Title: Stuck at a gas station - Bike wont start
Post by: 2 Wheel Wanderer on August 13, 2017, 06:17:30 PM
Well I'm stuck as the title says. Bike had a little trouble starting earlier. I stopped for gas and it slowly turned over but wouldn't start. Now the remote switch just clicks. I had a small service truck from AAA here but he couldn't jump the battery. We tested it and showed 12.7v, when I turned the key on it showed 12.4v.

Is this enough to turn the engine over and start it? Battery is less then 2 months old.

Bike is a 2005 monster 620.

Any advice would help.

Thanks

Why can't he jump it?

Sorry, he tried but it didn't turn over, just got a click.

So I just went and got a battery from Walmart, no dice.

Not the battery.

What else could it be? I checked all fuses, they are good.

Relay?

Can I bypass the starter switch on the right side of the bike?

Verify good/clean connections at the ground, starter relay and starter?  From a distance sorta smells like a voltage drop in the high current starter circuit that can be caused by a corroded connection.  Hopefully just need to clean the connectors or replace a worn relay.

Thanks BK, I'll check all connections in the morning. Just got home bout 20 mins ago. 110 mile tow home. Damn AAA was worth it this year!

Yes. A screwdriver across the two heavy terminals will bypass it...for next time.

By starter switch do you mean the starter button or the solenoid?  In case you don't know how to check for voltage drop in a starter circuit

http://aa1car.com/library/voltage_drop_testing.htm  Yes it is for cars, but it works for bikes too.

So the problem ended up being my starter.

I rebuilt it and all is good.  [thumbsup]
