I found cool shite...

http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/mcy/670815874.html

Too bad I'm in the same place I was before... not enough cash on hand to make it happen.  If I tried to sell the SS with any hope of getting out close to what I paid it'd probably take a fricken long while, and even then I'm over $3k below what this bugger is going for.

Arrgh... for the want of money... student loans suck.  >:(

Oh well, maybe someday, right now I'm back to saving for a house...

Ow!  Sucks to be this guy...

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/677105746.html

Must be like the dude who bought the GT1000 from MotoCorsa, ordered it up with the complete Comfort Package, got it home... and his wife made him take it back.  It was on consignment at MC for something like $9500, which was a couple thousand less than the guy had paid for it.  16, yes, sixteen miles on the clock.

Do these guys not ever actually talk to their wives?

I'll forgive you your ignorance BB since you haven't dealt with the 3 rings of marriage yet . . .

But I think you might have been there the night I was talking about when I bought my bike and how after talking, yes talking, to my wife about it for months she gave me the go ahead to go and get a bike.  And how when I came home with the non refundable deposit slip I was informed that she hadn't approved the purchase . . .

You can talk to one of them forever and a day but without a multifunctional translator that takes not on they the words used, but the environment, company, mood, and factors such as whether or not you took out the garbage on the Third Sunday of May 1997 you will truly know the real meaning of Yes, No, OK . . . and many other words that a man takes for granted.  [bang]

Well, another lifetime ago, I was married to the wrong person and she would not, under any circumstances, give me permission to own a motorcycle (among other things, but that should be discussed over many alcoholic beverages if you truly want to hear THAT make the beast with two backsed up story)... SO, when I became divorced, I avowed to myself that before and/or if I ever married again, I'd own a motorcycle first, establish the precedent, and avoid the issue altogether... I waited quite a few years, the perfect bike came along and BECAUSE of said motocycle, I met the love of my life in Ms Vixen... How's THAT for everything happens for a reason?  :P

Thats a pretty cool looking bike, Brian (pits with Drat) did novice school on his Aprilia SVX 550 and blew it up.  :(  either his gearing was messed up, or the HP listed there are wrong, but he couldnt keep up with the SV's.

250lbs is awesome non the less for a bike.

I've been trying to think of ways to spice up my life. I'm 35 years old, happily married with two kids and I have a good job in insurance. But somethings missing. I feel like I'm old before my time. I need to inject some excitement into my daily routine through my arm before its too late. I need a challenge, something to get the adrenaline pumping again. An addiction would be nice, but, in short, I need a nemesis. I'm willing to pay $350 up front for you services as an arch enemy over the next six months. Nothing crazy. Steal my parking space, knock my coffee over, trip me when Im running to catch the BART and occasionaly whisper in my ear, "Ahha, we meet again". That kind of thing. Just keep me on my toes. Complacency will be the death of me. You need to have an evil streak and be blessed with innate guile and cunning. You should also be adept at inconsicuous pursuit. Evil laugh preferred. Send me a photo and a brief explanation why you would be a good nemesis.

British accent preferred.

it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: $350 up front

That ST3s looks nice... wonder what my boss's boss would think when I one-up him.  [evil]  He rides a base-model ST3.

Oh well, I don't have $11,500, and if I did MotoCorsa is trying to get me to buy an S-model Multi from them.  If I could afford the loan payments... that's probably what I'd do.  The Uglystrada is the ideal machine for the riding I want to do.  It's flippin' ugly, but it fits the mission perfectly.  All-day trips on winding backroads with bad asphalt, campgrounds with packed gravel roads, etc.

For the time being, I'm gonna keep racking up the miles on my SS.  The odometer just rolled over 10,000 miles last week (it had 6212 on it last June when I bought it).

SOMEBODY please pick up the fourth one down, that is one sweet 1098. The thing comes with a full Termi exhaust installed and tuned to perfection. WHY DO I NOT HAVE ANY MONEY!!!! Oh wait, b/c I am saving for the 12K service on the Monster and don't have any extra cash. (Oh yeah and that wife is about to pop in 7 weeks). Wait, wait, the kid will need a bike won't he? Hmm, I still don't think that I can get this one to swing past the wife with a 'go-ahead'.

Well?

Thanks for the heads-up... I was really lookin' for an ST4s model.  There's also a pretty blue ST4 (non-S) in Damascus that's been advertised on and off for a month or two, and that one's only $5500.  Drive to Idaho to save $500?  Nah.

At this point, I'm gonna keep riding the SS and saving my pennies for a variety of things...

A) down payment/closing costs on house (those no-down-payment deals still require around 3% cash on hand to cover closing costs...3% of a sh*tload of money is still a lot of money)

B) new LCD computer monitor ($400-$500 for a decent 24"+ model at 1920x1200 resolution)

C) Canon G9 digital point-and-shoot camera (to complement my SLR film camera)

D) proper motorcycle pants

E) furnishings for my dining room/office (bookcase, desk, office chair, file cabinet)

F) AR-15 lower receiver (if it looks like Obama is headed to a win... leftists are likely to try banning so-called "assault weapons" again, and I want another legal serial-numbered AR before Round 2 of the Clinton gun ban)

In addition to the pile of financial considerations (which all told is around the price of an inexpensive Duc)... I'm leaning more toward a Multistrada 1000S or 1100S (the one with Ohlins suspenders).  Those aren't too awfully cheap, but the Multi fits better than the ST.

