Hello, I have a 2001 Monster 900 Dark that I'm upgrading. Has 35,000 miles and has been very well maintained.
I have a new EVR basket and clutch plates and am in the process of re-assembling. My question is in regards to the clutch hub. Mine looks kind of gnarly and has a bit of light scoring. I'm liking the idea of replacing it even though it may not be 100% necessary since I'm replacing everything else as well. So Im wondering:
-Is it a waste to consider a hew clutch hub?
-Should I be looking at an aluminum hub since the new plates and basket are aluminum?
-I understand that some hub units are sealed and some require rubber bushings and a backing plate - If so, could someone please specify?
-Differences between 'name brands" and Ebay stuff for this particular part?
I don't mind spending money with longevity and performance in mind. But I also don't need the latest and greatest of everything (i.e. slipper clutch, etc.) This bike has always been used for normal street and highway cruising. Nothing super -aggressive.
Thanks for any and all advice,
Ben
Monsterparts (sponsor) has alloy hub/drums avaliable. OEM replacements are also worth considering but the alloy hub is much lighter. Dry clutch parts seem to get quite beat up and still work fine. Motowheels has slipper vlutches if you want to go all out.
On 900 motors, I have run alloy hubs, alloy baskets, alloy plate kits, Ti bolts, billet spring caps and premium springs to drop about 2kgs off the clutch in total. With a light flywheel that comes to 3 kgs off rotating engine components.
Thanks,
I guess I am not quite as interested in spending a lot to shave off an extra pound or 2. I'm leaning more towards buying the HDESA hub and re-using the backing plate and rubber bushings from the old hub. Seems like a pretty good deal at $79. Is this hub up to standard, and compatible with the 48t aluminum clutch I have as a replacement?
The only reason I've ever replaced a hub due to wear is on the outer face where it bears against the washer.
Yes, besides being kind of rusty and corroded, there is some light scoring on the outside of the hub.
