Title: Labor Day Weekend Ride--Sunday 8/31 MEET AT MOTOCORSA AT 8:00
Post by: SaltLick on August 23, 2008, 11:47:36 PM
For those that dont want to scan through all this trying to figure out what the plan is:

Meet us for pancakes at 7am, or meet us at motocorsa around 8:15am on Sunday 8/31. The pancake place's address is somewhere in this thread, and the route we are going is also somewhere in this thread......

There are some new riders going as well it looks like, so dont be afraid of being the only new guy to show up. Come have some fun.

*******************************************************************************************************************************

Okay you Sally's, no excuses this time (me included) lets get a gaggle of people together for this one if we can.  Lets start some discussion on what day is best and where to go.  Sunday or Monday is fine with me im off both days. Weather looks good.  I aint plannin the route cause i dont know any good routes, ill leave that to someone else. And just cause im posting this dont mean im the leader, cause anyone thats ridden with me knows I aint the fastest one in the bunch. I will show up though i swear....

So far ive heard three people that want to go....jbubble, johnny, and bible boy. I know theres some more....maybe we could end it at the brewery on powell for some food?? Start throwing out some ideas folks....

Mt Hood Fruit Loop?  I don't know the whole route but can find it - where's that book.  It's not the traditional Mt Hood loop that most people do . . .

Oh, and if we want BB to come we either need to start early enough where I can hold mass before we go on Sunday OR it needs to be Monday.  But then do we lose JB?  If it's a choice between the 2 who do we pick?  Shall we flip a coin?

If it comes down to a vote JB has a 2 point lead . . . she has (*)(*)  ;D

You're damn skippy Chuckles!! The boobies def. give me extra points. And the tight jeans.  [thumbsup]

Like I said, I'd love to go. I'd just need to borrow a bike (I might could borrow J's but I need to ask first) and I'd need to borrow a helmet. I think I can stuff my boots and jacket into my luggage somehow.

With his work schedule, I really doubt he'll be up for a day run but I'm good for Sunday or Monday.

ahhh ha ha ha ha !!  thats funny chuck.

What ive noticed is on the rides when theres newbies, they never leave anyone behind....either theres a tail person that stays behind everyone or they wait at the stop signs for ya.  Im slower than the others i have ridden with, not much slower i usually arrive a minute or two behind everyone else, last ride i kept up with everyone the whole time til the very end when i got stuck behind a few cars. So no worries, you wont be holding anyone back.

Gotta love sweep riders!!  Well if I get my bike back in time I'm so in!!  Be nice to meet you all for one big group ride... um, so I can forget all your names over the winter.  LOL  Can't say I've done a lot of distance riding, especially on the Duc.  So depending on the route not sure if I'll make the whole one, but definitely will give it the ol 1, 2!

I would be interested in doing a group ride but i am a super newbie.  I have only had my bike since February and have only put on like 2000 miles so far.  I have never done a group ride so people would have to explain all the ins and outs and what not.  My vote would be for earlier Sunday or afternoon on Monday that's my vote.

Here's an idea:

Let's get an early start, and I don't mean the usual 10:00 am or 11:00 AM.  To me it seems that the mid-day traffic just starts to build up just as we're starting to roll.

Here is a crazy idea:  let's roll about 8:00 AM.  Heck, Dad used to get us up earlier than that to go fishin', right?

The benefit will be wide open vistas on the road with token traffic, and for once we get to the lunch time stop early, ahead of the crowds.

And here is the awesomest part:  meet for blueberry pancakes and [bacon]!! at 7:00 AM, fuel ourselves, then roll at 8:00 AM.

This is gonna be a big event, so let's do it up right, right?  [thumbsup]  Blueberry pancakes = Elmers at Stark and I-205.

My $.02.

JohnnyD

Hell yah!  The day's half over by 10AM!!!

I'm game for an early start and a man's breakfast to get us off . . . errrrrr . . . started.

J bubble, since I can't ride right now, my gear needs to get used. I have an XS HJC helmet (that is still too big for me anyway...) and a Dainese jacket that is probably a small-medium. It's more of a fashion jacket so it's cut really short at the hips and doesn't zip into anything, but it's got armour and has survived one crash already with little more than some dirt streaks and a small hole in the elbow. I also have Sidi boots you can borrow if you can fit into them. (I'm a size 6.5)

Let me know if you wanna borrow any of that stuff, and you can also borrow the Ninja too but it doesn't have insurance on it at the moment, so you'd wanna make sure your insurance covers you on another bike.

Good idea, and a good plan for a ride.  Hey were going to have two girls on the ride...this should be awesome!

So anyone who is reading this....if you dont want to meet for pancakes meet us at motocorsa around 8:15am. Dont leave if were not there, hang out a while we usually get to motocorsa and wait about 15-20 minutes before leaving.