^^^ Seen that one, been tempted by it for the last month.  I'd love to park one of the special-model superbikes in my garage (or my living room).  Though, if I can afford a 996S, I can afford a Multistroodle 1000S that's been nicely outfitted, and the bike I'm gonna actually use takes higher priority.

I sent an e-mail reply to his CL posting telling him to come by here and make himself known.  No response... either he never checked said e-mail, or he took one look around here and said "oh hell no!" (the latter of which would not surprise me in the least) [laugh]

I've been watching for parts for my soon-to-be track weapon... but before settlign on track configuration, Dad and I were looking for street legal bodywork.  I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=230280606436

With 20 minutes to go, it has ZERO bids.  $500 + $40 s&h.  For resprayed OEM plastics.  That's bloody cheap, especially if that paint is any good.  If I wasn't looking for track-specific fiberglass, I'd have a bid in on these.

Still tempting... if I ever wanted to resell it as a dual-use street/track bike, it'd be aweful nice to have a set of painted street bodywork.  Alas, I don't have extra money sitting around to splurge on luxuries like street bodywork for a track bike.  The bike itself is goin' on credit for the short term...

Cheap track skin is $300.

Good track skin is $800-$1000.

This was $540.

OEM plstics will last until you go down once.  Then they're pretty much a write-off.  Dunno about cheap track skins, but some of the paper-thin garbage I've seen wouldn't hold up even in a simple lowside.

Good track skins will pay for themselves after one lowside, because good fiberglass can be repaired.  [thumbsup]  I distinctly recall looking over Elias' SS with the patched fiberglass, still usable after multiple times down, and IIRC those were Sharkskinz or another reputable brand.

Can I ride it on track days sans bodywork, or would I need some kind of bellypan?  'Cause I gotta say, I'd be seriously tempted to skip the bodywork, at least for a little while.  That lops another $800 off the $3560 estimate, bringing the price down well below $3k.  Scha-weet!   [moto]

I have a street bike, so this CBR wouldn't even have lights, unless Dad wanted to use it on the street, in which case we could put together something like that you've got pictured there.  Dunno if he'd want to ride a cobbled-together nekkid CBR (he has slightly higher standards than I do in that regard), but it's an option.  If I was riding it on the street, I'd want it to look immaculate.  Hence why I'd rather not destroy my SS.  ;)

Majority of the bikes out on track days do not have belly pans.

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: Visolara on August 20, 2008, 11:22:21 AM

Belly pans are not required.  Most if not all the track day providers have a section for what needs to be done to a bike for track days.  In most cases, its simply tape up the glass, and take your mirrors off.  Some have more requirements then others, for instance, NESBA requires you to run a number on your bike.  This can be in duct tape, electrical tape, or an actual race number.

I haven't put this shat up on craigslist yet... you all get first dibs....

Mk105 subwoofer for a home theater... this thing kicks ass, but it is the size of an end table... so Julie says it must go... retails for $1200... will trade you the sub for a nice bottle of Vodka.... you be the judge of what you think is nice.

LCD/Plasma wall mount kit.... 32"-60"  .... I bought two for some lame reason... but am using one of them... still in the box... got it at costco for $90 ... will trade it for a 12 pack of Corona.

If I end up putting this stuff on the list... I may actually charge money for it... but I figure, you guys know my language better... the beer language!!! Woo hoo!! I woulda traded for some nice boobies... but Julie might not like that one.   [evil]

[edit] Sub has a stain on top... looks like somebody set some paper down and a drink on top of it... black touch up and it would look fine.

Oh, yeah.  That is the sexiest sport tourer ever made.  Sigh - I miss mine.  996 engine, ohlins bits, cool hard bags, & goes like stink.

Coolest thing ever:  Did you know the pipes angle up 2 1/2 inches when the bags are off?  Instant grond clearance.  Don't know of any bike anywhere that ever had articulated pipes . . .

The dude that (probably) traded it to the BMW dealer will one day regret parting with it . . .

A riding buddy works at that shop BB.  If you're interested I can arrange for you to get some private time and inf. from him on the bike.

Actually... I think I have his business card.  Met him at one of your Thursday drinkin' outings.  Rick?  Yeah, since I'm off this week, I'd like to go over there and have a look.

I'm still torn between the ST4S and the Multi-S.  The Multi is comfortable, flickable, and all-around capable, plus the S-model has the excellent Ohlins suspenders front and rear.  But... it's flippin' ugly.  :-\  The ST is pretty (especially in the grey/red color scheme... my personal favorite), and you gotta love that 996 mill... but it doesn't seem to fit lanky guys like me quite as well as the Uglystrada, and it's more maintenance-intensive (liquid-cooled Desmoquattro).

Decisions, decisions.  Of course, I can't really afford any of these anyway...  Right now, I'm funding the track bike with debt, and I'll hopefully be paying off the car this December with the bonus from work.  There's also a possibility that I'll make the jump from E1 engineering band to E2, which would be a nice payraise... but that one is a crapshoot.  Might happen, might not.  Definitely not banking on that one.

But regardless of fiscal irresponsibility, I plan to swing by the Tigard BMW shop to look at this ST4S this week.  It's too purdy to pass up the opportunity, and it's not very far from me.

Yeah... except it drags on rather unpleasantly when one gets in over their head in debt as a young adult... :-\ I should know, I have the example of my father, and he's done an excellent job explaining and demonstrating why too much debt too young is such a bad thing.

When I finally get rid of student loans, it'll be a great day.  By then I should have a couple of payraises under my belt, too, making things even better.

