Title: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: Duc Fever on August 12, 2008, 07:52:55 AM Anybody replaced the stock handgrips with aftermarket ones? Is it easy? Looking for recommendations, tips/tricks etc. for doing so. Pics are great as always!

Plus, they're cheap... Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: hypurone on August 12, 2008, 10:21:47 AM I also run the Gel Pro Grips. Not a big deal to install, just be careful with the throttle side if you use grip glue and have to trim to fit (you most likely will)
Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: NAKID on August 12, 2008, 12:27:56 PM All I had to do with the grips was cut a hole for the bar end weights...
Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: metallimonster on August 12, 2008, 12:34:21 PM Okay my second stupid question of the day. Are all grips universal? If not, what size do I need to get?
I think it is 7/8 but I am not for sure. Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: S2daRk on August 12, 2008, 11:53:32 PM Just installed a pair of progrip superbike gels (open end #780). Great fit; perfect length with no trimming at all. You can easily remove the throttle tube assembly and bring to the store to match up a set of grips.
My throttle tube has a dish "cone" shape where it meets the control. It also has a little ridge at the opposite end of the tube. The grips I got accomodated both the dish and the ridge. Many of the throttle grips I saw just had a flat doughnut like the clutch side, those wouldn't have fit well. Also some were a little too short. I think it is 7/8 but I am not for sure. bars should be 7/8. i think most everything is, with the exception of harleys, and maybe a few of the more enormous japanese cruisers. http://www.pjsparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=264&products_id=84 love 'em and took 10 minutes to install, the left grip was tight, had to drift it onto the bar with a block of wood.... Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: Carman on August 13, 2008, 07:18:44 PM I was going to try the compressed air trick to get mine off, will let you know how it works when I get home in a couple weeks
Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: somegirl on August 13, 2008, 07:20:29 PM If you are going to go to the work of replacing the grips, think about adding in heated grips at the same time.

In my previous life I have exploded a few and fired a few off a set of bars like a bullet. Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: S2daRk on August 13, 2008, 08:35:08 PM Do any DMFers have the pricey Rizoma Lux grips? If so, post some pics ;D

I think they look the business and provide comfort.

Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: Spider on August 17, 2008, 10:47:36 PM slide a nice long flat head screwdriver up the old grip and spray in some WD-40, then penetrate a little more, lubricate, then gently rotate, pull and voila! the grip comes off...no knife or compressor needed.
Title: Re: Aftermarket Hand Grips Post by: q monster on August 18, 2008, 12:47:02 AM i fitted rizomas a few weeks ago - very nice. had to drill a new hole for the throttle pin so the grip lined up with the end of the bar, but otherwise easy job. took about 15 minutes. feel great, look v hot.
