I had to get rid of my router and connect DSL direct to PC to get online. Was trying to swap from a wire router, to wireless and somehow fubar'd my pc.
I tried system restore and that did nothing.
Any advice? Keep in mind im really computer illiterate. If it isn't made of metal it just doesn't jive with me.
I got through the whole setup and it looked like things were connected, but no net would load up. I tried ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew at the cmd promt, but that did nothing either.
Even that's above my level, but I read about it so I gave it a shot [laugh]
Seriously, help.
The reason I like these is that it is so easy to attach auxillary bases to them. And the center of the chuck is as close to the center of the supplied base as any router I've used. They last a damn long time as well.

This is really difficult to talk about Online. Did you name a work group on your machine & the router? If you set WEP to be on, do the Machine & the router have the same bit encryption? You should start with making sure that you are part of the same work group (Your router & PC or MAC) with WEP & MAC address filtering turned off first. Just start with the basics first.
This is a bit big for some hand-held work, but it's great for stationary use in a table. (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3208/2775788883_705b976663.jpg)

I've never liked the Porter Cable ("Cable" sounds computery so this is in no way a threadjack) plunge routers. The plunge action always seemed sticky to me. And anything that is handle held that has 3 make the beast with two backsing horses spinning in it scares the bejesus out of me ever since I saw a dude rip his wrists to shreads when the very router you posted hung up on him. And that, kids is why you don't try to hog a 1/4" of solid maple in pass. The end.

I can't even tell you how much time I'd have to spend on Google to fully comprehend what you just asked me. Also, I have a feeling that while googleing certain works like "bit encryption" that their definition will contain works that, again, Ill have to google to understand.
All I know is I have a PC with DSL. Then, I wanted XBOX live, so I bought the cheapest DYNEX wired router I could find, plugged it all in and everything worked correctly. I didn't do anything at all with WEP, bit encryption, work groups or address filtering.
Im afraid now :-\
You didn't have to worry about WEP since that is just for security of a wireless signal...
i found that if the router wasnt placed just right, i wasnt having any luck.
have you tried one of these?

;D
Yes, but now my fingers hurt.
Mine doesn't have that yellow plastic thing in the middle. Not sure what that's all about.
something about different collet sizes. i find that the biggest one works fine for all the smaller ones.
doesnt reduce band width either...
ML are you near Seattle by chance? Your profile doesn't say.
NW PA
So no ;D
My advice is... turn it off, turn it back on. or you can go to Californee, get you some internets there.
Don't bother with encryption unless you live right on top of your neighbors, like an apartment or something. If you don't mess with that stuff it should just be a plug and play. Or call geek squad or some service like that. Mostly because MendoDave's post made my brain hurt a bit and it isn't even my problem.
It may be your computer is still looking for the network connection it established with the router, and thus doesn't understand that there is a direct connection to the internet.
Unfortunately, Windows makes it difficult to figure out if it's the computer's settings, the browser's settings or what. Sometimes fun stuff like firewalls and spyware protectors gum up the works.
You generally have to play with various settings in a trial-and-error format to figure out where the glitch is in the system.

I'm so sorry, but this is HIGH-LAIR-IOUS! [laugh] [laugh]
Just to start off with something simple: If you get rid of the router and plug the DSL directly into the network card of your computer, do you get the intarweb back?
Also, even if you've switched from a hub (wire) to a wireless router, are you still plugging in your computer into the internet via the router via an ethernet cable? or are you using the wireless?
any luck ML?
it's not you, lot's of people can't figure it out...
my sister-in-law's father tried hooking up wireless router in their house,
he worked at it for 4 days...
he never figured it out, gave up and threw it away [laugh]
Dont feel bad. My first router took me a couple of months to get the whole office to work on the router. But eventually I figured it out with some help from a friend and once you learn something its not that hard.
Your router should be broadcasting a name like Linksys or something. when you turn on your computer it should recognize that there is a wireless router nearby. If it doesnt then your computers wireless connection may be turned off. Its easy to turn it on though. On a PC go to start - My network places - and look for the wireless connection Icon. It should say if its connected or not. If Not right click on the Icon and select Enable. If things arent screwed up the PC should then be able to "see" all wireless connections in range and show them to you in the lower right hand corner of the screen Via one of those balloons that pop up. if it does that select the connection that you think is yours and connect to it.
That's about the best I can do from here.
i have the instructions for that router table somewhere around here...
I used to have a router table, made some nice molding with it. [thumbsup]

Reread my post. I ditched the router and put the DSL right to my PC and im online. Before, with the wired router, the net came from the DSL --> Router ---> PC and xbox. All was well.
The first thing I tried was simply switching in the wireless router (which will still feed my xbox and PC with the same cables they use now, the wireless is for a work laptop that sometimes comes home)
That didn't work, no internet.
Let me clarify: The wireless router also will provide internet with a wired connection. This is what Im trying to make work.
I need my pc and xbox to plug into this new wireless router and be able to access the internet. Once that works, Ill try and make my laptop connect wirelessly.
But, I have to have working internet with my PC first.
:)
gonna sleep on it.
have the answer in the morning.

You should be able to plug right in and it will work.
What winblows version are you using?
XP

Go to My Network Places/Network connections and make sure your not trying to connect wirelessly when plugged in to the router or some foolishness.
Unless the router is defective it's a straight through deal.

Sorry about that misinterpretation on my part. I wasn't sure in what order you had done things. It sort of sounded like everything was foobarred and nothing was working....
Anyway, let me ask you this... what brand is your new wireless router?
Can you connect to the wireless router through a web browser? I'm not talking about the internet, I'm talking about your
intranet.... In other words, you should be able to connect to your router without any of the packets (read: magic information going through the intarweb tooobes... hrmm, sorry, I'm channeling Senator Stevens) leaving your house through the DSL. For me, I have a Netgear and I type, "routerlogin.com" into any web browser and I get access to my router. This is the reason why I asked for the router brand. Try typing in 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 into a web browser. <-- works most of the time.
If you can connect to your router, then that's good. It just means we have to figure out what parameter to change to get it working (or possibly windows is being stupid...)
Sorry for the double post.
Ponder this one: DSL used static ip addresses. Not sure if they do anymore (thought they are DHCP, which just means everything is automatic). Do you happen to know if you use a static ip?
To find out: Start -> My Network Places -> View Network Connections (it's on the left hand panel) -> (right-click) Local Area Connection and choose "Properties" -> Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and hit the Properties button.
Is the radio button of "Obtain IP Addresses Automatically" selected? Or is the static ip address information filled out?
Im following, loosely. It's set to obtain IP automatically.
Also, I can connect by going to 192.168.2.1
:D
