2002 Monster S4.
Termi slip on (shop says I have full exhaust)
Open airbox, KN filter.
Iridium NGK DCPR8EIX
Bike was idling around 1k rpm before December 2021.
January 2022 I did bunch of work on it.
Oil change, spark plugs, finished fork seals replacement.
Steady idling.
At some short interval of this work, bike started idling rough
at 1k rpm and below, and dropping to 500 rpm and when idling at a light, would turn off.
Shop did TPS reset and throttle bodies adjustments.
DOES NOT TURN OFF!!! yippie [clap]
It does idle high.
I have not used the CHOKE and start up at about 1.1k rpm then settles to 1.25k rpm when warm.
Feel hi to me but I am sure I will get used to it.
You guys mention that it does need to idle hi.
After riding, I caught her at 1.5k rpm idling... hmm..
Below are some videos but they are very shaky for the most part.
Mostly form self data/ to make sure I see what I see lol.

It's idling a little high, IMO.
I'd take it back to the shop and see if they can drop it to 1100 with an air bleed adjustment.
1250 rpm with a hot motor doesnt worry me, but 1500 rpm is too much. A common error when setting the idle manually (by whatever method) is doing so before the bike is at full operating temp. Shops in a hurry can make that error when the service manager is riding the tech to get the jobs out the door. The exception is when the ECU controls the idle speed in a manner that cant be overridden by manual intervention. In that case only adjusting the software may have an effect.
If they can manipulate the idle rpm via air bleed adjustment or idle control screw then the bike needs to first be thoroughly warmed up.
You 2 guys makes sense.
Called the shop and will see them on Monday.
Having an open air box (meaning the tip air filter cover his pretty much all cut out and is used to hold air filter in place),
what effect does this do to rpm? I imagine when balanced all things being equal minimal affect on rpm as the computer
will read the air/gas mix and adjust injection accordingly. In which case it would depend on the (software) program that is being run by
my computer module.
An open airbox needs tuning adjustments. Was your open airbox part of a Ducati Performance kit?
Doubt it, looks like the stock air box and ex owner, shop cut most of the top off lol.
at 20k miles though, it was taken to a Ducati Shop ( by a friend who owns a used moto dealer ) and so got better price than me
and they did something that required the Red key. After than it ran great and idles at 1k pretty smoothly and would not shut off...
untill this year.
Sounds like it was dropping a cylinder if it was idling that low.
TPS reset? Done with the diagnostic tool? That's not correct for the non linear TPS the S4 Monster has. You need to fix that first.
If it was set up to idle cold without fast idle at 1100, then it will idle high I'd expect.
it sounds very even, steady above 2.5k rpm, even more so above 4k rpm and even more even / steady above 2nd gear; so not sure about not firing on one cylinder.
I figure the shop would have noticed or the computer told them.
TPS was reset. He gave me some volt values but I honestly did not keep the numbers straight in my head.
I was hoping to hear 150 mV as that is what I have read but did not hear that number; he was talking in .6 and other Volts.
This mornings ride was idling about 1.25k rpm when cold/warming up.
After 10 minutes temps were above 200 deg F and then it was idling apx 1.5k rpm again.
Certain will go to the shop again
and
I got my Desmo times manual [popcorn]
QuoteI was hoping to hear 150 mV as that is what I have read
Old number, TPS at its lowest before you adjust to around 300-450 mV.
Thank you guys too....
2nd time he reset the TPS again, and adjusted stuff and was still idling 1500 rpm,
then did an adjustment while a waited and not voila!
1.1k rpm
he said he adjusted "la canchaleta" or "chancaleta" lol. About 15 minutes adjusting from the right side a screw driver (from 15 feet away I was looking)
Pretty sure I must replace my clutch plates and drum basket in the minimum.
But might want to put a slipper clutch; will be searching for answers in next couple days and possibly a post/thread of such.
