Title: A sad story indeed
Post by: cdc on May 15, 2008, 04:54:35 PM
Anybody remember this guy Anthony Gobert "The Go Show"?  Brian, I know you do.  When he was in AMA he was brilliant.  He would not practice on Friday and just win the race on Sunday.  He put on weight just to see how fat he could get and still win.  He was wild but extremely talented.  He had a drinking problem when he rode for Vance Hines Ducati race team.  Now he is a thief.  So sad.

Actually I think it was Gobert that brought Ducati up on my radar; I stumbled across a televised AMA race one afternoon and there he was on a Vance and Hines screaming red Ducati.

Unbelievable rider AND beautiful motorcycle.  And now, ten years later, lower than low.

Wipe out  :'(

There's a lesson to be learned in there somewhere...

He rode with team mate Ben Bostrom who had just moved to Ducati after winning the AMA Superbike for Honda.  He won the Australian Superbike against Mat Mladin I think.  He won a WSBK race riding a Bimota in the rain.  It was said that he was a kind of rider that could ride despite a less than perfect setup and win.  He did not finish the season with Vance Hines.  I think, he did not show up for a couple of races and they were forced to let him go.  He has a brother in AMA, Aaron but I'm not sure he is around anymore.  I could be wrong.  I don't follow the AMA series since Suzuki will win it again anyway.

That is sad to hear about Anthony's troubles. Sounds like either a functional mental illness or drug/alcohol problem... or a combination. Aaron currently rides the AMA Supersport and Formula Xtreme classes for Rockwall Honda... yes, that Rockwall. They both were world class riders in their day.
