Title: stripped female threads
Post by: booger on January 15, 2018, 08:36:44 AM
All,

2007 S4RT

Replaced the stocker clutch cover with a SpeedyMoto 'Quiet' cover. Went about it not realizing or not taking into account the new cover was much thicker than the stocker. Used the original M6x1.0 bolts. Stripped the one at 1 o'clock as it was probably a little short to begin with, and with the new cover didn't go down deep enough & grab enough thread to even snug. Aaaaand probably used a little too much twist anyway. I didn't intentionally gorilla it but used too much apparently. Doh. Now I hate myself. Feel like such a hamfist when usually I'm more careful.

Ordered some new 80mm bolts to replace the original 70mm(the longest ones) and will try to see if I can get it to snug in the 1 o'clock hole. There are three sizes; the shorties, the longs, and the intermediate length one. I used a stick to mark the depth of all of these threaded holes. There are only two depths, but three bolt sizes. Where does the intermediate length bolt go, in what position? The parts diagram is a little confusing. These clutch cover bolts are a surprising pain in the ass.

I guess once the deep freeze is over I will pull the clutch side engine cover off and TimeSert the hole, but what does pulling that side off entail? Do I have to replace the big round seal in the cover or can I just undo the bolts & the oil feed and pull it off just like that. And would I need to use a stainless insert or would a standard one suffice.

Thanks

I'd just use a slightly longer screw and call it good.

But if there are only long holes and short holes, but two long bolts, two short bolts, and one intermediate length bolt, in which hole does the intermediate length bolt go?

How many deep holes and how many shallow?

Three deep holes of equal depth and two shallow holes of equal depth. But three bolt lengths.

edit: so the intermediate goes in the 11 o'clock hole (M6x1.0x65mm) through careful analysis of the parts diagram. I do not understand this as the hole is the same depth as the holes the 70mm bolts go into. The two 20mm bolts go into the clutch side engine cover itself, not the actual engine case as the others do.

Not sure.

Will the two long screws go in all three deep holes, and thread in?

Which hole did you strip?

I stripped the 1 o'clock hole. The middle sized bolt goes into the 11 o'clock hole. Ay ay aye

A general rule of thumb is you need the threaded depth of the diameter of the of the threaded rod or bolt, not counting the last couple of threads in a blind hole.  Should be good enough in your case, no stresses.  My guess is one size is a "closenuf" replacement.

Is that one shallow, or deep?

So I guess the bolt is not critical in the critical sense. I'm putting a fair bit of effort into making this bike perfect so when something like this happens even though it's minor I get severely irked.

Are you messing with me?  [evil]

It's a deep hole DP

No...I'm not...honest. Sometimes I'm a little thick. I was just trying to figure out if you could use what you already had to solve the issue.

if the new cover is thicker, just get a screw that is 10 mm longer.

As long as it contacts the cover, and doesn't bottom in the hole, it's doing its' job...perfectly. [thumbsup]

I had to double check which board this thread was under....

Between the title, and a few of the following comments, I was wondering how long before the thread was locked!

Or is that just my mind in the gutter?

Yes.

There's 4 bolts that hold the cover on.

2 long bolts at 1:00 and 9:00, and 2 short bolts at 3:00 and 6:00.

Was that info from memory?
