing seized.
All along the bearing was slowly deteriorating thus the hard starting, no crank.
What I learned is check your battery meter if you have one on your display, if not get a tester and trust what it says. If the battery is good then check other stuff like switches etc. Then the timing belt bearing.
It was a 2012 evo with 12k km on the clock. Ducati Italy did not warranty a cent even though it was maintained well at my local dealership .
Almost left ducati for KTM but the distributor offered a trade in and I accepted. I now have a monster 1200s.
I wish ducati helped even a little on the warranty. Like a goodwill warranty but they refused. Tsk tsk

Make sure you know where those two pins go and what they are. I have no idea what you are looking at, but the DDA is a 4 pin connector.
4 Pin = Diagnostic connector
2 Pin = ABS Diagnostic connector
Both are almost side by side; one is called a Deutz connector (square) and the other one a "Marelli" connector (oval w/2 pins) . . .

I think he's saying that the SAE cable he purchased has two pins and plugs into the 4 pin DDA port.
I'm likely wrong.
If you get the wrong pins big troubles can happen. I could figure out one, but not the other. True, I didn't spend much time, but I wouldn't risk it anyway. As Speeddog said
