Title: drilling handlebars
Post by: MARRAHM on August 23, 2008, 02:22:26 PM
I'm sure everyone but me has already figured this out, but just in case.... If you're going to move any of the controls on your bars, you need to relocate the pin holes.  Drilling a new hole in the round, chromed bars is a challenge that was not made easier by a punch, nail or anything else I tried to make a drill-start mark.  finally tried a couple passes of a rat tail file in the spot I wanted to drill and it worked perfectly.  took off just enough chrome for the bit to bite and no wandering or weird shaped holes.

or you could just file down the nubs on the controls a bit so you do not have to drill the hole. This works fine. They do not move when installed. If you wanted to you could put a thin piece of rubber underneath the controls to prevent slippage.

Someone suggested cutting a band out of the finger of a latex glove, slipping it over the bar and  clamping onto it.

After cutting off the nubs to fit some Renthal Fat Bars, I have no problem with the levers and the right hand switch, but the left hand switch will not tighten down to prevent it rotating when I operate the fast idle lever. Planning to fix that with a finger from a black glove.
