Title: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: TAftonomos on August 14, 2008, 06:41:21 PM Well camera is back. Trouble is, while I've been riding the bike over 1500 miles since I made the carbon hanger....it's cracked.
I knew it wasn't thick enough, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. I'm all out of 12K (19 ounce) cloth, but will have some next week, and I'll be making a super thick hanger then. The part cracked where I had drilled it for a mounting screw, and I hadn't used any kevlar there. It probably cracked when I drilled it, and then the vibe did it in. No damage to the bike, nothing fell off, but I'd need to make sure what I'm making will last before I offer one for sale. Now, on to part 2. Since I had some red kevlar/carbon laying around, I made a few exhaust guards for the 999 boys. Keep in mind they arn't finished, straight out of the mold. I started wet sanding one, I've got the rest done now. I just need to get them cleared and they'l look like a million bucks. I also made a headlight bracket for the monster. Stupid me didn't pay attention to which piece I put on the outside, so there is a yellow piece of kevlar thread showing.... [bang] [bang] Oh well, I've got about 50 yards of material so I'll make some more. They obviously still need to be drilled and cleared. Also made a few sets of red heel guards. Should be cool when I pull them out of the bag tomorrow morning :) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/DSC_0336.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/DSC_0335.jpg) Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: DucatiBastard on August 14, 2008, 06:48:50 PM looks very nice, i take it the heel/exhaust guards are for the stock exhaust? i ask because i've got Sil-Moto pipes and need some guards, i was trying to make some out of thick aluminum but they look kinda shitty, and the alum. would probably transfer too much heat. IIRC the mounts are about 17 cm apart. will you be selling these in regular carbon?
-shit, re-read your post, for the 999, any chance for the monster? BTW your bike looks Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: TAftonomos on August 14, 2008, 06:52:18 PM I've got a set of guards for the S*R bikes in the bag as I type :)
Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: DucatiBastard on August 14, 2008, 07:05:33 PM sweet, are the mounts 17 cm apart? are they for sale?
Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: TAftonomos on August 14, 2008, 07:18:16 PM I havn't measured them, but they are the stock heel guards on my S4R (07'). Should be the same. When I pop them out of the bag tomorrow, I'll check for you. I can make you a set yes.
Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: DucatiBastard on August 14, 2008, 07:43:14 PM Thanks, definitely interested if they fit, what'll they run? I've got plenty of [bacon] [bacon] [bacon] ;D

I skipped using PVA (mold release film) on this round of parts as an experiment. The wax repelled/pushed away some of the resin in certain spots. Thats easy to fix, just dab on more resin, wet sand, then clear.
Problem I had was there are a few bubbles in the tight corner. I was rushed doing the layup as the epoxy was starting to kick, and I probably wasn't as careful as I should have been. I'll bag another set tonight and take my time. The headlight brackets turned out PERFECT. Although they need to set up for another day or 2. Then I'll mount them and make sure they are stiff enough. If not, back to the bagger with more layers of CF. FYI, all these parts are 100% CF. I'm not using any voo-doo black fiberglass filler in there anywhere :) Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: TAftonomos on August 15, 2008, 11:12:22 AM Obviously they need to be finished up (clear'd), but here are the headlight brackets and failed firset attempt at the heel guard:
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/Monsterheelguard.jpg) Headlight brackets turned out great though :D (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/MonsterHeadlightbracketRed1.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/MonsterHeadlightbracketRed.jpg) (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y54/TheoAftonomos/CarbonWerxs/MonsterHeadlightbracketRed2.jpg) Will need to be trimmed/cleared. I'm after an all black bike, so I'll post them FS when I get them finished. Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: hypurone on August 15, 2008, 12:55:33 PM Hey Theo,
What are you using to trim the parts? I may need to severely modify my DP hugger after the addition and repositioning of my 6.0 BST rear wheel. Drilling has been no problem for me but I am still searching for a "clean cutting" tool/method. My Dremel works well but is very dusty... Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: TAftonomos on August 15, 2008, 12:58:00 PM Dremel with the diamond wheel is what I hear works best. When the parts are "green", you can trim them with a sharp set of sheers, after that it's a cutting wheel or dremel really.
Wear a cheap-o mask to keep from inhaling the dust....not the best thing for you. PS Motored-sports has an airbox for 45.00 should we take up a collection among the interested parties that want a CF airbox, to purchase and ship it to you? One other question, were you planning on making a full lid or open lid for it? Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: DucNrun on August 18, 2008, 07:17:31 AM How about making some CF exhausts shaped like the stock S*R cans?
Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: uclabiker06 on August 18, 2008, 11:57:37 AM Very impressive!
Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: ducducgooseme on August 18, 2008, 12:51:11 PM can wait for the airbox! Great stuff

Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: The Don on August 18, 2008, 02:54:18 PM Will the CF airbox fit a 2004 1000S ie ?

Keep up the good work man- we're waiting with baited breath. [drink] Title: Re: Bored...carbon stuff part 2 Post by: hypurone on August 19, 2008, 05:02:19 AM Got the airbox from him, once I recieve it I'll start the mold/plug process. Damn! You don't mess around, You Da Man! [clap] |
