Title: Black Gold Struck in Socal!
Post by: S2daRk on August 23, 2008, 05:39:41 PM
Some of you saw my original thread: http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=3104.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=3104.0)

Well, I got my bike back together and I'm finally back on the road! What should have been a simple project, turned out to become more than I originally planned. When I started to take my bike apart, the plan was to black it out by getting some parts powdercoated; however, the project evolved into much more...

First some before pics:

After: Black Gold!

I wanted to do something a little different with the swingarm. Instead of powdercoating it, I decided to polish and anodize it to match the deep gold color of my CRG levers. The polishing was a ton of work, but after getting it back from the anodizer, I realized it was worth it. To keep the swingarm from getting nicked, I went with a Shift-Tech carbon hugger.
While I had the swingarm off, it was a perfect time to upgrade the Sachs shock. An Ohlins gold shock was the obvious choice to keep with the theme, but I found a great deal on an S4R Showa adjustable shock, I decided to use the $$$ I saved to buy some other bling - like the gold sprocket nuts, Sato rearsets, and the Rizoma billet CF sprocket cover.

Since I upgraded the rear suspension, I needed to upgrade the front as well. I sent the Marzocchis to Jason at Dept. of Suspension and he installed the Matris cartridge kit and anodized the fork tubes while he was at it. I think the fork and swingarm really balance each other out. The stock silver tank decals no longer matched, so a heat gun to remove them and some ol' skool gold decals in their place.

Now that the bike is pretty much blacked out, the stainless pipes on the Zards seem out of place. I'm thinking ceramic coating this winter. I also have a pair of 4-pad calipers and 320mm rotors to install, but I didn't feel like waiting for new brake lines, so they too will have to wait for this winter.

The windscreen helps when riding on the freeway, but I like the look without it; I guess I'll ride it this way for a bit. I like the barend mirrors the best when the windscreen is removed, so CRG LS it is. DP billet signals replace the bulky stockers and a DP diversion fender wraps the front tire. When I reinstalled the triples, I took the opportunity to upgrade to tapered bearings.

All in all, I'm really happy the way it turned out. Although it took much longer than I would have liked, at least I can say I did most of the work myself. Now that I have the confidence, I'm going to tackle the 6k valve adjustment pretty soon!

What was the cost on the Matris upgrade on the front fork ???  Not the anno, just the cartridges.

Very well done.  [thumbsup]

I like the fact that you linked it all together with a theme rather than just throwing parts at it. It's the little things that make all the difference like the gold sprocket nuts and bolts for the rearsets.

How about some custom made gold brake lines?  ;)

Also, what if you anodized the endcaps on the exhaust gold while it's apart getting ceramic coated? Now that would be SICK!!!

Thanks! For the brake lines, I think I'm going to go with black lines with gold fittings. Yeah, I definitely want to do something with the Zard endcaps. I'd like to get it anodized black with the triangular cutouts gold. I don't know how to remove the endcaps tho...they seem to be permanently riveted to the cans. I would probably have to drill out the rivets.

Nice choice in the colors!!  ;D  The swingarm stands out nicely.

I used galfer black lines with gold ends and bolts:  www.galferusa.com/html/new_lines.html

Brembo radial master cyl with large Rizoma reservoir.  Small reservoir on the clutch radial master.

S2daRK, how do you find the Showa adjustable rear shock over the stock Sachs?  Was it worth the effort and $$s?

I'm very happy with the Showa. If you can relocate the ignition coil yourself and find a used shock, I think it's the best bang for the buck shock upgrade for the S2R800. Match it with some adjustable forks up front, tune it to your riding style, and you'll have a bike that feels more stable at speed and in the corners.

Actually, I think if you decide to upgrade the suspension on the 800, you should do both the front and rear at the same time. If you decide to upgrade just the rear, you'll find the front is under matched, and vice-versa. The stock Marzocchis were too soft for me, the bike dove too much, even during normal braking - and I don't weigh that much - 160lbs.

It's good to see somebody do something awesome with an S2R800. That bike is schpankity! How did you black out the caliper mounts? And when polishing the swingarm, how did you deal with the super rough portion toward the engine pivot? Does Jason only anodize in gold or does he do other colors? Where did you score those gold sprocket cover bolts? The bike raises so many questions! You done good. Would love to see it again when you get the brake upgrades and the exhaust coated.

what's the cost of anodizing the swing-arm?

Title: Re: Black Gold Struck in Socal!
Post by: S2daRk on July 20, 2009, 08:33:57 PM
Thanks guys! I painted the fork bottoms with satin black engine enamel. Jason said it wasn't worth the effort to disassemble for powdercoating. I just made sure to prep it real good and it's holding up really well. While my forks were apart, Jason had them anodized by someone else. I'm pretty sure other colors are possible; give him a call. The rear sprocket bolts are from Lockhart Phillips. I didn't find an easy way to polish the swingarm; just a TON of hours blood and sweat.

I had a bunch of parts powdercoated/anodized at the same time to save money. Shops usually have a minimum for each lot.

...it's a coincidence this thread was revived because I was recently involved in a car accident (rear ended by a drunk driver). I fractured my wrist and I'm currently in physical therapy. Since I can't ride right now, what better time to do some mods. I'm taking apart the exhaust and will send the pipes to get ceramic coated. 4-pad calipers, radial masters, HID headlight, and new gauges are also on the agenda. I'll post pics as I complete each item.

Didn't know what color you were planning on for the pipes, but remember Jet-Hot can do gold ceramic. 999 integrated radial masters w/ shorty Pazzos?[bacon] And a quickchange sprocket carrier with those tab-keeper thingies to prevent a stray cush drive from backing out and ruining that nice gold ano'd swinger!

D0od you'll need BST wheels when you're done. Just can't stop lovin' your bike. It's my new desktop background.

Should be able to get the exhaust installed this weekend. I decided to use stainless steel rivets (like the original rivets) to reassemble the cans...those SS rivets are tough! I couldn't get my rinky-dink rivet gun to pop a single rivet [bang] However this arrived at my doorstep yesterday and it makes short work of those rivets. It pays to have the right tools for the job!

Got the Zards back on this past weekend. It really blacks out the bike especially on the right side. I had the pipes ceramic coated satin black and painted the rivets black too. The endcaps and straps are anodized gold. The original straps were stainless steel so I measured them and drew them up using a free CAD program. A local shop easily cut them out of aluminum sheet using a water jet.

On the list this weekend: paint the oil cooler with black radiator paint and temporarily mount a CF long belly pan to see if I like it. I also have a magnesium 10-spoke rear wheel that I need to have mounted and balanced, so if anyone knows of a good shop (preferably with No-Mar changer) in San Diego please let me know!

I would have to agree with captainblood on that one.

Hey S2dark, how about rerouting that right-side oil cooler hose over to the other side.  It's an easy mod that really cleans up the look of the bike.
Oh, and by the way Looks like your bikes dingaling is showing.  :o

Never crossed my mind. As the captain pointed out, my theme is a black bike w/ gold accents. And I don't want to get every accessory that comes in gold either. The only gold pieces I have left to install is a Motogadget gauge w/ gold trim ring, AEM hub flange, and S4RS Ohlins shock. I have a lot of black parts to install (shock spring, front rotors, 4 pad calipers, radial masters, brake lines, billet axle nuts, STM slave, STM sprocket and carrier, Speedymoto bottom triple, Marchesini 10-spoke mag rear wheel). I wish the entire engine was black!

Mojo, the long belly pan should help keep it from dangling in the wind ;D The routing of the right oil cooler hose is going to come too; want to use black lines and fittings.
