Title: Need replacement tach ideas
Post by: edgesnyc on August 25, 2008, 03:03:25 PM
I need a replacement tach for my 2000 Monster M900S... Does anyone know about replacement guages as a whole or just how I can replace the tach..? I can swap out both if there is something interesting to replace them with.
I'd be happy to just swap out the tach but for 500 bucks or something like that from Ducati it seems insane.
So, a new gauge cluster (digital or analogue)... or just a new tach to fit in the original cluster... any and all ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Take your pick.  Motogadget is the nicest.  The trailtech vaypor is the cheapest.

isnt 2000 m900 the first year of injection+immbolizers?

No immobilisers in 2000 and 2001, just on the S4 in 2001.

But you are correct, 2000 M900s were the 1st injected Monsters.

Makes me wonder though, were M900s offered in 2002? and did they have immobilisers/ST based frames?

Yes. ST based frame in 02 w/ red key.

Does anyone know if this is an easy install... the Motogadgets one is nice... I am presuming that if I go digital then all the cabeling for the old speedo and other stuff needs to be cleaned up and made to disappear?
I'll take a closer look at them as well.
and the Analogue one just means the face plates would be different if this one was white and the Ducati speedo i have would be grey... Hmmm the cosmetics of it all...  [bang]

and my M900 has the injection but no immobilizers.

I believe on your bike it would be relatively easy. On my 03 it was a nightmare. I emailed you some pics.

hey thanks for the pics... the bike looks great... I think doing the single guage with the clip ons is nice... have to see if that is workable... no one seems to make anything that just slips into the stock housing though... oh well... maybe time for some new mods in that case...  ;D

What's wrong with your tach that you need to replace it?

There's also another company "Koso" that makes nice gauges. I just put a set on  an SV and they're very nice.

Hey,
The two screws that hold the plate in place came out and the unit is sealed so I can't get em back in... and the plate vibrates all over and the needle is not stable anymore... so I need to replace the tach...

The Koso guages and the ones from motogadget are both really nice... clean units... very cool.
I'll have to see what I can fit where and how the set up and connections would run..

These ideas are helpful... Thanks....
Still would love to find a stock unit if anyone knows where I can find one.....

If you are planning on replacing the tach anyway you could try cutting it open repairing it and gluing it back together.

Hey,
I thought about cutting it open and fixing it and then gluing it back together... I might try it just for fun to see if I can do it... the tach is a little beat up around the edges from trying to open it before I realized it was sealed... I'm going to perhaps replace it with something from Motogadgets or Koso... they both look pretty good... I like the cleaner look with the motogadget stuff... I'll have to see if I can work it out.
I don't know... might lead to redoing the way the front end looks... might need some new ideas there as well....

Hey,
Does anyone know where I can perhaps get a carbon fiber DP gauge cover with tach... in grey... I've seen em... people here have talked about em.... but where can I buyyyyyyy one... can't seem to find em anywhere....  [bang]

i went the cheap route on mine, i found a tach thats the same diameter to fit in the cluster on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RARE-MAC-Tools-Gator-Nationals-Tachometer-PROMO_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33679QQihZ025QQitemZ380058809063QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW  mac tools has a whole line, mine just says mac tools.

Hey,
Thanks for the Mac Tools Recommendation... was it a difficult install as a result... do you have to rewire things??? I was hoping to find the DP carbon one but the option you point out would be easy and cheap in the interim until I find what I want.

it was pretty easy. its just 4 wires, power, ground, tach signal, and illumination. I put both the power and illumination together. for 20$ you can't beat it, its even got an adjustable shift light

Google up Speedometer repair or truck instrument repair.  Many companies specialize in this work.  It's been a while, but our local outfit had all the stuff to open up up, fix em and re-crimp the ring around the glass.  Looked like a reverse can opener.

Its a bummer that I tried to fix this myself and nicked up n cracked the ring at the top screwing around with it...  I might have to just get it repaired anyway... while I store up further funding for the front end reworking... lol these aftermarket guages, bars, top triples, and steering dampers are pricey...  [moto]
I think if I could find the Carbon Fiber DP kit it would be the way to go though... just can't find em... it comes with a Tach and CF face plate...

Title: Re: Need replacement tach ideas

the problem with the dp stuff is its just as expensive as the aftermarket gauges, if you can find it, its ussually more than retail because its so hard to find.

Title: Re: Need replacement tach ideas
Post by: edgesnyc on August 30, 2008, 11:17:32 AM
Yeah I have noticed that the DP stuff is definitely expensive and there is no sense that its going to be something I can get in the US for sure. I found a place in Germany where I can get it perhaps but I have to call and check it out.... and I don't speak German... lol
I'd definitely have to buy the tach and the face plate but I think I might need the bucket the whole cluster sits in cause the face plate looks to be shaped differently than the stocker...
but yeah DP is a pain in that regard... hard to find and $$$$$$

knightrider, when you installed a tach like this on your 900, where did you place it in regards to your 'idiot lights'?  could you post a pic of your install?  ive got a 97 900 and i'd like to add a tach, but don't know how/where i'd reconfigure the other lights, etc.

i accually bought the dp cluster for early bikes without the tach. it came with the wiring, but not the tachometer,  and found a tach was the same diameter as the stocker so it fit perfectly.

A motogadget is really expensive, but you don't need to buy a new triple.  Here's a motogadget with a stock triple with risers cut off, the holes filled and then powdercoated.  Stick on some clip-ons (pictured are Tomasellis from monsterparts -- not too expensive and really adjustable) and lower the headlight (pretty much free), and you've cleaned up the front end a lot.

Duck-stew is responsible.  The mounting bracket is a thin piece of black plastic.  I don't have any close-up pics.  Here is a gallery of bike pics.  There are a couple in there of the gauge cluster and triple.

yup.  But custom mounting points.  The ergos are really aggressive.

Some people had mentioned the Trail Tech Vapor Unit for a replacement speedo, tach, temp sensor on TOB, was wondering if anybody here had experience with that or pics?  I'm interested in replacing the stock cluster for a few reasons...the trip odometer doesn't work, i have no tach, and it's damn ugly.... It's pretty simple aside from extending the wire for the speedo pick-up. People have complained of the tach not being accurate but I've heard it can be fixed with some resistors.  I made a custom mounting bracket because one is not supplied. I don't have the model number on hand but the guys at trail tech are pretty helpful so give them a call and they'll set you up with the right one.  I love this gadget, it has lots of cool features and the back light is super bright.

I did  have some problems with accuracy, so it went back onto my raptor 660 [thumbsup]