More and better toys will come, eventually.  For now I need to focus on enjoying the Ducati I already own.  [thumbsup]

Talking to a dude who totalled his 848... and he is having them put the old cans and ECU back on before he gives it to insurance.... and will perhaps have the termi cans and performance ECU available for purchase... any idea what I should consider as reasonable to take them off his hands? I think they retail at like $1500.... but... hey... they are used right???

If'n it twer me I wouldn't pay more than 50% of retail.

If they were cosmetically immaculate (doubtful on a totaled bike), and had fewer than ~250 miles on 'em, I'd pay upwards of $900-$1000 for a $1500 system.  As soon as you start factoring in any cosmetic damage or significant mileage, the price I'm willing to pay quickly drops below 50% of retail.

But, knowing how many of the folks selling aftermarket goodies operate, my guess is he'll expect to get $1000-$1200 out of a system with 1000 miles and some scratches.  [roll]

Sorry if I'm a little blunt and jaded tonight, it's late on a Friday, I'm just getting out of work, and I have a headache.  Man, it's time to get myself to the bar across the street.  Some coworkers and I are gonna go unwind over some brewskis and a couple casual games of pool.  Later peeps...

Dang... if those scratches are as light as the ones in my SS, I'd buy this nicely discounted 1098!

A 2-month-old slipper clutch for $500?

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/855250911.html

Brad & Gray at MotoCorsa told me I should check into that one.  Apparently they pulled it from the totaled Multi.  I e-mailed the seller, but now I need to call Brad on Tuesday to find out which model of slipper this is, and whether it includes a plate set + basket, or if it's just the slipper that's being sold for $500.

Dangit... I am digging myself a debt hole that's gonna suck to get out of... need to stop looking for (and buying) parts...  :P

Why do you need a slipper clutch?

My 749 does't have one, my SV doesn't either.  My Mille has one, but its stock and not a "real" one.  Slippers are nice for being able to hammer down the gears and not lock the rear wheel.  If your finding yourself locking the rear wheel a lot, then maybe you need one.  If your not, I would save your money for something more practical for your application.

I've got a Pit Bull front stand (the two piece type) that you have first dibs on if you'd like, Dan. $70.00  :) It used to belong to the legendary ToolFan The Great. Won't work on my Monster, my triple is too low. For me to hassle it to lift puts my bike at risk.

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: duc_fan on September 29, 2008, 10:39:09 PM
Well, a slipper clutch isn't a "need" by any stretch of the imagination... but yes, I do find myself regularly chattering the rear when hammering down through the gears while riding aggressively.  Normal riding (puttering around town, Sunday tours, etc), I do a fine job of throttle-blipping and matching engine speed to rear wheel speed, but when we're out riding hard, and I come into a corner fast, I have to grab fistful of front brakes (3 or 4 fingers, clamped down HARD) to whoa that beasty... that much force on the brake lever means Dan has no fine motor control left for throttle blipping, and the result is lots of rear tire chatter.  Thankfully, I've always "whoa'd" early enough that I haven't been leaning over when the rear starts skipping across the pavement.  ;)  It's unsettled enough doing that while I'm upright, and I did learn enough from the textbooks to know to get off the brakes once leaned over (excepting a little trail braking, but nothing really forceful).

Again, it's a fairly minor inconvenience... just means I can't brake as deep as other riders.  Since I'm not racing the SS, not a huge deal.  But... if I can get a $1200-$1500 slipper clutch package for $500... man, it sure would make for sweeter riding.  [moto]

Then again, maybe what really needs to happen is a front brake upgrade (pads? radial MC? 4-pad calipers?) so I don't have to friggin reef on the brake lever.  ;)

Or... more time on track learning how to brake gentler, earlier, and put the hammer down on the throttle sooner.

Oh hey Mo, I just remembered... you mentioned something a few weeks ago about having a Barnett aluminum clutch assembly?  Were you looking to get rid of that?

Billy!  That front stand no worky with your Monster?  ???  If not, I'd gladly buy it for $70!  If that was Toolio's, then I presume it must work with a Supersport.  [thumbsup]

The hole prong fits mine but I'd have to raise my triple for effortless hook up & lift but I don't want too, I like it dropped low. It was Elias' and used on his Supersport. You could roll into my garage and test it first of course, then pick it up later with your car or just take it home and see. I'm just off I-205 @ Foster Rd. Anytime  :)

Save the money for track days.  ;D   I had a couple of chances to wish I had a slipper clutch... but if you just hold the lever in for longer... it becomes a manual slipper clutch... for free!  [thumbsup]  I dropped two gears heading hard into turn 4... when my engine wanted to go up one... so you can imagine the engine breaking on that... ended up power sliding through 4.... not the most fun in the world... but sure got my heart rate up.. and makes for some cool diamonds from the dingleberries I got stored in the back.   ;D

Good Lord... that thing wasn't broken in, was bought in late September, and didn't even have real plates on it yet?!?

I have to wonder why the title is salvage if it's "only cosmetic damage".  He had to have either hit the frame or swingarm, or done more than $10k worth of damage to the bodywork for them to total it.  A broken clutch lever and one scratched panel does not a totaled motorcycle make.  Methinks the seller is hiding something inamongst all those grammatical errors...

Bought my first bike "used" with about 500 miles on it.  Apparently the original owner bought it, rode it, and scared themself to death.  Good deal for me.

But yeah, salvaged title on some scraped panels?  Doesn't pass the smell test.

Still haven't figured out why it's popular.

NINJA HAULER: 2005 Nissan Xterra - $12900 (Ronan / Lake County )

Reply to: sale-926508578@craigslist.org [?]

