Title: Coffee lovers....

Some of the finest coffee I've ever had. I've tried several varieties from this roaster, but I can't recommend the organic Peruvian enough. It is, by far, the smoothest drinking coffee I've ever had. [coffee]

Haven't tried that.  We've got two local roasters, so I don't have to look hard to find a good blend ~

My favorite coffee from my favorite roaster:
http://www.alterracoffee.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=248&CategoryID=9&BaseID=2

If you tend to like acidic foods and drinks (tomato sauces, limes, crisp wines, etc.) like the wife and I do, then this is the coffee for you. It has high acidity and a is roasted lightly. It's like the anti-Charbucks. And at  $12/lb not stupidly expensive either.

I just get mine from a local independent coffee shop (Bean Street Coffee (http://www.yelp.com/biz/bean-street-coffee-san-mateo)), they really know their beans there.

My favorite coffee is Cubita.

Nearly impossible to by in the US because of the embargo, but whenever I know someone leaving the country to the carribean, I have them bring me back some.

We just brought back 5lbs of it from Grand Cayman.

I think the most overrated coffee is Jamaican Blue Mountain.

20$ for 12oz.

what a rip

Very nice!

We're lucky to have several roasters here in San Francisco. There's a new place called 4-barrel that's opening up two blocks from me...they'll be roasting their own beans, and serving espresso & french press.

I love this board...it's all about fine Italian machinery:

I bought a second Whirly Pop popcorn popper to roast beans in.  I got a pound of green beans from a local roaster and have tried 2 batches at home!  I still need to perfect the heat and timing, but it has been fun and tastes good.  I drink drip coffee and go through a pound of beans a week.

They have a shop in San Dimas.  I rode 36 miles round trip last week just to pick up some of their Ethiopia Worka beans... reminds me of Harrar, a real nice berry flavor, highly recommended.

I can't swing a dead cat without hitting a local roaster- I've tried!  (no I haven't)

Faves are Victor's Celtic Coffee- espresso roast and Sleepy Monk Coffee - organic espresso roast
Wholesale destruction of many a bean happens daily in my Gaggia Titanium.

The best morning cup is freshly ground beans and a bialetti moka pot that I got from my Italian friend. He also gave me Lavazza preground and it was just as good as fresh ground beans. Seriously. Anyway, I'm loving the moka. You can get it from kitchen shops like, but not necessarily at, williams sonoma and that kitchen shop.

I'm going through some beans I got from a monastery in the Philippines. They're a bit of 'eh', but still decent. The same friend who recommended and bought me my moka swears by Illy beans, which I'll do next.

Italians sure know they motorcycles and their coffee.

Coming from the Seattle area, you'd think I'd be all about Star*ucks, or one of the thousands of independent pseudo-bohemian coffee joints, right?

Welp, when I'm not chugging the slightly-above-par "coffee" at Barlee's Diner, I'm either drinking Chicory Coffee from down south (Cafe du Monde, or French Market), or David Lynch's coffee! Come on, the proceeds to go help teach transcendental meditation to children, maaan. http://ecomm.davidlynch.com/catalog/coffee.php

Cheers!  [coffee]

I've become a big fan of the Kauai Coffee Company.    I'm love the Kauai Blue Mt. Peaberry. The downer is, like the Jamaican Blue Mt it comes with the same premium price.  But hey, every time I drink a cup it brings my mind right back to the vacations I've had on Kauai.

If you're in Seattle, try the Bean and Bagel by the University. Went there all the time as a grad student. They're a bit ornery at times, but it's worth it. They have a multigrain bagels, which I haven't found anywhere else.

I can get it here... If you want me to ship it to you I can, don't know what that would cost.

A bottle of Absinthe was $12 to ship I don't see it costing more than that.

I'm quite fond of the local roaster's Jamaica Blue Mountain. Very smooth, almost like skim milk (no acidity at all but without any bitterness or typical dark-roast burnt flavour). At 55$ a pound it is an excessive indulgence though.

I live in SoCal and order this from Minneapolis, it's TO DIE FOR.   The Mexican Dark Roast is my favorite.  Absolutely delicious.

To the person that posted Alterra - props!  That's my second favorite (it's in Milwaukee, I am from Madison).

I know this is sacrilege to all my coffee snob friends who grow, pick, roast, grind & brew their own - but if you're like me and you use a K-cup machine...

I think Kenya AA Coffee by Green Mountain is the best thing going.

I’m pretty sure I've tried all the regular coffee (non flavored, non decaf - like many comedians have said "I like my coffee to taste like coffee") K-cups twice (both black and w/ cream & sweetener) and this one is tops in my book.

My close second, because I really like Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, is Coffee People’s Donut Shop Cofffee.

And, the owner (I think) whose name I can't remember, rides a 2000 M900 Dark.  ;D

At the risk of sounding like a total coffee philistine, I confess that I really like Starbuck's Sumatra beans.  I am happy to give my money to someone else for good coffee - who can recommend a supplier for a good, bold, earthy bean?  Even if I do it the injustice of grinding it with a blade grinder and brewing it in a 16-year-old Mr Coffee pot.  Also, how much work is it to roast coffee yourself?

Those are good, but I prefer my own that I dry and roast over a wood fire in a huge pila. I lived Kona side Hawaii in '87-88 and learned how to grow and process coffee. Moved to Boquete 6 years ago and learned from my Panamanian friends how to do it correctly. I was just staying in Punta Pacifico area at a friends house a few weeks ago. PC for me is like Honolulu, San Francisco, etc...fun to hang out in for a week, them it's time to get the hell out. Surfed yesterday at Punta Burica. I love it here.

