Title: How do you get your Italian bike to forgive you
Post by: caperix on June 26, 2026, 03:18:31 PM
I made the mistake of letting life get in the way and ignored my 848 for a number of years.  Much like an Italian wife/girlfriend it is now letting me know its displeasure.
I started getting it ready to ride by replacing the oil, fuel filter & timing belts.  That was the first area I ran into issues, The horizontal cylinder did not want to line up based off the marks from the old belts.  I went with one tooth off the old belts for what looked correct on the new belts.  Got ready to start it and see if it ran OK & nothing happened.  The lights turned off with the start button but no cranking.  I jumped the starter contactor and it turned over slowly.  So first step was a new battery, unfortunately that made no difference.
I got out the laptop and cable to connect to the VDSTS software and found that the kill switch was not reading the on position.  So I took it apart and cleaned the contacts, success the bike would now crank.  It still did not want to start though.
I pulled the air filter so I could see the injectors, they were just slowly dripping fuel.  I pinched off the return line to make sure it was not a regulator sticking, no change.  So the tank & fuel pump flange came off again.  I found the hose from the pump to the filter came loose, maybe replacing the filter on the other side of the hose disturbed it just enough.  Luckily I had some extra oetiker clamps from the fuel filter replacement.  So I put a new clamp on & reinstalled the pump to the tank.  I jumped the fuel pump to make sure everything was working, fuel now flowed.  Now the tank could go back on, after fighting with the plastic fittings to get them to seal the bike finally started.
Now I need to spend some time running it to make sure nothing else comes loose, then I can finally put the body work back on.  I just wanted to share this adventure to remind everyone to get out and ride your bikes.  Next up is fork seals on the 998 showas on my monster.

👍👏
"Plastic fittings" as in fuel quick connections? If so, replace. They'll be stiff by now and not capable to hold on.

Good luck!
