Title: Timing Devices ? Post by: JDS 07 S4Rs on July 29, 2008, 08:37:15 AM I did a search,, & found nothing on here.
Are any of U guys (or girls) using a Timing Device ? The kind that has a Transmitter & Receiver ! If so, which is the best Bang for the buck? TIA JDS Title: Re: Timing Devices ? Post by: Grio on July 29, 2008, 09:34:27 AM I defer to other who use lap timers (I got one on my wish list though!)
However, check with your local trackday organizers and tracks... Most of the service providers here will post their own beacon...you just place a compatible transponder on your bike. Multiple beacons will foul up your lap times. There typically aren't many problem with compatibilty. Most folks seem to be using the "Ultra lap" timer. It seems pretty inexpensive (seen them new on internet for about $170). Derby was doing some comparing....Derps, any news? Title: Re: Timing Devices ? Post by: derby on July 29, 2008, 04:01:13 PM most of the onboard laptimers will work off the same beacon, so as long as there is one (and only one) at the track, you'll be fine.
every track day i've been to has had somebody ask during the riders meeting if there is a beacon on track. if somebody hasn't already set one out, somebody usually does at that point. if you want to avoid the beacon-hassle, the starlane gps model is the way to go. you'll pay for it, though ($$$). Title: Re: Timing Devices ? Post by: JDS 07 S4Rs on July 30, 2008, 06:52:03 AM Hmmm. No one ever mentioned Beacons during the meetings. I know they use transponders while racing.
I will look into this. I thought each beacon was specific to the Receiver it is sold with ! Starlane GPS,,, twice as much $$$. I better read up on that one B4 I access my Paypal account. Thanx Derby Title: Re: Timing Devices ? Post by: sqweak on July 30, 2008, 09:58:27 AM transponders are the recievers, the beacon is the transmitter. Can't have one without the other.
There are two main type of beacons, IR and Magnetic. IR is what is usually setup ad hoc by an attendee/org. Magnetic is usually built into the track. Title: Re: Timing Devices ? Post by: JDS 07 S4Rs on July 30, 2008, 10:36:33 AM Thanx Sqweak
Dam modern tech. I better make a call to the track,,,,,sheeesh. Frick,,,,,,,I just phoned the Track. He said they may not allow Timing Devices because we are not suppose to be Racing at these events. What kind of BS is that ? ? He wsnt completely sure,,, & said I should phone the Org. I dont really want to stir the pot. I will PM some of the local Trackers. I will eventually get to the bottom of this :) |