We're heading west, and there's probably some westsiders that don't want to ride to 205 and then head back west.  I'm not planning a long stop at MotoCorsa, just roll in and gather up any folks who are waiting.   [thumbsup]

I really appreciate the offer, thank you so much.  :-*

I second a possible buttocks revolt, and 2 out of 4 of the others, but you get the idea.. LOL  I've done the Apiary Loop etc, and not too bad, and that WAS on the SR.  So you should be able to hang JD! :)

We took this ride once, well close to it we went to Rainier, then once we hit 30 two of us went back on 30 all the way home.

The ride there takes about 2hrs from motocorsa going Victors route. Now thats without stopping for gas, or any troubles. Ill have to stop a few times cause of my clipons, and my oldness. So im figuring 2.5hrs there, and its only one hour back if you take I-5 the whole way, which i plan on doing cause after 3.5 hrs on my bike the way i got it setup thats about all i can do until i get some rearsets or some risers.

If you think about it that way, we could be at the observatory by 11:00am at the latest if we left at 8:15,  stop for gas in Vernonia and stopped a few times to wait for people or what not. Heck you could be home by 1:00pm thats with hanging out at the observatory for an hour.....  [bacon]

I think I can join as well. I have a family dinner on Sunday... but I think I may be able to sneak a fun ride in.  ;D  I like the idea of starting early. As to the length of the ride... the seat on my bike is like a half an inch thick... if I can make it without complaints... you all can make it better.

Now that I live in the boonies, is 150 miles.

So 38 mpg

750 Carby.

The light used to come on between 140 and 150 (Supersport tank is like 4.1 or 4.2 gallons, can't recall the reserve capacity).  Now the fuel light don't work anymore.  :'(  Found that out when I pushed it to 170 miles, figured I'd better get gas before it died on the side of the road... it took almost exactly 4 gallons.  After that, I just don't bother with the fuel light, and fill it when I hit 140 miles.

I average 44-45 mpg with the typical mix of city/freeway riding I do.  This last Cougar Run, though, I averaged 49.5 mpg over the course of 220 miles (round trip starting and ending in Wilsonville).  And that's with a 900!

I'm in the same boat as Ryan, around 90 miles and my gas light is on. Doesn't seem to matter if I flog the hell out of it or go easy on her. My S4RS was the same way. Damn thirsty Ducs anyway....

I get 40 a gallon if I cruise legal and straight. Anything else will pop the gas light at 115 miles in from full on my carb'd nine hundy.

We may not be in town this weekend (racing up at WMRRA this weekend), if you need to borrow a helmet, let me know what size, and we can leave one out.

We should be back Sunday afternoon sometime.

<shakes head>

Dude...

It's not about the actual Sunday service/sermon.  That's merely a manmade tradition.  Christianity ("Reformed Evangelical") is a lifestyle, not a program (read: tradition-heavy religion).  The point of going to church is to participate in worship with other believers.  Receiving a canned "sermon" from a random "ordained minister" is pointless.

I don't mean to be harsh, that's just reality.  :-\

And as an aside (which I'm sure most of you are aware of anyway), I am a fallible human being, so I'm not always representing my faith very well.

Okay, end of threadjack... feel free carry on with ride-related discussion.  If'n we wants to discuss faith/religion/etc later, we can do so offline, where my hands aren't tied by board rules.  ;)

Arun invited me to their Sunday morning rides... told him I'd love to go, but I'm at church on Sunday mornings.  He said he understood, and that he was "at his own church."

I get that though. Sometimes when you are totally in the moment and in your own world you experience a joy that you don't get on a day to day basis. A lot of people feel a spiritual connection with whatever deity they may believe in when they are out of body like that.

Oh, well.

Looks like Elmer's should wait for another day.   :'(

The early discussion was around doing the Cougar run, and Elmer's is on the way east.  That changed, of course.  We're headed west.

So, it doesn't make sense to go east to Elmer's then back-track to MotoCorsa.

See you hooligans at the meet-up at Motocorsa between 8:00 to 8:15 on Sunday.

Umm... I was just looking at those directions.  Those go to Silver Lake, which is about 40-45 miles shy of the observatory.  The observatory is around 5 miles from the St. Helens crater.  Soooo.... it's ~135 miles in to the observatory.  Updated map here (satellite view):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=2170+NW+Wilson+Street,+Portland,+or&daddr=45.717686,-122.875214+to:Apiary+Rd+%4045.948916,+-123.113504+to:NF-5049%2FSpirit+Lake+Memorial+Hwy+%4046.277269,+-122.216961&hl=en&geocode=%3B%3B644217241490824916,45.948916,-123.113504%3B9203526173261272463,46.277269,-122.216961&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1,2&sll=45.855586,-122.736511&sspn=0.761338,0.862427&ie=UTF8&ll=46.230678,-122.235947&spn=0.189047,0.215607&t=h&z=12

Here's the observatory website:
http://www.gonorthwest.com/washington/cascades/mt_st_helens/johnstonridge.htm

Note the mailing address... that's what ends at Silver Lake in the first set of Google Map directions.  That's just the mailbox, though.  The observatory lookout is quite a ways further.

