Just started doing this last week. Seemed to correlate only when the motor was “coldâ€. Was really bad today after fully warming up. Could this be due to spark plugs? I'm a bit over due and I've noticed a more pronounced back fire lately. Usually after decelerating then throttling up again.
Bike has ~45k miles on it.
Check spark plugs . . . IF, ONLY IF, continues after spark plug change, do 1/4 turn on each air screw

I figured that might have something to do with it. I've ordered them, but no one has them in stock so I get to wait.
Ok. New issue. It didn't want to start this morning. The battery was low. Held down the starter and it finally started to crank and turned over. Rode to class but it was stumbling a bit more. It stalled as I was pulling into my parking spot. Went to class and when I came out a few hours later, same thing. So I went to the menu and the battery was flashing “LOWâ€. Got it started and the readings were all over the place. Bouncing from 11.x to no more than 13.1, even when holding the RPMs at 2k. Was able to make it home by staying in lower gears and holding the throttle at or above 2k. No idea what's going on. FYI I have a shorai battery.
Fluctuation might be an alternstor issue . . . There could be a short somewhere too
Dropped it off at the dealer. Hopefully I'll hear something tomorrow. Luckily I have an extended warranty. 3 years, 43k miles!!
I doubt it covers the Shorai.

Of course not, but the battery isn't responsible for the lack of charging.

True, if in fact it isn't charging.
Dealer called back today. Slight oil leak behind the cover fouled some components (stator and rectifier) and the exhaust control valve is also malfunctioning.
So an easy fix?
If by easy you mean replacing the components, yes. But they'll also need to address the oil leak so it doesn't happen again. Plus it's going to take a while to get the parts once the warranty company provides the authoization. Estimate is two weeks. That sucks because it's my daily transportation. It also means I'm going to have to pay for parking at school because the vehicle I'm using doesn't have a registered parking pass (the motorcycle pass is free).
Ok, dealer called back again. Apparently the cover for the exhaust valve is bent (not sure what from, don't remember hitting anything and the bike has never been down) so that's not covered under the warranty, but it's only an $18 part. The rest of it is covered under warranty. They noted a minor fork seal leak and they're covering replacing both fork seals as well! So yeah, it's mostly covered, but it won't be done for probably another 10 days. I'm having withdrawals already!
You wouldn't happen to know what your valves look like? I have 54k on mine and have been chasing a carbon problem since the begining...never had idle issues but starting got harder and harder and forget about a hot start if it stalls ...

They're doing a service at the same time so I'll find out when I pick it up. I suspect they'll need some adjustment as the last few thousand miles I've noticed an increase in popping exhaust on deceleration. So much so that I could initiate it about 4/5 times. hard decel followed by a slight throttle input would cause a nice POP!
I fried a valve @26k miles...was on the verge of dropping another 26k miles later...intakes were covered in carbon...ended up walnut blasting them clean ...still troubled by what's the cause, apparently I'm the only one with issues

One more thing....while the stator cover is off replace the gear shifter return spring!!! Or at the very least look at it...mine snapped in two from friction, found it on my oil magnet

Well, I periodically run some Lucas fuel system cleaner through it. But I'm sure if they notice anything while it's apart I'll get a call.

Are you psychic? [laugh]
The shop called Saturday to tell me they found part of the shifter return spring on my drain plug! It had been a little difficult to shift into neutral unless I was still moving or the motor was off. That's going to be replaced under warranty as well. Definitely getting my money out of that purchase and still have another 2 years left on it. This repair alone was over $2k!
Wow.
Keep using your powers for good. [thumbsup] ;D
There are two variants of the spring ..every early monster uses the bad one...I'll put up a write up...it's really a simple fix and the part is only 5 bucks

You might still have issues shifting as all the springs in your clutch pack are no doubt out of spec too...I measured mine at 18k and all were just outside the service limit...no doubt a cause to the frequent false neutrals...I didn't bother replacing them then but next oil change I'm going to as I'm getting more lately but only when the engine is wound out...you know when you need it to shift...lol
Finally got the bike back. I have nothing but good things to say about Southern California Motorcycles. They worked with my extended warranty company and got everything covered by my plan including fork seals and front wheel bearings! Bike runs like it's brand new! Here's to another 43k miles!
[thumbsup].
Great to hear about good service.
