Title: HID light for the new Monster 696
Post by: elevy18 on July 27, 2008, 07:47:18 PM
I want to change the yellow dim light that comes stock with the bike for a white bright HID... I am not looking to change the lamp or anything like that, just the way the light looks in front of me so that I am more visible to cars on the road.

Does anyone know where may I buy and install an HID system??? The dealer I bought my bike from sells the HID system for the 696 for $500 plus an hour or two of labor ($105 per hour).  I am pretty sure that they are quite easy to install so I would appreciate some help in that department, as well as, help in finding out where may I buy the HID system at a more reasonable price...

Best regards,

Elliot

You can change the bulb to a PIAA.

Look down about 13 threads.

kopfjager,  Could you please elaborate??? If it only takes a bulb to change, how come the dealer charges $500???  I am sorry, but I am a bit lost....

I checked ebay but I could not find any kit that would fit a Monster 696... are 696's compatible with other Ducati models??? if so, which ones???

If the 696 runs the same type of bulb as all other ducatis, then it would be a H4 HID kit

I have no idea why the dealer charges $500. It definitely involves more than a bulb if you're talking about true HID lights. These are not filament-type incandescent bulbs but rather are arc lights that require high-voltage ballasts to work (since the make light by arcing a current through metal vapor). The heat output can mean that components could melt or burn if they aren't properly selected. They also draw enough current that sometimes fuses or other electrical bits must be replaced. They are inherently somewhat expensive. You can certainly get a kit for much less than $500, but it's possible that the one from your dealer might not mess with your warranty or might integrate better with your bike - I dunno.

If your main goal is to change the color temperature of the light you see in front of you, that is much more cheaply achieved by using a replacement bulb with a different gas mixture or voltage.

The main goal is not to change the color of the light, but to increase visibility for both myself and other vehicles on the road... I just want to be seen.

then you need the He man Visability Kit

Stebel Nautilus mini dual tone airhorn
No exahust system
Two 35watt 4300K HID bulbs. 3000 produces the most light, 4300K is just a tad under 3000K in output, everything else goes downhill from there.
Reflective tape on your bike. (Trust me reflective tape is REALLY noticeable at night) Put them on the side of your frame.  Above your license plate and on your lower triple. and on your helmet. I have one on the back of my helmet.  i got it from MSF, it says DO NOT REMOVE HELMET UNTIL A MEDIC HAS EXAMINED ME.

On the kit we tried, the HID bulb hit the reflector.
