Gentlemen and ladies:

is there a non-destructive way to get the stock rubber grips off? (shove an air compressor in there - don't have one - but that could work!)

(I did a topic search and nadda!)

also...

is there a photoshop guru in the house...I'd like to have some images altered to reflect a paint job on the bike (one of next years tasks)

As for getting the grips off, I had my bars changed at the same time so Flywheels did it for me.
Maybe some sort of lubricant could do the job?
Really just guessing though. I might be more help for your PS work.

the easiest way I have found is to get your self a Phillips head screw driver ,a very narrow one cover it with WD40 slide it between the grip and the bar all  the way the length of the grip being gentle rotate it like you are a screwing a screw adding some WD as it goes naturally around the bar. it will slip off in a jiffy  [thumbsup]

There you go, I knew there'd be a lubricant involved, I wasn't spinning s#@t was I.

use hairspray to put your new ones on [thumbsup]

Paul, I'm a bloke, lubricant I've got plenty....hairspray...not so much!  ;D

Loktite the grub screws :-[ (lesson learned on last DMF ride)

It's just easier to cut them off and buy new ones. Trust me, $35 saves a lot of frustration. Plus you get new grips :)

guys...when installing Rizoma grips - I have to move the left hand side controls 1cm (so they sit flush with the shorter grip) - knowing what some guys said about throttle and idle controls and bars being turned left last week...

then right hand side - I obviously have to either chop the bars down or re drill a new hole for the throttle control to sit in?

geez, didn't see all this coming!

Sorry Spider she's out. Hers was easy as it was a whole new handlebar as well.

As for mine, I decided I could cope with gappy. I have a gap between the left grip and the controls but this is minimised by the tapered bar ends. On the throttle side another hole was drilled so you can now see the old one.

.... and for the record I know the Boss used something long, skinny and well lubed to get the old grips off.

You have long slender fingers don't you Spider? Just leave the controls where they are, probably suit you better anyway, plus a gap isn't that bad  :-X

Will have to do something on the throttle side though as the grip and throttle control need to come together. The gaps are significant but probably prevented me from getting shorty levers.

i fitted my rizoma grips a few weeks ago - throttle side drilled a new hole - very hard to see the old one with all the other stuff there. only trick is to drill the right size so that the pin goes in easy but snug. on the clutch side easy to line up right at the end so no gap. fit should take you about 15 minutes.
old grips - i can't see myself using them again so i got out the knife [cheeky]

don't like the OEM levers though - too far away - thinking of getting Titax shorty levers in black

put down the Stanley knife Brendan....let's think about things before we start slicing grips off all willy-nilly like, eh!

here's another question - do rizoma mirrors come with a protective surface that has to be removed over the mirror surface - or is that blue colour the tint of the glass>?

Like I always say, If in doubt, knife it out     Actually I can answer the mirror question for you Spider. The mirror is tinted blue. Are mine the same? does it look ok?

WD-40 comes with a very narrow plastic straw.. would that fit under the grip? You could then just squirt it in.  [thumbsup]

It looks gay. I hopped off the bike and some old betty came up with a pale pink wash put through her perm (on her way to the bowls, Ita?) and said "nice mirrors sonny buy!".

Everytime I look in mine there is some handsome bastard there....I can't promise the same for you though  ;D

Oops, meant to say gaps are not significant .... perhaps not too signficant.

And yes the blue tint is permanent (although I don't think all the Rizoma mirrors have it) .... should have a cool, calming effect on you.

in a previous thread you had mentioned working on the bike (naked, daughter of a mechanic etc) and I admit when I was playing round with the grips and control bodies I though where is Jukie and her tool belt - I need a powerdrill (don't own one - not much use on the bicycles!).

I'm waiting until I install the new top clamp and Magura bars - then I'll drill (or more likely get Madalf too!) and put the new grips and barends on....but you were spot on...the mirrors have really altered the look of the bike (and I can see behind me now!)
