Title: My "angry" monster dual headlight mod....
Post by: whaler on July 30, 2008, 07:55:38 PM
Well, I dusted off my wallet and ordered a set of dual headlights. Of course, being the cheapskate I am, I did all kinds of searching for the best price on the dominator setup. I found that streetfighterstore had the best price.
Only $116 to my door in the US. I did some searching and found a coupon code for 15% off my order (UKBAD), worked like a charm! They arrived here in only 7 days, so not a long wait either.

Aside from that, they bolted right up to the stock brackets, had to cut off the stock wiring harness and use an H4 harness from a local autoparts store. $2.

I had them all bolted up and my 2 year old looked at the bike and screamed "Wall-e!"

Damn it if the little guy wasn't right, it did look like Wall-e!

Or for you older guys, Johhny 5 from "short circuit".

Anyways, since it now had eyes, and it is a Monster after all, I deceided to make it look pissed off. I mocked it up with some electrical tape to see how it looked...

What do you guys think? My plan is to find the exact right look, then mask off the visible area, etch the glass with the sandblaster and paint it black....

Thoughts?

LOL. Dude you kinda had my idea!

i wanted to do that same thing, but instead of using black tpe, i wanted to make angel eyes that go inside  and light up like the MOTOGP symbol. its a half circle with slits.

well it looks awesome, butt, your lowbeams use the top half of the reflector, and you have most of that covered, so your light outbput will suck. you will light up the trees better than the road.

I like the look of dual head lights but I don't like the way it exposed the rat's nest of wires and hoses.

I highly recommend lowering the guages, chopping the bracket, and centering that light. I have clip-ons so it might be a different process though...

These aren't the best pics but they might help...

You can still se wires but not huge gap, I like wires in moderate amounts, especially up front- everything in the back on mine is re-routed...

eesnas, did you have any problems with the speedo cable getting in the way? I know I had to kind of shove mine aside when I was putting on the duals, and that was with the gauges up higher.

I agree with the not wanting the exposed wires, cables and such, but my plan is just to ride it as much as possible until the snow flies, then tear it all apart over the winter, fix the placement of the gauges and such, and get everything powdercoated. Not a huge job, but with a wife, 2 kids, soccer practices & such, and in the full swing of supermoto season, I figure now is not the time to go ripping apart the bike, I'll just ride it out for the rest of the season and address these issues in between snowblowing my driveway and shuttling the kids to hockey!

I cannot take credit for the craftsmanship, I had someone that is highly skilled do all this work for me... From what I remember, it was a tight fit but with a little creativity he made it work. Since I got crashed into I cannot really see the bike right now but I think in that pic I posted my wires are off to the side a little, maybe? I think the throttle line and the quick warmup control was the main challenge, oh yeah brake lines were difficult too but I think that's more the clip-ons. Keep in mind I have resistors stuffed back there too for the blinkers...

EDIT: Does this pic help?

I don't see why looking like number 5 would be a bad thing.

Well, looking like number 5 isn't bad at all, I just don't want the bike to look like number 1, as in your avatar! [cheeky]

Your momma was a snow blower!

Man, I loved that movie as a kid.....

Darn it, I was hoping no one would notice it was a pic of #1 and not 5. I will have to fix it.

"Your momma was a snow blower!" I like to say that to people. They never get it.

paint the eyes on the back of the instrument cluster and veil-thin nipples on the headlights

Its in case you go down, you dont loose the whole lever + the bolt underneath it. or the bolt just shaking loose.
