Post by: LYD on May 13, 2008, 12:48:23 PM
I was at AMS A picking up a couple of parts and I was talking with Tony.  She askied if i would post something about the unveiling of the 696 on friday and Sat and both locations.  Friday they will be demoing the 696 in alvarado and Sat in dallas.  On Sat both places will have a BBQ.  [thumbsup]  [thumbsup]
Jeff and Tony will be in alvarado on friday and sat. they will be in dallas.

She said if you need anymore info check out the blog on the website:  http://www.advancedmotorsports.com/AMS-NEWS-AMS-BLOG-s/129.htm

Yeah, I got the mailer/invite the other day in the mail (...naturally) and I thought I would hit the Dallas store and check it out. I have to take the 916SPS back (shades of Cory's S4RS!) again to have the Evoluzione clutch slave installed. They forgot to do it when they were putting in the new clutch and figuring out the stalling problem. I didn't notice that the clutch slave wasn't on it until I got it home on the trailer. Oh well, it needs an inspection sticker anyway. I forgot to have them do it and they didn't notice.

I'll take the 916 in on Friday for the work and I have some "free time" on Saturday so I might go both days! Scott or Jordan will do a quick clutch slave install while I wait... hmmm, maybe I'll just have to do a test ride to help pass the time! [thumbsup]

I'm not sure when I will be heading down to Dallas/AMS on Friday. I've some stuff to do and I was going to play it by ear. Lisa, do you have something/time in mind??

Maybe around 9:30 or so... after the traffic smoothes out on 75... hopefully  [bang]     AMS opens at 10, right?

I haven't been to Motopia in a while but I've been meaning to so this would be a perfect opportunity.

The demo bikes will be in alvarado on friday, and sat they will be in dallas, but there will be bikes to look at on both days.

AMS needs to get their story straight. I dropped my bike off for the 7500 mile service today and Scott was thinking they wouldn't have a demo 696 available, just one for show. He said the flyer was misleading.  ???

Check out the carbon Termis.

http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/ducati/2009-ducati-monster-696-review-77793.html

I'm not sure about those Termis on the White 696.  Maybe Arrows or Zards will make something better.

Okay very disappointed, just called AMS and they have the 696's in but no demo bikes.  Hopefulluy they will have 1 for demo tomorrow in Dallas.  I am not going to make a trip today to go see them, (not really impressed with the new look) but I was going to go check it out and give it a spin.  Not today or this weekend.  Let me know if they have one for riding in dallas, should anyone make it over there.   :'(

i think he meant a 696 that he could actually ride, as opposed to just look at and touch...

i'll be there though to check it out tomorrow...may actually get there a bit early; brandi offered to drop me off but i'll be around 10 prolly.  i'll just have plenty of time to gawk at the bike.

If your thinking of the "Floor Salad" (KING Floor Salad -W-- a side of Patron, specifically) incident...
No edibles were regurgitated... merely a knee balance trick gone bad (In the middle of telling a good story -concentration briefly wandered...)

I did ask it be saved in a brown manilla envelope -we'll see...

If this was in reference to something James did... Well... I have (and probably don't want) any knowledge of it!

Just came from Dallas shop and it is there. I like it in person. Very nice tapered Termis on it, one per side. Its red and the split headlight looks pretty slick. Nice dash and startup light show. Clutch pull is superlight and the seat height is lower than my 1098 by 1-2 inches. Tailchop may be tricky. Can't tell how far back the frame structure goes. Would love to go for a spin.

I stopped by AMS today and checked out the 696. I think it's a lot better looking in person. It sounds great too with the Termi kit installed.

Ron the tail chop is just 2 bolts now. Giannis showed them to me under he beer tray.

my wife and i went by ams-a where they have the white one. she likes it alot. it was her favorite in the entire bldg. i like it alot and i think it's a great looking bike but i don't know if it satisfies my idea of a monster. it's very clean, white is defintely the color to get, love the gauges with the short windscreen, the way the exhaust mounts, just a very clean look for a naked. having said that i don't know if i am completly sold on the mirrors, headlight and turn signals yet. i look around the board(s) and think in my mind of how no 2 really seem to look the same but on that one i just feel as though the mods are limited. according to mark they almost all will have that look eventually. he says it has the power of the old 900's so maybe in due time i will come around. i do feel ducati has done a very good job of moving a product forward for the demographic they are trying to reach.
while we were there i showed her the red 848 and she said "NO!". showed her the 1098  and again "NO!" she doesn't like the white stripe on the black s2r 1000 and don't think red really fits my personality. of the two she preferred the black with the white stripe as do i so i think when it comes time to step up that will be the way for me.

yeah, thought it looked good overall as well; unsure if i would want to buy one, though (at MSRP, anyway).  that tail was so freaking long...and pointy.  no "tray" anymore.  i just wish the passenger pegs would have been set up a little more like the s2/4r...so you could just unbolt them.  and not sure if i liked the use of the older traditional style wheels on a bike that's so "new" and radical and advanced etc...would have thought the wheels would be edgier or something.

sounded great with the termis.

