I'm looking into some taller bars for a 696. The current ones are bent after a minor accident so I figure I may as well replace the bar entirely rather than just getting some risers.

Any recommendations? I'm not looking for a lot of height, particularly, but being able to back the steering stops off a little bit would be nice. Also, anyone know what the height limit is before I have to replace lines/cables? Not really interested in fussing with that.

I put some Renthal road low bars on my 695, and was able to adjust the steering stops back a bit.  No problem with the cables.  They make dozens of different bars - mostly for dirt bikes , and their website has configurators that visually compares them:   http://road.renthal.com/shop/road-products/road-handlebars/road-se-bars

 Do a search and you'll find a lot of 696 owners use the rizoma bar, slightly different bend to them but,there is no control locating holes drilled the bars like the originals. You can also use the 796/1100 fat bar from the factory, I've seen them on eBay, not sure if you also need a matching clamp. The chromed bar was what I hated most when I had a 696. I powder coated mine black.

This is a pricy option from the factory, but it is for your bike and all the needed parts are included. Not sure how much rise you needed.

I would recommend Rizoma handlebar. I have this handlebar on my 795, and it's really comfortable. 

Another vote for Rizoma. I find them very comfortable for highway riding.
