Title: Ducati Fairing Kit Install?
Post by: JGlass on December 19, 2017, 04:33:52 PM
So i came across other ducati forums and noticed 2 other people had good success with these ebay fairing kits. some needed extra bolts, some had good paint with very little to no blemishes and overall the outcome of their bikes came out AMAZING! BUT, since im new to bikes im not sure how hard it is to take my 696 apart. my Honda took all but 15min and she was naked and ready for work (that sounds horrible, im sorry.) but this is no Honda, and i don't want to screw things up!!

The reason why im looking into  these kits is the previous owner tried to super glue the vents back to the tank and glue ran down both sides of the tank and far away you cant see anything! but up close it makes me hurt inside  :'( so instead of trying to pay 1000s for the original paint job (pearl white) i figure why not throw it out and replace it with one of these kits?

so my question, where is a good forum or place to go to learn how to install these or take apart my 696 the right way? ive tried youtube and there isn't anything on there for the 696 just CBR and other jap bikes.

thanks for the help!

The panels come off easily, just takes time and patience. The owners manual and parts catalogue for your bike are free to download at ducati.com and give a visual guide. Usually your existing bolts are used. There must be some more hidden damage if there is superglue signs as the tank vent grills are held in with moulded in, one way tabs. push them off from the inside with a screwdriver.

Take all the tank bolts off, top, front and side. The panels have hooks molded on them that slide into receiving slots on both sides of that center strip of the tank. once the panel bolts are off, slide the panels forward and up to remove them. Careful not to damage the hooks, they are what mainly hold the panels to the tank, these are what are usually broken on used, ebay tank panels so be aware!

I have never bought the ebay, china kits but I assembled a complete set of used panels and found a set of brand new, original Ducati panels for a great price. The used panels are all colors as I planed to custom paint them or just wrap them. I new panels I found are flat black, I wanted gloss black but these are still great considering I paid $300 for new in the box!

They fit ok but there is a bit of wiggle that is needed to get the screws in the front of the tank cover installed. For the ones that come finished (not just primed) the biggest issue is level of clear usually applied. If you want a resilient finish. I would get someone to wetsand and apply a few layers of clear.

I put a set on an 1100S I briefly owned. Just be aware that the finish will not match any ducati factor color. If you are trying to mix and match, keep this in mind.