So, y'all up for a ride that's roughly 135 miles each way?   [evil]  This last Cougar Run was 220 miles round trip for me, including to/from my apartment in Wilsonville.  This trip would be 270 miles round-trip from MotoCorsa... plus 18 miles each way between my place and there... That's a long day, but doable with enough stops to rest the derriere and wrists.  I'm still thinkin' about it.  My family isn't gonna be at church, because they need to run up to Burlington to pick up the closest new (leftover) 2007 CBR600RR (in all-black) to replace Tom's busted-up one.  I'm debating between goin' to church myself, goin' with you guys, or going to pick up a new bike with them.

Dam i didnt know that. Im going to head back when we hit I-5 N going towards the observatory. I can probably handle up to a 4 hr ride tops and thats being back in beaverton after 4hrs with my clips ons. I really dig them but they are not meant for that long of a ride since they are mounted below the triple tree with no risers. It bunches my knees up and i got a bad knee. I thought the observatory was like a  15 min drive once you hit I-5 North. Oh well.  At that point when you guys hit 1-5 North i will head back on 30 through St. helens then back home on Cornelius pass road. It will still be fun.

I dont ride for that long usually, so i like them for what i do (frequent 2hr rides) my left knee cap is all busted up from a previous accident involving my knee cap coming completely off..you dont want to know believe me....so ive never been able to take more than a 3-4hr ride on any sport bike and thats with a stop every hour to stretch it out.  That is why ive been skipping the Cougar run, and anything else i think will involve me being on a bike longer than 3 hrs. With my knee i should be riding something with forward controls but dam if im getting a harley  :P  Anyways, so the clip-ons dont really hinder me from taking longer rides since i wouldnt take them anyways. I know i can handle this ride, but i think the extra 110 miles round trip to the observatory would do me in.  No problems though, hell it will be fun ill be hangin in there for many hrs so its all good.  No regrets here from these clip ons Billy, i love em! The pain is worth the fun.

One thing to note Pat... if you Google MotoCorsa, they have two locations.  One on NW Wilson Street, the other on SW Canyon Rd.  We meet at 2170 NW Wilson Street, which is on the north end of Downtown, near the west end of the Freemont Bridge (I-405).

 [thumbsup]

Oh hey Salty...

If'n you just wanted to ride the first fun portion then come back down 30, you're lookin' at a 106mi round trip back to the intersection of Cornelius Pass Rd and Hwy 26:

If you go back Cornelius Pass Rd, I have no idea how far it is back to your place, so you can use that link and modify the destination accordingly.  But yeah, that also looks like a decent ride.  [thumbsup]

I've had a few bad experiences on group rides, but after reading the replies to a topic I posted on the subject, I've come to the realization that it probably had to do with the people I was riding with. Which is better than the alternative: that I'm some anti-social, Anthropophobic, shut-in like sacduc. So this will give me a chance to to find out, was it them or is it me. I'll be in the 8:15 @ MC group. I do have a question: there's a plan for breakfast before, but is there a plan for lunch and/or booze for after?

That makes the list so far:
JohnnyDucati
Krolik
SaltLick
Neikos
JBubble
SR1K_Femme (AKA Nikita)
ryandalling
phlipmode
jb78
Morganf
Tailgunner
patricks2r
cloud2blue (lucky #13)

And in closing: an important lesson in the difference between ninjas and crazy people.

I think we nixed the idea for breakfast - too early, too far and too many peeps to coordinate breakfast.

I am going to stop for coffee at NW23rd and Kearny (Mio Gelato) just before the 8:15 AM meetup - I gotta have my java shooter.  That is not far from Motocorsa & anyone's welcome, the more the merryer.

Oh, yeah - we must stop for lunch somewhere.  I have a chronic condition that requires me to eat regularly:  i get hungry.

It got in the way of our two dogs fighting,  I received about 9 deep puncture wounds and a quality chunk torn out of my right index finger.  My right hand is currently bandaged up, and is quite black and blue.  The pain killers I'm on pretty much prevent me from doing anything fun, 'cept for being on pain killers.

. .  .I am going to stop for coffee at NW23rd and Kearny (Mio Gelato) just before the 8:15 AM meetup - I gotta have my java shooter.  That is not far from Motocorsa & anyone's welcome, the more the merryer.

