Title: The CB Project...
Post by: marvellous on August 02, 2008, 11:14:15 PM
Today, we bought a 1978 Honda CB400A for $200... and boy is it a project!  The plan will be to tear it down and build it back up for My Vixen to ride around being the proper Hooligan she is... :P

So here are some pics

What do you think?  Saltlick has already stepped up with some hints and pics and such.  G has a pretty good idea on what she wants the bike to turn out like (silver tank, black frame, etc)...

This is going to be fun... :)

That thing kicks ass. Shoot, it's got an engine and tires. Throw on some levers and call it good. The rest is personality. 8)

why do I have to be the only negative voice?

I advise against the black frame and silver tank

I did that

and I shouldn't have

pick any color other than silver

unless it has a special meaning or something

Actually she's leaning towards a dark metallic blue for the frame and the "Paul Smart" silver for the tank... with maybe the same blue for pin stripping and such... I think it'll look hawt!  It's not our fault you're color blind and such... <insert taint comment here>   [cheeky]

Oh and mmm... ( . )( . )

Should we purchase a Clymer's Manual, the Haynes, or this?  http://www.repairmanual.com/catalog/6141307

Yes.

I bought an original 70's printing of the Clymer manual for the 1973 CL175.  After browsing through it, I'd say it was worth every penny.  If you can also find a factory manual, I'd probably get one of those too.

Factory manuals are good and will have the proper numbers for clearances and things like that.  Clymer and Haynes are usually better at detailed steps and tips and tricks for making procedures easier.  If you're only getting one, I'd go with the aftermarket.  You can always get numbers from someone on the web.  Lots of cool modern goodies for old bikes these days, like electronic ignition units to replace points and condenser.  Nice to have.

You can download the manual in PDF format right off that site i told you about. I downloaded mine and printed it at work, about 500 pages worth. I then hole punched it and put it into a binder. Ill find it for you, and post the link. Its cool to have it online as well for quick reference points without having to drag out the book.

Can you send me the link to this place?  I'd like to get the factory manual for the '73 CL175.

Heres the link to my old bikes info:

http://www.sohc4.net/index.php?title=CB550&Itemid=146

Check around, it has everything you need (manual, wiring diagram all info) for all the old hondas...i dont see your bike though either. maybe i am missing it.

Oh... that wiki is for the SOHC inline 4's... the CL175 is a twin.

Actually... the 400A is also a twin, which would explain why it ain't on the sohc4.net wiki.

For single cam I-4 Hondas, that website looks like a great resource!  I wonder if there's a wiki like that for the old twins, too...
