Title: The BoMB...
Post by: ducpainter on September 14, 2008, 05:07:16 PM

Ummmm...

why do you think it's called 'bike' of the moment?

They don't have to be one off customs...

they don't have to have 11ty billion $ worth of bling bolted on...

they don't have to be Monsters...or even Ducatis.

Anyone have a Metralla?...an AJS?...a Royal Enfield 750?

gettin' the picture?

Write it up....take some pics...

get in touch with a flounder and we'll take it from there.

...and the next person that asks about it will be assigned the task of writing their own bike up. ;D

I think the mirrors have been changed since this.

Waitaminit.  You guys want me to brag about my bike?  The one I've seen once in a year?  The one I've ridden nonce since October '07 (herniated disc in my back)?  Wellllll if I recall correctly, it has two tires and is quite beautiful.  I am no longer rocking the stock mirrors.  What else can I recall....I got low CF Termis, a gas tank repainted to the correct Ducati Dark (thanks Trouble), genuine knockoff Napoleon mirrors, CRG levers, a groovy looking clutch cover (anybody wanna tell me who makes it?), tail chop, other cf bits PIAA super-white headlight bulb.  By now it's probably Field Mouse Manor as it's in my parent's garage in rural Connecticut.  Here's a pic of her & I from last summer.  I feel like I'm jumping into the middle of a conversation here, so if this is not what you had in mind, IT'S ALL TROUBLE'S FAULT!!!

How do you want the information Submitted?
as a post, a PM or an Email?
some photo's and a quick write up of each photo?

I'd like to put my humble little S2R forward one day for a write up when it's done.

Email works fine...

don't forget that the pics should be hi-res.

The format isn't all that critical...we're pretty laid back...

and the WebGeeKs will arrange things so it fits.

The bomb pics the only pics we host.

It doesn't have to be 'finished'...

are they ever? ;D

I wish it was, all that's left of mine is a fading photograph, a sticker on my toolbox and memories.
For years a picture of the front brake was part of Cycle World's index page.
I believe they stopped importing them into the US around 72 (street bikes needed batteries).
A lot of them were thrashed on the race track. ;D

If we're throwing in votes for our own bikes, let me throw in mine! She's a somewhat rare one, a 2003 620 Dark that came stock as a Dark with silver frame and wheels. A while back fellow DML'rs helped me to find out that only 199 of these type were shipped to the US from Italy.

Here are a few pics:

If people want to submit their own bike it's great.

You need to pm myself or drylbowden with a write up and links to high res pics.

The BoMB page happens to be part of the software issues we've been struggling with lately. Hopefully either we, or the authors of the software, will figure it out soon.

from Urban Dictionary.com -

"bombtastic - a word that means that something is so completely awesome, you can't describe it with any other word. comes from the bomb."

Thanx to those who had some nice comments on my GT.

I sent the link to some friends, both riders and nonriders. I just got a response from one friend and wrote him my favorite story about the GT and thought I'd share it here ...during the "15 minutes of fame" for the GT on the BoMB...

I was at a bike night at the Quaker Stake and Lube in Sharon, PA. Anyone who rides old iron has had someone come up to them and say "Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen one of those." I've heard it dozens of times any time I ride one of my old machines. Well this night was a bit different. I had just parked the GT and was removing my gear. A guy came up to me, looked at it and said "Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen one of (pause), ya know, I've never seen one of those."

Honesty is so refreshing!

Hey Ducpainter,

Is there a reason why my Monster is dismissed from the BomB list? I don't mind, but if there is one I like to know.  ;)

Cheers,

The only reason would be that you haven't submitted it.

We don't do the write ups or the choosing.

Write it up along with high res pics hosted somewhere and pm the info to me or darylbowden and it will be the BoMB.
edit: If we missed a submission please accept my apologies.

This thread is actually for the Bike of the Moment which is on the forum front page. You might want to post that in the Bikes of the DMF thread (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=205.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=205.0)).

If you'd like to submit a Bike of the Moment, PM ducpainter or darylbowden with your submission along with links to high resolution pictures and a write up about the bike.

Hope that helps you out.

Me, too.

In 2002, I was just leaving a job.  Against my better judgement, I picked up a cycletrader or something and way in the back there was a no photo ad under "European Bikes" for a Bultaco.  I called, turned out to be a Metralla in perfect condition with 400 miles on it.  Not only that, but it had all the stock stuff installed, and the "Kit America" factory racing stuff NEW IN A BOX.
For once in my life, my common sense told me it may not be a really bright idea to spend $4k on a smoker street bike (After all, I already owned two RD400 Daytona Specials) so I passed.

I vowed to myself I'd never make THAT mistake again! [laugh]  (and I haven't, which is way I have 14 bikes.)

The build thread is in my signature...lots more pictures there.  [thumbsup] Everyone can also ask questions there...or PM me.

