Title: More wheel porn...
Post by: Chchadder on August 01, 2008, 05:06:20 PM
Finally got out to take some snaps of the new Dymags Kui and I put on last week or so.  Still waiting on new rotor bolts before I really get out and ride since the stock Ducati 'mild steel' bolts had to be drilled, cut, torched, chiseled, and hammered in order to get them out.  Titanium baby!

So the new Dymags are forged aluminum that I got from Duck Stew and they are friggin' beautiful (IMHO)!

Didn't lose anything on the front as far as weight is concerned, but lost two pounds in the rear with an inch larger wheel and one size up on the tire!  Can't wait to get it in some twisties once I wear off the new tire slickness!

And sorry for the dark background.  Was out putting new bars and other odds and ends on until the sun went down.

Oh yeah... Painted the headlight case and headlight ring with black Duplicolor truck bed liner too.  LOVE IT!

Sweet looking bike. What kind of paint did you use to paint your headlight? How do you like the Rizoma Track blinkers. I was thinking of getting those on my bike.

what kind of prep work did you do ,to paint your headlight ring

For the headlight case itself just cleaned it and scuffed it up with a scratch pad.  For the ring, started with some 100 grit and then went to 150 grit once the chrome was gone.  Actually thought about leaving it bare aluminum because it looked really sweet just naked.  It did start to oxidize a bit with a little brownish tint though, so I went ahead and put on the paint, 4-5 coats on each.

All that work on that hot miserable day, and you cant ride cause of some stupid bolts someone forgot to send out.  [bang]

That thing looks sweet man. The pictures dont do justice to how nice those wheels are. The white 7 spokes really bring out the shape of a ducati.

Next time your rear wheel is off, paint the caliper carrier black.

Otherwise, it looks stellar man!

Great idea!  The rear was pretty easy to drop so maybe that will be coming up soon.  Any particular type of paint recommended?

Duplicolor truck bed liner.  And love the Rizoma's.  I think I may have too much Rizoma on the bike...NAH!!!

I succest that you tape blinker wires black or use some covering, they are ugly red wires.

Scratch that.  I found out how to remove the ring.

Such blasphemy posting links to that "other" site...lol!

And the tank is not swapped, just repainted by DucPainter.

Thanks all for the kudos.  Its still a work in progress.   ;D

so those were the wheels you were talking about stu.

nice wheels they would have looked sweet on my yellow ducati.  maybe next time, just couldn't swing the money for the wheels with all the maintanance costs of the bike coming up in the next couple of months.  i'll be having nick do that work probably by sept.

I've added three to four coats to my ring so far after sanding it and mine looks too textured.  It's like the more coats you add the more flatt and rubbery it looks.  Did you put a coat of gloss over yours or something?

I used the bedliner stuff because of the texture, so I am a bit biased.  No clear coat on it at all and after 4 coats or so the level of texture actually seems a bit deeper.  I'd just do a flat black if you don't want the rough look.

Is yours holding up well?  I let mine sit for a while then decided to start over.  I just peeled it right off no problem at all.  Worried that it's not grabbing adaquaately.  Maybe it needs to set overnight.  Oh, and has yours faded at all?

I used it on my sprocket and timing belt covers in previous sessions about six months ago and they still look great.  The timing belt cover is starting to show a little wear but is still looking good.  No fading at all.  If yours peeled off I would say something in the prep didn't go right, though there's not really much to the prep either.  I let it sit for about ten minutes between coats and then let it sit overnight.  Came out fine each time.
