Title: Beards...& other facial growth.
Post by: Super T.I.B on August 15, 2008, 07:34:43 PM
My Buck's (Bachelor) night/weekend is coming up at the end of this month and all my mates decided that all who attend have to grow a moustache.
I am in the process of growing mine but not just growing a moustache, i am doing the goatee thing and will shave off the goat and keep the moustache for the weekend.

It is irritating the F*CK out of me!

Everytime I pass my hand over my top lip, I get the spike of a whisker into my skin. It's itchy as hell! It creates zits. I have a spot of grey on the left of my chin.  >:(

I f*cken hate it, I want it off NOW!  [bang] [bang] [bang]

I don't know how men (and some women  ;)  [laugh] ) can live with a beard. And the food that gets caught in it that has probably been there for a couple of hours that my workmates don't let me know about.  >:(

<Rant off NOW>

you would love a full on 8 month (or longer) beard
it stops itching, mostly
you start to count on the left over food for a late morning snack
and if you are greying, (as i am) it looks better when it gets longer

You get used to it. I've had facial hair for 20 years now. The first 7 a full beard, the last 13 years a Van Dyke (what everyone and their brother mistakenly calls a goatee)

I let mine grow for about 10 days last summer..before and during my drive from FL to WA.  Arghh..the grey on my face really has filled in quite a bit!!   :-\  The leftover food particles too was a PITA.   [roll]  Plus, I have allergies.  Everytime I had to blow my nose, pieces of tissue stayed in my mustache. Facial hair and I don't get a long!!  I feel your pain TIB.

my wife loves it when I grow out my whiskers but it makes me look 20 years older 'cause it's now 50% grey.  NFW man- I got years left to live and don't need the daily reminder that mortality takes a step toward my door with every breath I take.  Down with the fuzz!

Went with Van Dyke style for a summer, knowbody recognized me.  Good times!

+1 on the conditioner it helps soften it up.

Oh yeah, chicks dig the tickling sensation... [thumbsup]

Some people I work with put me up to growing one earlier this summer.

I have extremely curly facial hair, so believe me, I can sympathize with the itchiness.

Oh and the best part about having a mustache is looking like a child-molester.

No, but I felt a compelling urge to buy one while I had the 'stache.

And I also felt like I could get away with making comments to females that I would normally deem inappropriate.

I've been wearing a "Circle Beard" (a proper Van Dyke does not connect the moustache to the goatee... the circle beard does) for around 4 years now.  I keep it trimmed to a pretty short hair length.  My female friends who normally don't like facial hair have told me mine looks good, and they still hang out with me, so it can't be that bad.  ;)

I've sported a van dyke for 3 years now and it's not going anywhere.  But I never had a problem with itchiness or anything getting stuck in it.

i don't know what to call mine, but i've been growing it for about 3 years. i trim doen the sides and shave the neck but let the goatee area grow. i've had to trim it a few times because it got too long, and because of fire. the itching goes away after a while and when it gets longer(maybe 1/2") it is softer. as others have said use conditioner and it's better. i have actually started using my g/f's leave in conditioner and it's a lot more manageable when when i don't.

Oh jeebus, all you guys who can't grow facial hair...

I shave every morning (around 7).  My hair color is on the dark side, so even after I shave you can see where the beard grows.  Then if I'm going to a nice event in the evening I really have to shave again, because by 5 or 6pm my face feels like 180-220 grit sandpaper.

I could shave off my circle beard/goatee/van dyck at the beginning of a 4 day holiday weekend, and have grown it back enough before the next workday that nobody would know the difference.  That's actually how I got it in the first place... went camping, neglected to shave for 4 or 5 days, then the next time I shaved I just left the circle beard. (http://www.msnemotions.org/emoticons/forum/beard.gif)  That was about 5 years ago, had it ever since.  I have to trim it for length weekly, because it gets kinda scruffy lookin' otherwise.

Where's the neckbeard?

i guess neckbeard is my term for it.  on that pic its called a "chin curtain."  i wish i could grow a full thick beard sometimes, but it just doesnt grow in right.  the wife said i can have it if it grows in full instead of patchy.  she also told me that if i used a "real" razor it will grow faster, but with my luck im just gonna stay with the electric.

if this thread is still around in a couple weeks ill take a pic to show what  a "neck beard" looks like.  its been about one week since i last shaved and its showing, but ill let it get nice and... whatever the hell it gets,  and take the pic then.

The world beard site is great.

The pride of Olympia, Washington, the Great Burke Kenny (also known as Burke Kenny the Great) took top honors in the full beard, styled moustache category at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Brighton, England, on September 1, 2007. This was Burke's second WBMC. At the 2005 worlds in Berlin, Burke finished fifth in the same category.
A former pizza delivery professional, Burke is pursuing his studies at Evergreen College.
He is a regular at the High Sierra and Joyce Daze beard contests.

I think I would freak out if that dude delivered a pizza to my door!

As for facial hair, I have had some form of it for 7 years (I shaved it 1 time in college, and I hated it).  I think I have decided that I am a beard person and I dont think I ever plan to get rid of it.

What do you need to do to be a pizza boy pro? 4 years at Uni?

Anyway Derby, I do have the goatee, according to the chart.  ;)

And after putting some conditioner in it, it was a bit softer but I still look 20 years older with the beard.

And it still spikes my lip, which makes me want to kick a brick wall in.  [bang]

Now I think I'm coming down with a cold, moustaches and boogers don't mix.

I did try and grow a full beard once and it made me look like the love child of Osama. It was all over the place, I can say I will never grow a full beard.

Some of the beards on here are shockers!  :o :o Zarn, good to see you got rid of that neck nest. Reminded me of Peter Griffins' beard with the bird nesting in it.  [laugh]

Peer group pressure? Nah, just boys being boys. <idiots>  [thumbsup]

i'm not actually trying to get it to split. it does that natrually. it also doesn't help that my helmet kinda rubs down the chin hair that would fill that out.

i think what i'm going for is best described as the van dyke (only much longer) in BP's handy visual aid.

I can grow a full on, but it is red and the hair on my head is blonde, so it doesn't look quite "right".  I do keep it at a stubble rather than shave though.  It's easier and shaving often pisses my face of something fierce.
