Title: offroad excursion...
Post by: KnightofNi on August 07, 2008, 11:41:56 AM
i don't suppose anyone from the NE has a dualsport and wants to find a route that is mostly offroad and will take a few days to complete. ???

i'm thinking it should be camping along the way and cooking food on a fire (or small campstove if you bring one)

originally i was thinking it would be cool to do it near a stream or somewhere that fishing could take place for food, but now i'm thinking MREs would be a better choice.

anyone?

ohh yeah, i'm going in 2 weeks. 8/22 - 8/25. I was thinking of doing whatever slab mileage i needed to do on thurs 8/21 so i can hit dirt right away on friday morn.

through dirt and mud....

i'm not opposed to riding a few hrs away (4-5) and meeting up with someone. however, i think halfway between us is closer to a 7 hr ride on the XR (i have to stop and give my ass a break every couple of hrs)

Wish I had an offroad bike, I would definitely be into that.  If you want any info about ultr-light compact camping gear or food/ drink let me know and I will try to help.

get dehydrated food, cheaper than MREs and just add 2 cups of boiling water. have fun  [thumbsup]

that's pretty much what I meant by MREs. I'm an ARMY brat and anything of that nature is considered part of it. (i still have quite a few of the heater packs stored away)

I'll check with my riding budy who is a GPS guru.  If you're willing to ride down here, we can plan out a place to camp, ride, and ride some more.  What do you have?

You can ghetto balance.  2 jacks stands and a greased up broom stick (insert anal joke here)

Put the broom stick through the wheel where the axle goes and put it on the jack stand so it won't touch the ground.  Rotate 1/4 turns and wait.  It should rotate to heavy side down.  if it doesn't it's balanced, if it does rotate to a heavy bottom, the top is where you put your weights.  [thumbsup]

I did this to the monster before I got a balancer and it worked fine.  Make sure to triple check everything.

it's $30 to have them mount and balance the tire. i'm fine with that. i can and will do my own tire changes if i need to, but they can generally do all of it in the time it takes me to just get the tire off the rim.

I want a DRZ 400sm....I just need to figure out how to buy the SM and a DUC at the same time.....  Maybe I can sell the house  [evil]....or trade in my CRF230l, but that bike is stupid easy to maintain, and not to mention the 70 mpg it gets with my not so small frame  ;D.

I'll check with my friend once he gets back from Maine.  What sort of time frame are you looking at?  I'm thinking NC mountains or George Washington National Park in Va.

unfortunately i only have 4 days (8/22-8/25) but i am trying to fanangle another whole day. getting time off is becoming difficult lately. :'(

that's part of the reason i'm willing to punish my backside with a 5 hr ride on slab on the dirtbike seat.