OK, let me start off by saying this Xterra is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women). My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o'clock shadow, this Nissan would look like Tom Selleck. It is just that manly.

It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie & Fitch that you had your eye on. It wasn't meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens & Things. No, that's what your Prius is for. If that's the kind of car you're looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now. I mean it. Just stop.

This car was engineered by 3rd degree ninja super-warriors in the highest mountains of Japan to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis. They didn't even consi der superfluous nancy boy amenities like navigation systems (real men don't get lost), heated leather seats (a real man doesn't let anything warm his butt), or On Star (real men don't even know what the hell On Star is).

No, this brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need. It has a 265 HP engine to outrun the cops. It's got special blood/gore resistant upholstery. It even has a first-aid kit in the back. You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you're operating on yourself. The Xterra also has an automatic transmission so if you're being chased by Libyan terrorists, you'll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time. It's saved my bacon more than once.

It has room for you and the four hotties you picked up on the way to the gym to blast your pecs and hammer your glutes. There's a tow hitch to pull your 50 caliber anti-Taliban, self cooling machine gun. I also just put in a new windshield to replace the one that got shot out by The Man.

My price on this bad boy is an incredibly low $12,900, but I'll entertain reasonable offers. And by reasonable, I mean don't walk up and tell me you'll give me $5,000 for it. That's liable to earn you a Burmese-roundhouse-sphincter-kick with a follow up three fingered eye-jab. Would it hurt? Hell yeah. Let's just say you won't be the prettiest guy at the Coldplay concert anymore.

There's only 69,000 miles on this four-wheeled hellcat from Planet Kickass. Trust me, it will outlive you and the offspring that will carry your name. It will live on as a monument to your machismo.

Now, go look in the mirror and tell me what you see. If it's a rugged, no holds barred, super brute he-man macho Chuck Norris stunt double, then contact me. I might be out hang-gliding or BASE jumping or just chilling with my ladies, but I'll get back to you. And when I do, we'll talk about a price over a nice glass of Schmidt while we listen to Johnny Cash.

To sweeten the deal a little, I'm throwing in this pair of MC Hammer pants for the man with rippling quads that can't fit into regular pants. Yeah, you heard me. FREE MC Hammer pants.

Rock on.

I was the white guy with the black Burberry jacket that you demanded I hand over shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I hope you somehow come across this message. I'd like to apologize.

I didn't expect you to crap your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket. Truth is, I was wearing the jacket for a reason that evening, and it wasn't that cold outside. You see, my girlfriend had just bought me that Kimber 1911 .45 ACP pistol for Christmas, and we had just picked up a shoulder holster for it that evening. Beautiful pistol, eh? It's a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head, isn't it?

I know it probably wasn't a great deal of fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with that brown stinking sludge flopping about in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse since you also ended up leaving your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. I couldn't have you calling up any of your buddies to come help you try to mug us again. I took the liberty of calling your mother, or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, and explaining to her your situation. I also bought myself some gas on your card. I gave your shoes to one of the homeless guys over by Vinnie Van GoGo's, along with all of the cash in your wallet, then I threw the wallet itself in a dumpster.

I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell. They'll be on your bill in case you'd like to know which ones. Alltel recently shut down the line, and I've only had the phone for a little over a day now, so I don't know what's going on with that. I hope they haven't permanently cut off your service. I was about to make some threatening phone calls to the DA's office with it. Oh well.

So, about your pants. I know that I was a little rough on you when you did this whole attempted mugging thing, so I'd like to make it up to you. I'm sure you've already washed your pants, so I'd like to help you out. I'd like to reimburse you for the detergent you used on the pants. What brand did you use, and was it liquid or powder? I'd also like to apologize for not killing you and instead making you walk back home humiliated. I'm hoping that you'll reconsider your choice of path in life. Next time you might not be so lucky. If you read this message, email me and we'll do lunch and laundry. Peace!

Apparently this was actually posted on Craigslist in Savannah, GA, in early January.  Whether the story is true or not is up for debate, but I found it hilarious nonetheless.

Mo - sv650.... I wonder what's wrong with the motor... would be cool if we could pick it up and then have all them spare parts for racing... or if its an easy fix... cleaning it up to have a spare racer.

replacement unsplit motor may cost $1000 or so depending on miles.  That puts it around $3000, then you need to race prep it.  That's an easy $2500 more, now your at $5500.  See where Im going.  :)

For me (someone who crashed 4 times last year), the items I needed to replace were disposable items like bar ends, foot pegs, levers, and the big item was I had to replace my can when it vibrated apart.

Shure SCL3 sound-isolating earphones/in-ear monitors at Guitar Center or Musician's Friend.
(click the pic to go to the Guitar Center product listing)

The white ones are on a special rebate... these wankers have an MSRP of $200, a price at the aforementioned retailers of $150, and the white ones have an instant $90 rebate making them $60.

I ordered a pair from Guitar Center's website last weekend, since their retail store in Clackamas didn't have them in stock.

Catch is: you have to order them before February 28, 2009.

lol... guess you didn't look at my sig line... I already have a track bike.  '05 CBR600RR.  Still needs bodywork, but it's got everything else now.

Of course considering my current employment circumstances, it may be getting posted on Craigslist.  :P

Anyway, the 'sedici is just a really haute bike.

Heh, doesn't surprise me the poster "borrowed" copyrighted material... it was way too flashy to have been entirely honest.  Not even sure he actually has the bike for sale.  If I had a Desmocedici for sale, I don't think Craigslist is the first place I'd be posting.  How about... MotoCorsa?  I'm sure they'd loooooove to have a D16RR sitting in the showroom on consignment.