Should have stopped by on Saturday coming back from my ride. Looked like there was a lot of food and not enough "eaters"! I saw it on Friday when I was dropping off the 916 again (shades of Cory!) and Ron was picking up his 1098. I feel the same as him and the rest of you... it looks nice in person. Same was true of the 1098 at the Dec. '06 debut. Looked so so on the internet but kickass in person. Maybe the 696 isn't officially kickass but it looks good in real life, even better with the Termis. Just hope that isn't another $3,000 option on a $8,700+ "beginners" bike? :P Sure has received some good write ups from the Euro press release rides. I wouldn't be in the market for one but I'd love to take one for a spin.

Maybe I'll trade them my awesome but extremely fussy 916SPS for two 696s!! [laugh]

Imagine you're 16 and Sophia Loren is your girlfriend and she is being fussy cause you haven't given her the attention she wants.  The '16 is making you pay for what she perceives is not luvin' her enough.  Imagine, keeping her waiting in a room with other hussies!!!  Even if some of them are Italian, but really.

What's up Brian?

Some people have high maintenance wives or girlfriends (some have both! :P)... I have a fussy, high maintenance, "my motor is too hot rodded to be streetable" kind of a bike. I'm seriously going to try 105 octane race gas and see is she likes that. It still stalls at idle, even though Jeff has jacked the idle up to 1,800+ rpm! Heck I rev it up to 2,000+ rpm using the throttle at intersections so it won't unexpectedly die on me. And with 110 decibel race Termis you can imagine the loud bump-a-thump rap music I can drown out at stop lights from pimpmobiles! ;D It will not hold a steady rpm at cruising speed, say 45mph down the street, without the motor bucking, spitting and surging. The ONLY time she's happy is when your stretching the throttle cable tight and rowing through the gears. Sounds like fun? It's not at least on the street. You end up gassing it up then coasting, gassing it up then coasting down the street to maintain a steady "no ticket" speed and avoiding the buck/spit/surge. All the "Daytona" motor work was revealed to me after I bought the bike, then I broke my neck so I didn't really know how it ran until late last year. I swear I would love to pull the stock 13,000 mile motor out of the 996S and put it in the 916SPS. At least the clutch is good, the new 1098 stock dry clutch works great. One hassle down, one more to go! It's a work in progress. As Billy Crystal used to say on the old Saturday Night Live "It's better to look good than feel good baby!" And the 916 looks killer! [evil]

At some point in the conversation with Jeff, expect him to say, "Just ride it like you stole it" [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

I feel your pain (Bill Clinton, 199?).  My bike is very stock but even then, it will throw a fart on decel before you come to a full stop and any attempts at keeping her at 4K rpm or slightly lower and the bike will do its own imitation of a lap dance (not that I am very familiar with those things mind you.  It just seemed like it'd be a good visual).

The SPS has twin injectors and from the beginning, those injectors don't seem to work with each other well in that rpm range.  But they give you the fuel you need to hold power all the way to 11,000 rpm unlike the single injector 996s.  Your big ass motor mods however maybe exacerbating the problem.

Call me if you want to hear a serious possible solution.

Maybe I'll trade them my awesome but extremely fussy 916SPS for two 696s!! [laugh]

You are right again Charles. The 916 injectors are the Ducati equivalent of a "door slammer" Pro Stock drag racer's high rise manifold and dual four barrel carbs the size of trash cans! They scream on the top end and eat 10 gallons of fuel in a quarter mile but do not idle or run 20mph in a school zone! My 916 motor makes more power than my full Termi/DP ecu/dyno tuned 999. It's a 800lb gorilla of a 916! It just doesn't work well on this planet. It would be a monster (no pun intended! ;D) of a track day motor. How much fun would it be to pass 999s on the straights all day long? [moto] I'm sure it can be made rideable... somehow. It's not like it's a daily commuter, she's a garage beauty queen that needs to be ridden on special occasions (like setting off car alarms!) on sunny days in the company of other Ducatis. As I said, she is a work in progress.

ps  James, I thought you wanted me to leave you the 996S in my will? Now you want both?? Jeez... [cheeky]

pss  Charles, it just dawned on me... are you going to suggest the cross country trip to the midwest to the secret bat cave where you got your scoot sorted? ;)

I hope you keep her as my bike would really enjoy the company even if she can't keep up.

Yes.  I have been thinking about bringing the Monster up there for a tune up and would love the company.
