Title: The Emporers New Clothes (or the bikes new mods)
Post by: Punx Clever on August 18, 2008, 08:09:33 AM
So, as I posted in the Ouray thread... my bike is a little beat up.  Heres the plan! (and pictures of the damage to follow as soon as I find a camera...)

Damage
1) Clutch: drum is wasted. 5 of six posts are sheared.  Clutch cover is wasted as well.  Gonna put it on the wall. Everything else looks fine.
2) Right rearset: foot peg was sheared off.  Knob on brake lever was sheared off. right passenger peg is bent a little bit
3) Exhaust: Heat sheild is scratch.  Mount is bent... kinda.
4) Bars: handlebars are bent. throttle tube is wasted.  bar end.  ignition switch (just the little post that keeps it in one place). break lever
5) Windscreen:  painted area is scratched up bad.  clear part is fine
6) seat cowel: minor scratchign right above the exhaust
7) tank: lots of scratches... no decals torn up though
8) Front wheel: scratched

and most importantly: turn the key on and the check engien light comes on.  try to make it turn over, lights just dim.  Any thoughts? it's gonna go down to the dealer in Indy here soona nd they can just hook the computer up to it, but I'm curious now.

Fixes:
1) Clutch: seems like going to a slipper clutch is gonna be around the same price as a regular one.  How do the 1098s guys like thiers?
2) Does anyone have a foot peg and break lever from some stock s2r rearsets they arent using?  if not, I'm gonna buy aftermarket pieces.  Dealer wants too much for a new brake lever.
3) Good excuse for a full exhaust system.. or at least some slip ons.  I liked the arrows... or the quat-d x-box
4) simple replacement parts... any particular bars that anyone would suggest?  I DON'T want clipons.  I do too much long distance stuff on the bike
5) Windscreen is off the bike for now pending paint schemes
6) Same as above
7) tank is still fine.  Just need to figure out paint
8) not gonna worry about the wheel.

So, paint suggestions are in order... I'm feeling 1950's corvette... but open to ideas.  The good thing is the only parts that were effed (aside from the bike not starting) are things that I wanted to upgrade anyways.

Pictures soon, suggestions now!

Glad you are ok...  did you check your frame yet?  check the steering stops for dents or bends...that will total the bike.  Insured?

with the exhaust, i would check out the Zard system and the Spark (like on mine) if you want side by side...but if you want the shotgun, stick with Arrow.

If your ignition module is damaged at all check the immobilizer coil inside the plastic trim ring. The copper wire that runs through it is ultra fine and can break easily.

thats a good idea with teh immobilizer.

As far as insured... I just have basic basic insurance.  So steering stops don't matter too much, even though the left one is bent a litte.

I had that happen to mine. I though just the outter housing was broke, turned out to have a hair line break in the coil. If you need parts, and don't mind them being used get ahold of Chris Sarceni at Motored-Sports. You can find him in the parts for sale section. I got all my parts from him, he worked some good deals with me and kept my rebuild cheap.

Just looked at the coil... the platic piece that the coil is in was cracked... so I tried to pull the whole thing out, and it broke in other places so now I definately need one.  But, good news is that it was doing the same thing it was before without the coil.  I think that might be it!

And, I just found him before looking at this.  Saw that you got your frame from him.

Hey, thanks for the heads up man.  He quoted me at 1000 for everything I needed.

Well, I'm still waiting on parts from Motored Sports... Chris is REALLY dropping the ball on this one.  He is supposed to have shipped them on Friday... if not I'm gonna have to cancel with him and just buy the parts from the duc dealer up here.

BUT, on a much more fun and happy note... I FIXED THE BIKE ENOUGH TO RIDE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6 hours in the machine shop here at school and my clutch drum works again (it is temporary... dont trust it to last for ever), and pretty much everything else works ok.  Turns out that the triples just got tweaked, and the handlebars arent bent.  Front brake lever still works, but it's not pretty.

Now, to find/make a foot peg and end for the rear brake lever and buy some new grips!