You could probably get more posting it in on the OMRRA.com forums... but if you keep it... I have a single rail tiny bike trailer that would fit behind your VW. You can have it if you want it. he he he. Or, if you want me to take it to the track and sell it for you... my other trailer fits two bikes... I can take it with me to show to guys at the track.

Thanks for the offer and suggestions, Ryan!  We'll see how the job search goes.  There's some cool stuff I've found in the aerospace industry in Oregon and Washington.  It'll be later in March before I decide whether the CBR has to go.  If the search drags on too long, or I move too far from home, it'll go on the chopping block.  If I stay within driving distance of Mom & Dad's, where I have access to a tow vehicle, trailer, and storage, I'll try to keep it.  Both of my bros really want to go try it out at the track, so I'm at least gonna try to keep it.

Speaking of lightweight trailers... I gotta find out what the deal is with the GTI VR6.  I can find Class I hitches for regular Golfs, but they all say they are not for the VR6 models.  Funny, the VR6 has more power and braking.  I would think if any of them are better for towing a small trailer, the VR6 is it.  Whatever...  One of these days I'll get around to buying a truck or full-size SUV, then it won't be an issue.

Different trim, bumper, or pseudo-framerails on the VR6 perhaps?

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: duc_fan on March 03, 2009, 09:11:24 PM
Best guess is the rear valance or the VR's beefier exhaust cause problems.  At first glance the rear valance looks the same, but I've never looked closely at mine vs. my bro's '95 Golf.  I know the rear of the unibody and the steel bumper core are identical between VR's and regular Golfs.  Whatever the issue, it's possibly a limited enough market that nobody bothered to create a specific hitch to fit it.  If I really wanted to go nuts, I could buy a hitch for another Golf, figure out what needed modded/fabbed, and get it done.  It's just not a high enough priority for me to mess with.

Check wera, svforums, and obviously ebay.  :)  There are some salvage yards close to Portland that may have stuff too.  I forget which, I would need to look over some old emails/PMs but I recal talking with someone about getting some spares from them.

Man, I wish the guy who initially responded to my craigslist wanted ad would get back to me with pics or contact info!  He was looking for a lot less money.

It's suddenly been driving me nuts for some inexplicable reason... I really really really want the 2002+ aluminum swingarm for my SS.

what is the advantage of such a purchase and how does it compare to 2 trackdays?

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: duc_fan on April 24, 2009, 11:36:36 PM
1) It's 40% stiffer.
2) It looks a helluva lot better than the fugly rectangular-section tubing that makes up my current swingarm.

Number 2 normally wouldn't bug me, except that the 900SS has almost no straight lines.  All of the bodywork is curved, sculpted, waisted.  The swingarm clashes horribly.

Normally I'm not a "style" guy, I'm a function guy.  But... my motorcycle is one area where I tend to throw pragmatism out the window and go with what feels right.  This is also more of an industrial design thing, and the swingarm totally mucks up the bikes lines.  The later swingarm fixes that.  Yes, to permanently fix the aesthetics is worth two one-time track days.  I just don't have the $500.  I'd be happier if it was only the cost of one trackday (mostly because I can squeeze that out of my bank account... whereas $500 is a little rich).  For some of you, the motorbike is merely a mode of transportation.  Mine isn't.  It's a toy, and a passion.  Improvements to it are often less about function and more about form (though in some cases they will be both).  If I wanted a motorcycle that "made sense" I'd be riding a Honda or BMW.

"It'll buff right out"  [laugh]

lol... I know.  The ad gives me pause.  Here was his response to my question about whether it was bare aluminum or clear coated, and if it was off a totaled bike:

Quote
Yes it is clear coated. The bike was not totaled, I bought it to get the frame for a special project I am working on. I am having a replica of the SS frome made out of titanium and I didn't want to strip down my bike so I bought this one so the frame maker would have have a something to work from. I am building the world's lightest SS1000, it is currently 342 lbs ready to ride in street trim, my goal is 320.

- fastfrank77

Anyway, I just needed to vent/share/whatever.  I want it, but I can't justify $500 right now.  If I was employed, I'd probably buy it.  I really want the dude with one locally for under $300 to e-mail me back...

Dan, I feel the same way about the steel swingarm on my 800 Dark.  Just kinda spoils the cool industrial look of a Monster, looks like an afterthought.  I've seen some for sale for the Monster but I pass, I have a few reasons.  1) A couple of track days would make me a better rider but the bike would still be faster than I am as it is.  2) A Dark Monster should look a little crude and rough around the edges, I think.  3) My low pipes mostly hide it ;)

On the other hand, for a 900SS, buy it, polish it, slap it in.  That would look sexy!

Of course economy, finances, employment, I've been there.  More will come along later.

Scott

Well, that eBay SS swingarm auction is ending.  No bids, at at $500 I'm sure as heck not gonna.  I messaged the guy yesterday and told him that if it doesn't sell and he really wants to get rid of it, to derby it with a starting bid of $300.  Haven't heard back, so we'll see what happens.

Later yesterday (after messaging the eBay auctioner) I heard from the local guy who had responded to my first CL ad... he hasn't been able to get back to me for a very good reason that I won't divulge publicly, but he said he's going to try sending pics this week.  We'll see how that goes.  I'd obviously prefer to buy locally.

And now back to your regularly scheduled Craiglist postings...

