Title: Cracked Lens for Gauges and broken stepper motor for speedo/tach Post by: He Man on May 24, 2018, 05:53:11 AM Has anyone ever attempted to remove the original plastic lens on their gauges? Ive got an S2R1000 and this is the year i finally get the damn thing working right (I gave up 2 years ago and stopped riding street).
Id like to swap it out for a flat glass lens, but it looks like the plastic is either press fit or held in with glue and needs to be cut out. I also need to do is replace the stepper motors because my speedometer died (and wont pass inspection). has anyone here done that? I found the motor on ebay and bought a few just in case someone else needed them. The lens is hard to remove. Any luck sourcing a used lens? Title: Re: Cracked Lens for Gauges and broken stepper motor for speedo/tach Post by: thorn14 on May 24, 2018, 01:19:37 PM Isn't it curved slightly to accomodate the needle inside?

The motor that moves the needle is a type of stepper motor since it can move to a discrete position and hold it. The glass is curved, but I didn't immediately flag it as needing to bypass the lens. I'll reassemble and check. If the lens is just press fit, then cutting it out might be the only choice. I could also make it out of plastic too so it's not scratched anymore. I almost did it once myself but the gauges got smashed to the ground before I had a chance.

There was a discussion about cracked lenses years ago. I think the consensus was that the lenses cracked because of temperature changes and vibrations which they were too tightly fitted to withstand :-\ Use silicone? I always thought it was curved to reduce glare. I bought 4 motors because i was going to replace both at the same time and wanted spares, but I ended up only replacing one and realize I dont need so many spares. Does anyone else need to repair their gauges? I could do it for you for a small fee, or you can do it yourself. Its pretty straight forward. I was thinking laser cut the plastic out or heat gun and press out. I know there are lots of gauges that need to be fixed out there Title: Re: Cracked Lens for Gauges and broken stepper motor for speedo/tach Post by: thorn14 on June 21, 2018, 09:59:30 AM I always thought it was curved to reduce glare. Probably more likely. Title: Re: Cracked Lens for Gauges and broken stepper motor for speedo/tach Post by: ajw85 on June 26, 2018, 07:50:40 AM Did you end up repairing the cracks in your gauges?

I tried a heat gun and the glue just wouldn't melt. i have to carefully cut it out and use the original lens as a shelf to support a new lens.
its riding season right now, and i rather have ZERO down time! In the winter ill fix it. |
