Title: Motor Oil Recomended for 2000 M900ie
Post by: Allaband on October 01, 2018, 12:38:40 PM
Hello everyone! Just got my first Ducati and I love it! Sorry for the newb question but I don't know if my manuals have the most up to date info. I need to change the oil on my 2000 M900ie. It has 18,000 miles and it's my daily rider in Los Angeles California. I've only had it two weeks. My daily commute is 22 miles round trip. I will probably take it up the canyon for rip snorting weekend rides once I get the bike sorted out to my satisfaction. What kind of oil is recommended for my 2 valve engine? What filter should I use? Can I get these at O'reiley auto parts?

Thanks for your help! I'll post more smarter questions in the future!

Dave

Hi guys. Thanks for your help. I've been reading those threads in my spare time for days and still can't find the info I need. I'm not a lubrication engineer. I find myself searching google for the information I need because I can't find a simple answer on that thread. Is there any place they post the name of an oil that is currently for sale and say, "This is the one you should use." ?

I'm in graduate school and I'm a full time teacher. The fact is I'm just running the old oil that was in the bike when I bought it because I can't figure out what oil I can buy at my local parts shop to put in my bike. If someone can tell me, thank you very much. If not, I'll have to just run whatever they recommend at the parts shop.

The best they have/you will pay for AND for a 4 stroke MOTORCYCLE. The words "racing" or "performance" can be a good sign. 10/40 or 10/50. Synthetic (or 20/50 semi synthetic if that's what's available)

There is no simple answer as to brand. Ask 100 people, and you'll likely get 100 different answers. There is no answer sheet to this test.

Your 2001 Monster wants a 10w-40 or a 15w-40 or 50 synthetic for the widest temperature range. You can also use 20-w-50 as long as you don't ride below 0. There have been countless words written about oil weight and energy/power conservation, and the effects of thicker oil on engine heating. Let's not go there. If you read the owners manual it says to use Shell Advance Ultra 4. Good luck finding it.

The reason you were sent to 'The oil thread' was to show that it really doesn't matter what brand you use as long as you use a quality oil. If your local NAPA has Amsoil motorcycle specific use that in whatever weight is available. If your local store has another brand of full synthetic buy that. I use Klotz in 20w-50. Buy a filter from the list in the filter thread, they'll all fit, or buy a filter from a Ducati shop. You'll need about 3.5 qts.

To add to what ducpainter said, do use a fully synthetic motorcycle specific oil since over the years car oils in the US lost the additives you want in the oil.  Since your bike has a dry clutch you don't need to worry about MA and MB.If you have trouble finding motorcycle oil where you are oil for diesel trucks will be fine.

Thanks a lot guys! My local O'Reilly shop doesn't have motorcycle specific oil (except for mineral oils for Harleys). They have Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W-40 for turbo-deisel trucks (grey bottle). They also have Shell T6 Synthetic 5W-30 "multi-vehicle" (there's a picture of a big rig and a car). Will either of those be good? I'm leaning toward the mobile 1 because that thread you showed me talked about it several times.

I do appreciate the chance to learn. Normally I would eat that oil thread up. Unfortunately I have no time to eat until December!

Just a note, I live in dry, hot, LA (San Gabriel Valley). Temps rarely drop below zero Celsius but sometimes go up to the 40s Celsius.

Thanks again!

Local moto shops, either independent like Cycle Gear or dealer, will have a wide selection of oils.

I use Motul on customer's bikes (unless they specify something different), there's 4 types that they make from full dino to double synthetic.

They don't have this?

I'd lean towards a xxw-50 weight synthetic based on your location, and the year of your bike. If you insist on O'Reilly's, and all they have is the 40 weight, go with the Mobil 1 in 40 weight.

You should cram for this test, and read the oil thread. ;D

To OP.
I will make your life easier.

1) Don't go to your local auto parts store for buying oil and oil filter (well, not for now. Not until you read to the end of this post.)

2) For the oil. Keep in mind that you live / ride in LA. And you commute on it daily, for 22 miles.

Shell Advance 4T Ultra 10W-40

https://motowheels.com/i-20918530-shell-advance-4t-ultra-10w-40-synthetic-oil-liter.html

$15.99 x 4 =$63.96

Or
Motul 300V 10W-40

Buy 4-liter jug

https://motowheels.com/i-7139228-motul-300v-factory-synthetic-10w40-oil-4-liter.html

$75.95

3) Oil filter

Genuine Ducati filter (44440035A) or Hi-Flo (HF153 or HF153RC)
Around $20 for Ducati 44440035A

https://store.bevelheaven.com/OEM-Ducati-Oil-Filter

About $8 for HF153, about $9 for HF153 RC. The only difference between the two of them is the 17mm nut welded on top.
There's nothing special, or "racing" about it.

4) Motowheel's oil change kit

Our sponsor Motowheel sells oil change kit.

$74.99 (Shell advance ultra)

$83.95 (Motul 300v)

5)If you think those prices are too high,  then just buy this one.(As suggested by Howie.)
Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 1gallon jug
(https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/wcsstore/CVWEB/staticproductimage//N4019I/large/11461091_sll_550045347_pri_larg.jpg)

around $20, you can get it at Walmart.

This is all great information. Thanks a lot! You all seem like a friendly group. That's cool. I really love this bike and would like to do some things with it. Thanks again.
