Title: Monster 696 2009 + Exhaust or 2013 low miles?
Post by: Exodus5 on June 28, 2017, 01:09:05 PM
I have narrowed my choices for a new bike (previously always had a SV650) to two local (well, one not so local) Monster 696's.
Option 1 - Lovely red 2009 with Termignoni full exhaust/ecu but ~6k miles.
Option 2 - 2013 Black with half the mileage in even better shape for ~$600 more.
I know the Terminoni is over $1K and the 2013 has ABS.  The 2009 is ~150 miles away so there is that....
Can any of you tell me of any differences between the 2009/2013 otherwise?

I would ask about maintenance records for both of them... the '09 will need belts immediately (being that old, unless they have been changed.)

What makes the '13 'in better shape' than the '09?

^^ This

Maintenance and/or new rubber (if > 5 years old) can add up.

They look identical on paper (http://www.ducati.com/compare/index.do). No doubt some members here can chime in with better info than what Ducati provides.

I'd get the red with the Termis!

ABS would be awesome but you've gotta love a red Ducati.

Also 10,000 km's isn't much at all.

Either way, you'll grab a ripper bike! ðŸ'ðŸ»ðŸ'ðŸ»

THanks all.  I am pretty sure the older/higher mileage bike was taken car of properly but I will have to ask about the last belt change on both.  Do the belts stretch or start cracking when they get old?  Just wondering what to look for.

The belts should be changed every two years regardless of mileage or visual appearance.  Do people go longer?  Yes.  Two years is preventative maintenance.  If a belt breaks the resulting damage can be anything between a couple of bent valves to complete engine destruction.

OK.  So unless they tell me the belts were done recently I should just go ahead and be ready to do them immediately.  Got it.  Next question, I looked online for how to do them and they look like they could be a real PITA.  Is there a good writeup or instructional video explaining the process?

There are some YouTubes on it, you could probably search and find some threads on it.  I took my bike in for the first belt change, I bought a used '13 in '16, but I knew how the bike was used and stored and ran it to the 7500mi service earlier this year.  I did, however, change the tires first thing after I bought it... I don't fool around with tires; just my .02 worth.

Hmmm.
Termi system is worth big bucks, but abs could be handy.

I had a first year 09' 696 with termignoni exhausts. I had lots of first year problems with that bike. The 13' has abs which is a +. The termignoni exhausts on the bike are just for sound and weight improvement, don't expect performance gains. Any aftermarket slip-on will do and be cheaper.

The major service is for that year is 7500 miles and it is kinda pricy so you will find bikes with just under that mileage for sale. You can haggle down the price considering you will need to have the service performed fairly soon. Mainly rubber timing belt with valve shim check/adjustment($600-$900 for a two valve) . I'm not skilled to do this service, many are, but I have two bikes and it takes a while for me to reach 7500 miles so I just pay the dealership and perform all other maintenance items myself.

According to my opinion an old one is not worth the risk.

Just go with the young one.
ABS is also a big advantage.

Who knows what happens tomorrow...
May be you can catch a real good deal for a nice set of Termignoni.