Okay, getting away from that tangent...  :P

Any of you blokes have a pair of stock Monster turn signals laying around?  Want a few bucks cash-in-hand and a little less clutter in the garage?  I'm looking for a pair of the oval ones to replace the rears on my SS, since it has the old-style rectangular ones on it now.  I installed integrated mirrors a little while ago, getting rid of the front signals.  Now I'd like to clean up the rear.  I figure it's an inexpensive thing to whet my aesthetic modding appetite for the time being.

I still have a few of these left. I've given some away in the past on here so I can't charge you but... if you buy that Pit Bull front stand from me for 70 bucks you can have all four or five stock blinkys that I have left.

You could even turn around a sell the stand for $100.00 I'll bet.  8)

Oh crap!  Thanks for reminding me Billy, I need to come buy that stand from ya.  Not to resell it... I need it!

Shoot me a PM with your addy and a good time for me to swing by.  I'm crashing at the parents' house for the time being, near Clackamas Town Center, and IIRC you're not too far north of here.  I'm gonna be helping a friend with an oil change during the day tomorrow, but otherwise my schedule is free.

Oh yah, I only need two blinkys, just swapping the rears out.  You'll have to see the new mirrors with integrated signals sometime, it really cleaned up the front of that SS.  [thumbsup]

Hmm...

I found a neat townhouse in White Salmon that will be coming on the market sometime soon, like 2 miles up the hill from work.  Too close to justify riding the Duc, or starting up the GTI VR6.  The road between Bingen and White Salmon is a steeper hill than I really want to ride up on a bicycle, especially when tired after the workday.

Plus, I could use an excuse for an exporation moto.

This BMW ad piqued my interest, because I've wanted an excuse to buy an F650GS for a while.

Granted, a DRZ400S would really be the ideal bike for a short commute.  Ride to work & back, sip fuel, and go exploring up in the mountains.  Could also possibly ride it in light snow.

Hmm....

It's not on Craigslist, it's not on eBay, it's going to Goodwill if no one wants it:

Well that explains it then.

Speaking of helmets i was at cycle gear today and saw a steal of a deal on their clearance shelf.  Aria helmet originally $449 discounted to $179.  It appears that its the last one and they just need to get rid of it.  I couldn't find a size on the helmet but it fits my head and i wear a large so i assume its a large.

Check the manufacture date, it may be several years old already just from sitting on the shelf.  The foam inside gets more rigid over time and doesn't protect as well.  It's usually marked either on a sticker inside or on one of the chin straps.

Yah . . . so I was registering my Scorpion for warranty purposes . . .

The F'n mfg date is on a sticker inside under the padding.  Had to pull it all out.  Do that, put it all back in and you know what . . . on the next screen I had to get the Snell # . . . yep . . . you guessed it - inside under the F'n padding again!

At least I know my helmet was made fresh in Sep of 08.  ;)

Yup.  I saw that lid.  Jet black.  And tried it on.  It is definitely an XL, pretty sure.  It was loosey-goosey on my noggin.  You'd have to be a bucket-headed sumpregnant dog to wear that thing.

I wear a size L Arai RX-whatever and it is snug.

I read somewhere online that Michael Jordan wears a size L Arai also.  I believe my similarity to MJ begins and ends right there.   ;D.

I guess i am a bucket-headed sumpregnant dog because the thing fit just fine on me.  If i was in the market for a helmet i would of looked at it a bit more.  Looking at the discount sticker on the helmet reveals it is being marked down because its been sitting around for six months.

Are you sure?  I was mis-informed for quite a while about proper helmet fitment.  A proper helmet must fit like a glove.  It (the helmet) must be un-rotatable on your head.

I.e., if you grab it by the chin portion and try to move it around your head while trying to keep your head still, your head must move with the helmet.  If it doesn't, then your helmet is too big.

By the way, that was just my funny internetz writein':  you're not a sumpregnant dog, bucketheaded or otherwise.  I'm a sumpregnant dog.   :)

Next time I see you I'm gonna do the helmet test on you, so don't kick me in the nutz when I grab your helmet when it's on your head..

Last i checked my head moved with my helmet when performing said helmet check.  When i tried on the helmet it passed the helmet test.  I just have a seriously large head.  Most hats don't fit me, and the ones that do are adjustable ones that are maxed out on the adjustment.

At least he knows he doesn't deserve it, he's selling it because he doesn't use it.  Of course even on stands after 3 years it's going to need tires.

I'm also guessing he's single.  Not many married guys with a motorcycle, black leather couch, and large stereo speakers in their living rooms.

Hmm... I think I need to go talk to MotoCorsa about a trade.

6200 miles and includes all three luggage cases.

I won't be able to afford a 'strada anytime soon, especially not the S-model I want (what with trying to buy a house, maybe a 4x4, taking care of other cars, dropping a wad on a new TV, etc).  This gives me my SS's great engine in a more comfortable and capable package.  Plus, if I can swing a trade (+/- a littel cash?), I wouldn't have to sell the CBR trackbike, so I still have a sportbike toy.  Could also make the CBR street legal if I really wanted to.  Go all Jon Fay-style... driving light under the bike's chin, tail/brake light, and it'd only be for daylight riding so no turn signals needed.  [thumbsup]

No idea... reviews say it's got a tall standover height (good for me), and a "400 mile seat", but we all know how reviews can be.  I'm gonna try to squeeze in a trip to MotoCorsa this weekend to check it out for myself.  We'll see... I've got plenty of other stuff to get done.

Getting a seat redone is easy and most stock seats suck anyway.  Don't let that decide for you.