The Monstrada is actually undergoing more mods this winter. The headers have been powdercoated black, the headlight is being replaced with a different unit, and the seat will probably be re-upholstered to get rid of the Italian flag colored stripes. I've also cleaned up the wiring a lot. New pics will follow when complete.  :)

I'm also going to have cams installed, and a Power Commander with a custom dual cylinder map.  [evil]

In all honesty. I think you have the pick of the 2 valve models. I reckon it's a keeper. (I'm not biased, I have a 95 M900).

IMO this because you have the "S" version gear, early more reliable/tunable fuel injection, engine updates over the carbed models, but keeping the 888 hoop chassis and traditional Monster looks; a great combination.
Whatever you are giving away in capacity, compression and valve size to the later models can be rectified (if you wanted given the $$$, but who cares).

I never liked yellow as a color for Monsters, but that flame job changes everything.

Is that an Ohlins on the back too?(envy).

Nice bike. Cheers [drink]

As far as the mods go, first and foremost would be the BST wheels, followed by the 999 forks and brakes.  There really are so many other things to mention about it but I am altogether FAR too lazy.  ;)  Next thing on it will be an 1100 kit with high-comp pistons though.   [evil]

Those are the stock forks.  Acutally all the suspension is stock.  Just got it all dialed in for my body weight/riding style.

Na, just waiting on funds to get it all taken care of.  I will be doing a set of Termi header tubes and custom from there back.  I want to see it I can do something along the lines of what Roland Sands did on his Hypermotard.

No, the new owner is not here. I did mention to him on a number of occasions to join up and have a look around.

But the old one still is!  ;D

I was sad to see the bike go, but with the Wife and I moving to the opposite end of Australia and transport options being rather
limiting, (I am leaving a couple of weeks before the wife to get somewhere to live and get everything set up before she and the
pets arrive) I leave on our grand adventure in about 2 weeks and trying to do the move on a bike was just not practical. I need
to be able to take a car load of gear. So I decided to let the bike go for the time being, I figure there are always more Ducati's
out there, waiting to be modded and tweaked.

And having gone down the "modding road" with one bike, it has taught me a hell of a lot about choosing a direction for the Mods
early and sticking to the path, instead of jumping around, changing my mind, which meant I wasted time and money doing things
twice and taking things off which did not suit the direction/style I wanted to go with at that moment. It was a fun learning experience
though! and has taught me so much and introduced me to the fine bunch of folks on this Forum, So while I may be Ducati-less at the
moment, I won't be for long!  [evil]

I will stress this was my decision, my wife did not want me to sell the bike, as she knew how much I enjoyed riding it and working
on it. But the practicality of being a 1 car and 1 bike family would not work, so I have jumped into a Cage for the time being, In fact
I think selling the Monster may have been a wise thing to do, with so many big long smooth dirt roads where I am going, all begging
to be explored..... Me thinks the new MultiStrada may be the next weapon of Choice.   [drool]

Here are some more Pics that I took when submitting the bike for BOMB:

was thinking of doing a seat bob like that in the near future any insight on how easy it was? i assume you just chop the frame back to where
you want it relocate the post for the seat lock and also replace the latch on the seat to line up with the new position of the frame then just
recover the seat and fab up a new taillight bracket. does that sound about right?

Title: Re: The BoMB...
Post by: carriesanaxe on December 17, 2010, 06:26:56 PM
yeah except yours sounds like a better way of going about it. I was hit from behind so it was out of necessity.
.....so i had a piece of flat bar welded to the frame, ordered the front half of a corbin componant seat, http://www.corbin.com/ducati/dm97f.shtml (http://www.corbin.com/ducati/dm97f.shtml)
(part number dm9-7-f). I couldn't salvage the latch.

Could the owner of this bike please submit this for the BoMB?  It only takes a few minutes to do a short write-up.

Ok Ok, about time someone posted a bike or two, so i will break the drought, I guess i am lucky to be able to own what i would say are my favourite bikes. One being an 05 S4R Monster plus an MV Agusta F4 312R. But this is about my Duc, got it after stepping up from a 620.
I bought it with only 4000k's on it, standard other than a piece of carbon here and there. It is very close to the finished product.......BUT.........just purchased Ohlins forks from an 848 track bike so i guess it never ends eh. What have i done to it you ask..?  What haven't I would be much easier to reply to.
It has been blinged up, but tastefully.......it won its class in The Ducati Owners Club Concourse De'Elegance this year, Monster 4 Valve section which blew me away as there were quite a few good bikes in the class. What helped is the fact that this baby actually gets ridden often, sporting close to 25,000 k's. Let me drag out a few photos.....maybe the MV next time   ?

Out and about for a weekend ride
(http://i885.photobucket.com/albums/ac55/braando54/11072010762.jpg)

Around Sydneys 2000 Olympic site

A weekend o/nighter up The Oxley HWY

And at this years Italian Republic Day in Sydney.

And my "ringin"........great bike........next time eh.....!
