Title: Silver bearings and Ducatis
Post by: koko64 on December 07, 2016, 05:37:31 PM
Do Ducatis run silver bearings? By that I mean bearings with silver electroplated to them like some aircraft engines?

I've seen that on the cages for needle roller bearings in 2 stroke conrod big ends.

Not seen anything that looks like that in Duc motors.

Thanks mate. I just wanted to be absolutely sure.
There are some great local oils and additives that are "not suitable for silver bearings", which have been used in Australia for many years including some Penrite Oils and Morey's oil stabilizer (one of the proven few used in fleet vehicles that isn't of the snake oil variety).

I have some of the old Yammi 'silver bearings' that I was going to build a Kwak triple crank with...

All bearings with cages in my HYM 1100 motor uses plastic "low friction" (acc to SKF) bearings.

Wright P&W and Allison used "silver" lined bearings in WW2. May have been used by others.. These are plain bearing inserts not roller or ball bearings found in some radial engines and two stroke engines..At the time silver was the best material for overloaded plain bearings. I have no idea id silver was used to plate rolling element bearings. Silver is ductile . Normally , modern automotive bearings are either the tri metal 77 type or bi metal aluminum, but silver is available of extreme conditions ....I'm no Ducati expert but it appears a 900 engine for example used plain connecting rod bearings and roller mains?