I have never ridden Cara with the stock seat.  When I picked her up, I had already purchased the DP Gel Seat, and have put all 6900 miles on that seat... :)

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: duc_fan on July 31, 2009, 09:25:00 PM
Yeah... see, the seat thing to some degree that indicates I should just keep the SS.  I've lowered the pegs so my knees don't bother me at all.  I can order a Throttlemeister so my throttle wrist doesn't kill me anymore.  I can even go so far as to get the Speedymoto raised & adjustable clipons.  Throw in a custom seat, or a Sargent, and proceed to rack up the miles.  There's some dewd down in Florida who's put around 100k miles on a '99 or '00 900SS, sport touring all over the bloody place.

My biggest hangup with the Cagiva is getting hosed on the value.  Mine's worth at least $6k, maybe $6500, considering that it has documentation (including maintenance logbook) and a bunch of OE parts.  It hasn't been riced out, stunted, or any crap like that.  All mods have been "OEM+", in keeping with the original owner's theme.

In contrast, outside of MotoCorsa that Cag is worth $5k-$5500.  Even if I could get them to do a straight trade, I'm basically throwing away $1000.  Now granted, the Cagiva includes (according to their ad) all three cases, whereas the SS has no luggage right now.  I could swap back to the stock tail section and it would accommodate a full set of Nelson-Rigg sportbike soft luggage (the "Silver Streak" line that matches my tankbag).

Gack.  Decisions, decisions.  [bang]

Sounds like a no brainer.  If you're going to lose $1000, I bet you could get all or most of the mods you mentioned for around that much and keep the SS.  Add to the equation that the SS just looks so much more sexy and I'd say keep the SS.  All other things being equal, the sexier bike wins.

Scott

Title: Re: I found Cool Shite for you on craigslist thread.
Post by: duc_fan on August 05, 2009, 08:21:52 PM
Yeah, the ergo mods I mentioned come in at well under $1k.  Throttlemeister (black coated) is $130, Sargent seat is $350, Speedymoto clipons are $250; subtotal is $730.  I could use some knurled footpegs so my feet don't slip forward anymore, those are an additional $50.  That's it in the ergonomic department... everything else on my wishlist are hotrod parts... (radial master cylinders, lightened flywheel, better clutch pack, lighter wheels, and beastier brakes all have me salivating... not that I intend on flushing money on all those, but they're tempting nonetheless)

One thing I found out last weekend was that Todd at MotoCorsa was kinda blunt about the fact they won't do a trade on a used bike.  Must be wholesale in, retail out.  He tried to claim they could only ask $5500 or $6k retail for my bike... I didn't cough "bullsh!t" but I should have.  2 years ago they wanted $6k for a yellow half-fairing 750 sport with 18k miles and a lot more wear and tear than mine has.  These things have already depreciated what they're gonna lose off sticker, now the prices are dependent on condition.  Yeah, it's been 2 years... but y'all have seen my bike.  Throw in service manuals, maintenance log, a pile of receipts, OE parts... yeah, I'd wager if they had my bike it'd have a rediculously high price tag on it, closer to $7k (yes, that's a laughable price for an SS... but MotoCorsa ain't exactly known for rational prices on used bikes).

Anyway, Todd wasn't willing to seriously talk deal, so I'd be stuck with the hassle of trying to sell mine.

Now, the Cag has GREAT ergos.  The seat and bars felt nicer than a Multi, and the tank had a very natural feeling between the knees (no double entendres you wanks).  However... it had belts and fluids changed, but they have not done the valve check, and it's sitting at 6200 miles (10k km on the metric odo).  The rear shock has to come out in order to even begin to get to the vertical cylinder.  Another issue (and a big one for me, with wanting to go 2-up): no remote adjustment on the preload.  That rear shock is buried, so adjusting preload would be a royal PITA.  Nor was I able to find an aftermarket option with adjustable preload.  Another minor quibble: the Cag, while in very nice cosmetic condition for a 9 year old bike, was not immaculate.  They may have the complete service history, but for a non-showroom-condition bike that still needs the valves checked they're asking quite a bit of money at $6k.

The new Multi 1100's have quite a bit more power, all of them have remote adjustable rear preload, and they have roughly equal carrying capacity.  A near-new 1100S (a whopping 85 miles) was in West Linn a couple weeks ago... it went for $9500.  Since I'm hosed on the value of mine vs. the Cagiva anyway, I'm going to stick with the SS until I can afford a Multi.  It's going to take me a while, what with trying to buy a house, but I need to do what's right by my budget while still enjoying the ride.

Oh, in case anyone is wondering... I haven't just gone out and bought a Multi yet because I refuse to fund a motorcycle (read: toy) with debt.  Sure, I could easily make the monthly payments on my engineer's salary, but I'm trying to avoid throwing money down a rathole in the form of interest.  At least when I waste it on parts, I have something tangible to show for it.  Also, having a new vehicle loan whilst applying for a mortgage has been advised against by bankers, brokers, and real estate agents.  House purchase takes priority.

Post by: scott_araujo on August 05, 2009, 08:34:07 PM
Dan, I think the Cagiva being nine years old and not nearly as sexy as the SS makes the decision.  If you want that style of bike I'd say it's worth buying the Multi.  Snappier looking bike and Ryan says he really digs the remote preload adjust.  I'd think about it if I wasn't about to have a baby and my Monster didn't look so sexy ;)  Also, Ohlins suspension all around is a serious upgrade instead of just a lateral trade.

Buy a project bike for under 300 dollars.

You will enjoy fixing it yourself, and the money will slowly bleed out over time (kinda like loan payments).

