Looking at buying a non-running 750 Monster.
12K miles
New belts, fuel filter & fuel pump.
Cranks but won't start.
After reading the search topics I can't seem to find a definitive answer on the immobilizer issues.
I'm assuming the cranks but won't start is caused by one or more of the following issues:
1) No gas due to clogged fuel filter -- just replaced
2) No gas due to bad fuel pump -- just replaced
3) No spark -- I can simply check overall spark buy pulling a plug and cranking it over.
-- Timing is off -- belts were just done
-- Coils are shot -- coils are relatively inexpensive but I'm not sure how to confirm the ones I have are functioning properly
-- Immobilizer gremlins -- This is a big ????. I see where prices range from around $1000-$2000 for a new dash, Immobilizer & ECU. Found some used set ups on eBay for $500. I couldn't find a definitive answer on completely replacing with a non-immobilizer set up or aftermarket set-up.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Hopefully going to look at the bike today and see if I can get any codes off of the dash.
Thanks.
The cheapest fix for immobiliser problems is to remove it through an ECU flash @ about $250. I think a few of our sponsors offer that service.
And what exactly does the re-flash do (I understand what a re-flash is in concept)?
Is it a permanent fix?
Does the re-flash create any addl gremlins?
Can it be reversed?
I'm totally good with a $250 charge to fix that issue.
BTW: It has both Red & Black keys.
TIA
Brian
I thought the immobilizer would stop it cranking. Maybe I missed something.
Worth checking spark ( making sure to ground the plug against the head but not over the open plug hole). Are you hearing the fuel pump prime on start up?
Looks like I missed the deal by 4 hrs.
Back to the hunt!
Thanks for the assistance.
Great bit of knowledge on here!!!
Deal is back on.
Going to look at it tomorrow.
Supposedly ran last Summer.
It's in the garage!
1st order of business is to get it to fire, then the real fun begins.

Can you hear the pump prime when you turn on the key? It should run for about 15 seconds.
Yep, pump primes & it turns over but won't fire.
Gauges light up & the needles sweep and settle.
It supposedly ran last Fall but wont start now.
I'll try an pull a plug tonight to check spark.
The PO I bought it from also installed a fuel filter & pump but I'm going to pull it to check his work as well as install new fuel lines.
The temp just dropped (to a lovely 29deg) here and looks like it won't be pleasant enough in my garage to work until next weekend.
I'll probably just start taking off the BS stuff one of the POs installed/rigged.
Here's my initial To-Do List:
Get it to run
Replace fuel line
Check fuel pump
Check fuel filter
Replace belts
Check valves
Flash ECU / Immobilizer
Replace fork seals â€" re-valve?
Replace side covers
Replace switch gear
Replace headlight â€" dual
Replace taillight â€" LED w/turnsignals?
Remove clip-ons & replace w/stockish handlebar
Replace grips
Replace footpegs
Replace brake pads
Replace all fluids
Replace battery?
R&R gas tank
R&R front fender
R&R belt covers
Check all wiring & connections
Seat lock malfunction
Replace tires
Exhaust ??
Gauges ?? -- Motogadget
Fuel lines inside the tank need to be 30R10 immersion rated.
Good chance the fuel lines on the outside of the tank are reversed.
NAPA # H209 1 foot length. It isn't cheap.
Are you around C-Springs, by chance? Think I recognize that one from Craigslist...
ducpainter -- Thanks I was just going to swing by the dealer and grab some at $44/ft
d3v1@ant -- Yep, that's the bike.... I had a project urge. I live in Littleton.
Nice. Looks like a great project. Good luck with it. [thumbsup]
Any updates??
All good.
Lines in the tank were connected improperly.
Took it for a quick 2 mile shakedown ride last weekend.
Just a few minor detailing items and all will be well.
Good news!
Enjoy.
