So today is the first day of the Iowa State Fair.
Any food you can imagine dipped in batter, deep fat fried, and served to the unwashed masses. It's a great day.
If you have never been, it is definitely one of those must do before you die things. Not only do they have unthinkable food creations but there are also carnie folk, circus freak sized women escorted around by men that are 1/8th their size feeding off of their scraps like remora do with sharks, and the world famous Bud Tent.
If you can imagine it, you can see it at the Iowa State Fair. My personal favorite...the has been bands that flock to play the Grandstand. And i am not just saying that because I won front row tickets to see Def Leppard and Everclear.
For sure, you should visit Iowa if only for this one reason.
pour some fried sugar on me.... [laugh]

i've had them. i nearly puked on a stripper because of it too. it's rare that i get naseous from eating something strange, that nearly killed me and the other 2 guys that ate one.
also, i'm not driving to Iowa for fried foods on a stick. esp if it's at a fair. fair's are evil.
besides, i can gt all that around me too ;D
I saw the title of this thread and thought, "this has 'Midwestern' written all over it." [laugh] [laugh]

I've only had two and they didn't disagree with me.

Oh, I remember those! It's been too long, what's the difference between an Elephant Ear and a Funnel Cake?

I'm not familiar with elephant ears so I looked it up on the all knowing Wikipedia.
Elephant ear:

Funnel cake:

Funnel cake is called such because the dough is pushed through a funnel into the hot oil to fry. Looks like elephant ears are the same dough but kept in one big piece. Both are needed in my belly right now.
Food on a stick? Immediately makes me think of José Jalapeño on a stick:

First thing I thought of, too!
Pickle on a pencil?
A buddy of mine has come up with a tasty little treat... we may be making a batch this weekend, I will take pics for Bacon thread if we do.
Take a Costco corndog
pull stick out
wrap in Bacon (making sure to overlap, as the bacon will shrink) & attach with toothpicks
deep fry for a few minutes
put a slice of cheddar on top
nuke for 10 seconds to melt cheese
insert stick back in
apply gel to defibrillation paddles & chest
Enjoy the Bacon yummy goodness!

that sounds as good as a bacon burger dog.
The New Jersey State Fair a/k/a The Sussex County Farm and Horse Show is going on now too. If you're in NJ you should check it out. It sounds pretty similar. It's great if you like to look at farm animals and confuse people for said farm animals.
I absolutely love it and have only missed it once.
our fair has a lumberjack contest, tractor pulls, horse team pulls...
... and the best food at the fair is by far the
KeTTLe CoRN!!! [popcorn]
it's sweet & salty goodness!
I can eat fair corndogs and strawberry shortcake until the cows come home. Or 'go home' ... or whatever takes a really long time at a state/county fair. How about waiting in line for the Whirly-Gig.. yeah... that.
Yep, it's that time again. The MN state fair is just around the corner. :)
Mmmm.....deep fried Snickers bar. Yes, you read that right. That would be a Snickers bar, on a stick naturally, dipped in donut batter and fried to golden goodness.
Hell, yes. ;D
Well worth the drive to the Twin Cities.
The best part of the Iowa fair is the big farm animal contest. The blue ribben pigs have balls the size of basketballs.

East Side night tonight at the Iowa State Fair. The cream of the crop of Iowans all come out of the woodwork and entertain the masses.
