Title: So a free vehicle....
Post by: TiAvenger on August 05, 2008, 10:13:16 AM
Danielle's (my fiance) mom asked me last night if I wanted her old 93 2 wheel drive jeep Cherokee.

Basically if I can get it to pass smog, she will sign it over for free (she dosn't want to deal with it)

It needs new tires and a new drivers seat (mount broke off)

Rough estimate for all the repairs is 500 min 1000 max.....

The only down side is I pay 260 bucks a yr for my scooter insurance, and it will be 400 every 6 months on the jeep (which I wont drive that much anyway)

Whatcha ya all think?

tell her to donate it and get a tax write-off.

Max value of that thing is probably a 1000 bucks anyhow.  I wouldn't waste my time fixing it.  Do like Knight said and donate it.

I forgot to add that the only vehicle I own is my scooter, which I ride year around.

Kinda hard to go camping, hunting, fishing, and tow bikes (going to need a tow vehicle for the new bike next year)

i am bike only and don't have any issues until they are both broken at the same time.

insurance, maintenance, gas, and registration is going to cost more than renting a new AWD vehicle for your camping trip...

it's cool that you only own a scooter  [thumbsup] [moto]

does your home owner insurance cover the scoot? sometimes if you can combine the policies..... you can save some money.

Nope, the scooter insurance is stupidly cheap.  In fact the monster was cheaper for a years full coverage than the jeeps PLPD.... which doesn't make much sense to me.

Once or twice, yes but say 3 times (3 days each) it washes.

That's the first thing that came into my mind.

[laugh]

It kinda breaks down to, a) donating it is a last resort, I believe it was her first new car, this way its still in the family. b) both her, and D dont like me riding the scoot through our famous fog on a country 2 lane road 7 miles to work. (Ive been scoot only for two years now, and it does not bother me)

Basically she will get rid of it either way, but for 500 bucks it would cost to fix she just thought I would be interested.

That way when its super foggy or raining I can cage it, and I dont have to ride 60 miles with my shot gun strapped on my back to go hunting on the vino 125  [laugh]

Its the little 2.5 inline 4 , with a tow package. gets like 17-25 mpg

edit:  D and I could go out and buy a new car as well,  I just dont really need a car.  Plus when D finishes her BA in 15 months, we are buying her a new car (or possibly an used porsche  [thumbsup]) and her old one will be a backup.

you have a storage compartment on the vino right? that's where you keep the critters.

if it's bigger than that then you strap it to your back.

as for the shotgun, get a rifle holster and attach it to the front of the bike like they did in WW2

i know this is a full bike, but i know i have seen it on scooters too

Admittedly I'm not a rugged camper, I prefer a joint with flush toilets near where I stake my tent. But if your girlfriend has a vehicle, couldn't you take that on the camping trips etc?

I've done all those things (sans towing a bike) on a two wheeled vehicle, and so can you.

Why do you need a tow vehicle anyways?

You'll spend more than you'd like fixing up that jeep-it's not worth it, even for free. Take the extra cash, and save it, or buy other toys, like better, smaller, and lighter camping gear. It's just going to be something else you have to take care of-boo to that.

you can buy jeep cherokees all day long for 500 bucks

4x4 ones at that

there is no way it is going to cost you 500-1000 dollars for a seat and some tires

especially a 2wd that you can put any 100-dollar-a-set-schwab specials on

I take it you are going to a mechanic to get those numbers?

jeep seats go in with 4 bolts

Drive it to a junk yard shop Scrap metal is about .13cents a pound. sell it lol. For $1,000 + the gas guzzling jeep engine, you could probably get by with a cheap ass honda that will be sufficent for rainy days. of you can just get your girl a scoot!

That insurance figure doesn't seem right.  I got a free vehicle ('97 Taurus) and I only insure it for liability & under/uninsured motorist for $37 every 6 months ~

You do not live in California  ;)

Nope, considering considering I purchased my 3-bed, 2-bath brick house with .5 acre lot for under $1000/month
