911 systems choking on non-emergency calls
Pranksters, clueless callers block lines for legitimate crises

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26040857/

QuoteIn California, for example, as many as 45 percent of the more than 8 million cell phone calls to 911 each year are for non-emergencies, officials said; in Sacramento, it could be as high as 80 percent. Those calls block the lines for callers who really need urgent help.

Like this guy in Floriduh is any different?

Man Calls 911 For Incorrect Subway Order

By, Associated Press & KOLD News 13 Live This Morning Anchor/Reporter, Jenny Anchondo

You can bet a Jacksonville, Florida man wishes he had just paid the five-bucks for a foot long at Subway.

Instead, he was charged with making a false 911 call.

Reginald Peterson ordered a Spicy Italian Sub with the works.

Sandwich artists put mayo on mustard on it, but no sauce.  That put Peterson over the edge and he called 911 to complain.

He called a second time to complain officers weren't arriving fast enough.

Subway workers told police the 42-year-old became belligerent and yelled when they were fixing his order.

They locked him out of the store when he left to call police.

When officers arrived, they tried to calm Peterson and explain the proper use of 911. Those efforts failed, and he was arrested on a charge of making false 911 calls.

Or this guy:

It's especially galling when the caller is someone who obviously should know better. Take Gabe Pacheco, a lieutenant with the fire and rescue squad in Monroe County, Fla.

Pacheco was put on paid administrative leave last month after he called 911 to report a non-existent boating accident. The sheriff's report said Pacheco wanted to cover up the fact that he was going to be late for a shift change.

Hooray for media fearmongering!

I didn't see link to the study that determined how many emergencies did not get a response from or got a late response due to the "lines being blocked" by all of these other calls. Buuuuuuuut, I did see that maybe possibly 80% of something bad is happening so that's a lot and there is choking involved and we are all in daaaaaaaaaaanger because of it! So basically this article is another part in the mainstream media's long, "ZOMG some people are dumb! AND THEY COULD KILL YOU AND RAPE YOUR CHILDREN!!" That is one of the worst articles I've ever read. Filled heresay, guesses and just plain bullshit.

I feel dumber for having read that and you should be ashamed not only for spreading this garbage around the internet but also for doing it as a pathetic attempt to stereotype 37,000,000 people.

Stop it.

Stupid Califorians adopting a law that every other state in the union will adopt 10 years later because it is obvious that people need to be punished for being stupid and abusing a public resource:

QuoteLast month, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law imposing a $50 fine for a second non-emergency 911 call. Penalties rise to $250 for the fourth call.