They serve chai?  I'll meet you there for tea and a biscuit.

What time were you thinking?

I have to collect JBubble in the Clackamas Highlands very early 7:00ish, avoiding the usual hordes of brigandes, buffalo stampedes, highwaymen, armegdonites, survivalists and camel spiders.

Her Bubbleness and I hope to swing by Mio Gelato about 7:45 just in time for me to snort down a triple esspresso  :o before jittering on down the road to MotoArunoCorsa by 8:15.

I got this timed to the minute . . .

First bathroom stop is in Scapoose at the gas station where we fill up, its only about 15 minute drive from motocorsa.

Let's keep it safe tomorrow peeps. Three riders went down in a single wreck on the Estacada to Detroit run, one of them didn't make it. Let's make sure we all ride at our own levels and not try to keep up with that guy in front... Let's relax and have fun... and take over some dive for lunch.  [thumbsup]

I'm not gonna be goin' this time... I'm trying to throw what might be a minor sinus infection, or some kind of nose bug which has turned into a minor cough.  I'd like it to stay "minor" (then go away quickly) and exhausting myself riding all day ain't exactly a brilliant way to remain healthy.

I'll be joining my parents on their road trip to Seattle (well north of) to get Tom's new '07 CBR600RR.  We're prolly gonna stop off and see some touristy stuff on the way back as well.

Y'all have fun, and ride safe!  [thumbsup]

'A' Group made it to the the top of Johnston Ridge Observatory. 'B' group didn't even head into Washington??  It was 40 degrees at the top and then it poured down on me, the last 80 miles back. It was, however, a great ride... a lot of cool new faces. Why did it take us this long to plan a big group ride like this one?? Nice meeting you all.

I think maybe there was some confusion on where we were suppose to regroup and continue.  Some members in B group were cold and decided riding in the rain wasn't going to be that much fun.  All in all i still think it was a good ride even if we didn't all make it up to the observatory.  Did anyone take a head count of how many people made it today?

14 bikes total.  I think Johnny snapped a pic at the gas station. I want to see it.

I was with group B, there was 6 of us. we got tired of getting rained on and we didnt know which way group A went we figured you guys headed towards st.helens. We all wound up at the blue moon for lunch [thumbsup]. Goddam rain.

I went home via St. Helens & 30 through Nw Pdx.  Gloves wet.  Leathers wet.  Socks wet.  Underlayers wet, too.

That was a great ride, despite the rain & cold.

Glad to meet all the new guys and hope to see more of them inthe future.

I vote that we have a getogether session this week at a decently disreputable pub/bar.  We have to have a debrief to go over the details of the ride.

For example:  I have noticed that Ryan's form is atrocious.  His outside elbow is angled one or two inches too far outboard at maximum lean in the turn, and his butt looks fat in those Icon jeans.  Come on, Ryan.  Get it together, will ya?   [roll]

Positive feedback of this nature at the post-ride debrief will make us all better riders in the future.  And the riding critique will become more eloquent with every additional beverage.

 ;D

Hey, sorry I couldn't make the ride, but I still wanted to at least put some name to faces.  I didn't get to everyone, but it was nice to those that I did. :)  The beach run on Sat, really messed up my knees and shoulders, and I sure didn't think I had another 200+ miles in me for today.  But I did ride to an east side coffee shop with dad and it was NOT a Starbucks.. I went very european and decided to go 'independent'.  ;)

Thanks to Johnny D for letting me know he made it, as did the rest of you guys.  I know I froze on my way down there, but I can't imagine the top of a mtn, and pouring ass rain on the way home.  It was crappy enough driving through it in the cage!!

I'll be there for the next ride I promise!  :)

I got 142 miles on my little outting. Good for you guys who went all the way through with the orig plan. I would have hated that in the conditions.

JBubble, post up whenever you want to get away for the Motherless domain you are staying at. I'll meet you along the way and we'll go cause trouble/fun/hooliganism  :) -billy

Thanks to all of you for showing me what a group ride is really supposed to be like. Yeah it was a damp in places and a little chilly at the top and I got fracking soaked in Vancouver, but it was still better than most my past group rides. Great road, no failures, no ambulances, and only a little harassment (spooge in blue Mini needs his tires slashed) Actually, thinking on it, it IS the best group ride I've ever been on.

I would be happy to ride with you characters anytime. Hope the feeling is mutual.

JBubblicious-

If there's a get-together (or even if not), text me and I can be your guide to get you to whatever destination you need.

Instead of me coming out to Estacada to fetch you, if you are comfortable with it, just start driving along the main drag towards Portland, then call me when you get to the 1st McDonald's or Walgreens or 7-11 or supermarket, etc., once you emerge from the wild frontiers.

I will meet you there in just minutes, then from there the world is your oyster.   [thumbsup]