Espresso is 'all' about the taste. Most folks think there's more caffeine, but that's not the case.  [thumbsup]

Kona coffee is good, but it's overpriced. Ka'u is a little stronger flavor. Deathwish Coffee Company is the one for me. First time I made I had a pot killed from 6am to 12pm, half of my shift. I could see sounds and smell colors. I've swore by it since. It's even better if you do a cold brew with it. Super smooth and strong as it gets.

Espresso has 5-6 times the caffeine as drip, per ounce. It's the difference in serving size that leads to the confusion.

In order to avoid this confusion, I suggest adding a shot of espresso to your coffee.   ;D

A shot of espresso is one serving.  6 ounces of American style coffee is one serving, though most people today are likely to down a mug significantly larger.  As said before, the darker roast has less caffeine, assuming it is the same bean.  In short, same amount of coffee, just less water.

I am more interested in the flavor than the caffeine count. Not to discount the pick me up....but flavor is more important.

Best coffee ever tasted? Jamaican Blue
Best coffee for day to day? Cafe Bustelo
Best brew method? French press

Worst coffee EVERY? The shit brewed at the station  :P

**These are all preferences, with no scientific basis beyond personal experience**

Roasting itself has little effect on caffeine content. The confusion (similar to serving size) is in volume versus weight.

Kicking Horse explains it best: "If you measure your coffee by scoops, light roasted coffee will have more caffeine. Since the beans are denser than a darker roast. However if you weigh out your scoops, darker roasts will have more caffeine, because there is less mass."

As far as espresso, the better roasters will list recommended dosage in grams.

A shot of espresso is one serving.  6 ounces of American style coffee is one serving, though most people today are likely to down a mug significantly larger.

For me, the pot is one serving...

Probably the best coffee I've ever had was some Brazilian Pilao I got from a friend of mine back in the early 2000's.  I ordered some since and it hasn't been quite as good, and, once, pretty much yuck.  I know there are differences in the growing seasons and years, but jeez...

Anymore, I just grind up and drink whatever my wife brings home from Starbucks.  No, I don't particularly rave about SB coffees, but she works there and gets it for free... so who am I to argue?  If I'm out and about, here in north Texas, both 7-Eleven and QT put out a decent cup o' coffee... if it's <30 minutes or so old.

That looks well built.

Love the fact that it's a manual grinder.

I have a little electric Westinghouse electric grinder with a small blade similar to a blender that beats the beans into submission and don't really care for it.

It's inherited so I shouldn't complain but it never gets used.

I would definitely use that  [thumbsup]

Use a burr grinder. That's what I use is a Mr.Coffee burr grinder. Has a nice hopper you pour beans in that is good for about 2 1/2 pots or so and has adjustable time for how many cups you plan on brewing, 2-24 I think and variable grind from espresso baby powder fine to french press coarse.

Traditional stove top espresso makers, the original and the best imo. [thumbsup]
I have a stainless piccolo two cup (Derringer), a stainless 4 cup 9mm and an monster stainless RPG7 sized 12 cup version. By cup I mean espresso cups. Halve that for normal coffee cups.
The alloy versions are cheap and leave a strange taste, so go for the expensive stainless type. I struggle to find new rubber seals unless I go to the local Italian Deli which sells them individually in various sizes.

Have you grown and roasted your own for over 12 years?

A new little shop in the home town:  https://205coffee.com (https://205coffee.com)

Just opened last fall is my understanding.  Their website doesn't list the beans they have (or much else).   I bought what was highly recommended.  "what everyone else buys".   It was really light.

Shoulda known.  Most people in that area when choosing a crazy spice for instance, go for the pepper shaker.  Not a region of epicurean adventure.   ;)

Thinking about giving vacuum/siphon brewing a try just for kicks.  Anyone have an FHE?

I'm an espresso snob, but thinking about revisiting drip on the weekends.

Sure seems like it. Cleanup's probably a pain too. But... many reviews I've read indicate it takes coffee to a whole new level, which leaves me wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze, so to speak.

Got a friend/co-worker who has one (if he can find it), so I might be able to take one for a test drive...

Has anyone here tried Turkish coffee?

I can’t seem to get it right

It’s crazy how the coffee is ground to a powder. It’s like flour. But it’s coffee.

I prefer Greek coffee! 😉

I'll drink Turkish or Greek coffee in a middle-east restaurant to go with the cuisine, but I really like espresso better.  Since Turkish coffee is brought to a boil three times it tends to get bitter.  Use a coffee that is bitter from the start and it gets real bitter.  You definitely want to use Aribica beans.  You also need a burr grinder, the blade mills will burn the coffee trying to get it fine enough.  Still too bitter?  Greek, same thing, but only brought to a boil once.  Or just drink espresso!

My burr grinder is incapable of grinding it fine enough. It won’t really go any finer than a good espresso grind.

I’ve got a DeLonghi espresso machine and I love it but enjoy trying different things. The videos on making Turkish coffee make it look so easy but I still can’t quite get it right.

Get white bread, butter it with pure, full butter, spread thinly, then moderately spread Turkish/Greek coffee powder over it and then sprinkle white sugar over it liberally. Adjust amounts to suit taste once you're "blooded in." [evil]
Kapow! Coffee bread. You'll never be the same. Try it and let us know how you go.

Been playing around with it...  Sort of.

Just using a small sauce pan...  Need to get a real cezve, which is why I am not getting the good froth.

Still tastes about right.