And you run the risk of never get it working and wasting all your money and time.

However, if you don't have a GF it gives you something to do.

Also it will occupy the majority of your free mind, learning, obsessing, etc.... until you find something else to obsess on.

Lets face it, as a male, we have to obsess on something.

And a box of parts and a rolling frame is just the ticket to keep you too busy and too obsessed to obsess about other things.

Speaking of that John, how hard is it to find a restorable Honda twin for a few hundred?  Something that's popular enough to easily find parts for; I'm thinking between 160 and 400ccs.  I'd like to put one in the garage and just putter away on it over time.  Not sure I'd make a race bike, probably more like a near stock budget restore for a daily driver.  Then again, I could sell the Ducati and probably finance the bike and a few seasons of racing.  I rarely break 50mph on my trek to and from work.  I just really like the Honda twins, dead simple and clean with little engines designed like a Swiss watch.

Don't you mean, Japanese version of a Swiss watch?  It's called a Seiko and is battery powered, not mechanical, like a real Swiss watch.  Just like the Japanese version of a BMW 2002 is called a Datsun 510.

Oh, and I have a pet peeve for using mixed comparative analogies.

[edit] i thought most watches were battery powered....

Find any old CB (pres 72?) less than 250 cc and you could race it in V2 class

V2 typically runs 160-175s

I was thinking something small for a street bike so I can rail on it ever time I ride it without being a hooligan.

but that will be another project...

As for the resto...

depends on what you want to do... just keep an eye on CL

I have seen Mark fix a CB750 with massive electrical problems with a pair of scissors some electrical tape and screw driver.

can always stop by the "garage" if you need help

Hey Scott, we have a nice CB400A for sale: $200... but we're in Bend and it's an automatic (still think it'd be perfect for riding around town, just get on and go)... was going to restore it into the coolest/slowest cafe racer ever, but alas, too many new house projects and that's draining all of our finances for the next few years... heh  If interested, see this thread for pics: http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=8437.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=8437.0) and just msg me from there!  :)

Thanks Marv.  Don't want an automatic, I'm kinda looking for something more traditional.  Though a cafe racer with five spokes and a front disc would be kinda neat :)

My time and money are getting sucked dry by the house lately too.  I'm hoping if I can get a heap into the garage then I can take small bites of time and money as I go.  If I don't get it before the baby arrives it may be a while.  Gotta get a foot in the door so to speak.

Totally understandable!  I had made a promise to myself when I got divorced that I was going to get a motorcycle prior to any serious relationship again to establish it (ex wouldn't let me get one)... Who knew that in that process, I'd find the love of my life, who ALREADY rode!!  :)

Oh yeah... I have a project.  Two, actually.

The '05 600RR.  But... it's pretty much done.  Shake-n-bake with some fiberglass, swap the tires for the used Pirellis I picked up on the cheap, and wha-la, track whore.  I just haven't dropped the $800 on track bodywork yet because I have other things that require that money... like tires for my '98 GTI.  I finally ordered a set of  rubbas for the Audi TT "Fat Five" 17-in wheels I had.

Also... my parents have the 1973 CL175 I learned to ride on.  Honda parallel twin.  Classic.  AFAIK, all it needs is a carb rebuild and an oil change.  Cosmetically, it's gorgeous.  Dust 'er off and polish the chrome... ready for the local cruise-in.  It has something absurdly low like 4000 original miles.  I keep lookin' for carb kits on fleabay... just need to take the chance and order one.  All the descriptions are close, but none of these sellers gives me enough info to be 100% sure.  Then again... do I need to be 100% sure when we're talkin' about a whopping $20?

So yeah... lots o' money-sucking bachelor projects.  ;)  Oh... and there's someone of the feminine persuasion on the radar as well.  When she gets back from the business trip she's on, we'll see if she'll go out with me.

Anywho...

This is a great ad:

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/for/1362643834.html (http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/for/1362643834.html)

Particularly this part:

Quote
...Of course to add all these wonderful traits into one motorcycle some concessions need to be made, the most obvious is the looks. But to say it’s ugly is terribly unfair. It’s like saying an A-10 Warthog or an AH-64 Apache helicopter is ugly. Well, they are ugly – but they are not without beauty.

The best way we can describe the bikes looks is by going back, this time to High School and that tom-boy so many of us used to pal around with. Sure she wasn’t the prettiest girl in your class. Her hair was always pulled back into a tight ponytail; she was a little too skinny, a little bit lanky. She never wore make-up, never wore pink and never fussed about silly girl things like lace or princesses. But when it was time to get into trouble, she was always a willing partner, unafraid to get dirty or bruised. After a while she started to look differently. She didn’t seem to be so lanky anymore and for the boys who knew, she was all they could think about.

And so is the Multistrada; lacking the lascivious curves of a pearl white 848 or the salacious shape of a 916. But the Multistrada doesn’t have the rigorous maintenance schedule required by liquid cooled, four-valve Ducati motors. Those sultry superbikes may be the objects with which we wish to have a torrid fling; an unbridled track day or a tempestuous romp along a canyon road. But the Multistrada is a bike you can live with, a bike you can bring home to Mom, and what nobody else realizes is that for all the bumps and twists in this world; you are having a helluva lot more fun, a lot more frequently than they are.

I always preferred the tomboy that was fun to hang out with to the high-maintenance pretty girls that didn't do anything.

That sounds like a plan.

Of course... if said cool chica wants to go riding, I suppose I'll have to have ANOTHER bike for 2-up... unless she wants her own.  ;D  Either way, I end up with multiple bikes in the garage.
