I'm noticing a big difference between how TOB got started and this one. TOB was sleepy and slow to gain momentum (and posts) giving everyone a chance to get acquainted and settled in. This one's pedal to the metal and hell bent for leather from the get-go!
Balancing that, there's an admin/mod core that is already grooved in on how they want to handle this place and what they want it to be, where on TOB the team was built over time and they figured it out as the membership and post count grew.
Just an observation, not a value judgement. The dynamics here will be different. Maybe we have a psychologist or social scientist who wants to do a thesis on this ;D
wonder if there is any kind of record for how fast membership on a site grows.......... 8)
Excited to see this place hit 1,000 members...
The big hurdle will be when this site overtakes TOB on a Google search for "Ducati Monster Forum" or "Ducati Monster Message Board" wt:

I was actually thinking of that earlier. That is the major obstacle, in that it's the number one way we get new members. It's gonna take work, but we'll get there.
TOB members seem like they're doing a good job of getting the word out, i know I've sent quite a few emails already as have many many others..
Uhh, TOB .... "The Old Board", "Terrible Otter Bastards", "Taming Old Bluehairs"?
Just trying to de-stupid myself a little.

it is amazing how fast this place grew
I wonder how large the drop in traffic at TOB is?
I also think they have fake numbers for the amount of "guests veiwing" Some numbers are bigger now then when everyone was still there.

I Googled "Ducati Monster Forum". TOB's #1, we're #20.
Well you know that they've optimized TOB for search engines. It's generally a big mod on forums to get them ranked highly on searches that aren't exactly what the forum is looking for.. with some work we could over take it easy if we develop ours better then theirs.
As I understand Google PageRank technology (what determines the order your search results show up in), the key is being linked to on other websites. Basically, you need lots of other people referring to this place as THE site to be for ducati monster information and community. That will cause us to be ranked above the others. No matter how many members, that kind of "being situated within a network" where other places link to us will take a little time. But we should encourage it by getting the word out constantly.

+1If you want this place to grow, the best thing you can do is to get other websites to link here. Link to us from your website, put us in your facebook/myspace/linkedin profile, link here from your flickr or picasa page, blog about us, post a link to here on other forums or in blog comments, put a link to here into a wiki, twitter about us.
If you want to get serious about it, play around with the link text too, try and make the linked text some good keyword bait for what people are likely to search for, something like:
<a href='http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org'>Ducati Monster forum</a>
and
<a href='http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org'>Ducati Monster forums</a>
and
<a href='http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org'>Ducati Monster help</a>

and
<a href='http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org'>Monster maintenance</a>
and
<a href='http://ducatimonsterworldwide.org'>my favourite Ducati site</a>
That'll help other people find us...

Someone get a WIKI page going.... NOW!
As it happens, I work at a company that does web development. We have a Search Engine Optimization department, I'll see what I can learn.
A friend of mine from that department will take a look at this site this weekend and see what can suggest. :)
Good call big! wt:
BTW, do page meta keywords have any impact at all? I know they did 10 years ago, but now?
Here's what this page has: "PHP, MySQL, bulletin, board, free, open, source, smf, simple, machines, forum"
I mentioned this in another post, but this looks like the right place.
If you've put references to the other board onto other motorcycle web sites, you can go back and edit those posts, fixing them to point here. That can both get rid of one reference to TOB while adding another reference to this one.
I'm working on that right now with a few web sites that I regularly visit.
I will report back what my friend tells me either some time this weekend or on Monday to help with our ranking.
Keywords can help but not an overloaded amount. That's what he's told me so far. ;)

Yes, to some degree - not like it used to though. Also, the links help.
Other stuff we'll be doing:
Submitted our sitemap XML to google. This lets google know you exist and it tells its spider where to crawl so that it indexes the entire site better.
Small things. Table should all have summary tags with some description of what's inside the table - good SEO points.
There's a few other things we'll be doing, but I'd rather not discuss them in an open forum as SEO is kind of a black art and I'd rather not share ALL my secrets...

that the kind of stuff you're looking for?
Just did a search for "Ducati Monster Forum"
this site comes up on the first page, but the title of the page shows up as "LOGIN"
Is there any way to rename the page it is linking to so it says something better?
So whats the over/under on us hitting the 1K member mark before Midnight Pacific Time?
My bet is for over. its 1076 to be exact.
Nah. IF we hit 1K by midnight, it'll be like 1003 1004...
984 @ 12:08 PST...
i was gonna wait up and watch, but ran out of cocktail sauce :-\
we get some east coast sign on action in the morning, and i bet she's over 1k before i check in with my coffee later this morning ;D
Yeah, I won't check again until about 0730 PST...
0600 EST, 989 members and counting.

Maybe not that long, when I do a search on Google, quite a few links just take me to the new DML search page and when I fill that thing out it forgets what I wanted in the first place. :bang

Did Cain get a pat on the back? I was going to send him a congratulatory PM, but apparently he hadn't gone through the full procedure yet, because the system didn't recognize his username when I tried it.
I suggest that
everybody send him a note to thank him for pushing us past 1000 members. ;)

It'll fix itself up when google catches on that we're open for business, I'd expect to see it change in the next few days.
(It's like that 'cause this site went up originally at the end of Jan, and was "closed" so all you saw if you weren't registered, approved, and logged in was the login screen - googles web crawlers weren't registered users, so that login screen was all they thought the site contained.)

So when is this one selling? [laugh]
this is a little bit funny; google "ducati monster worldwide forum" and the first link is to ToB but the TEXT is:
"Ducati Monster Forum: Discuss all Ducati Monster motorcycles both new ... Moved to DMF, as in the ducati monster forum at ducati monster worldwide dot org ..."
that's got to be worth something; it's okay if ToB shows up for DMF searches if it's due to the bailing messages containing the link to DMF.
