Title: Decision - Sport 1000 - Eyes peeled, people!
Post by: Ideapimp on May 24, 2008, 06:46:41 AM
After much deliberation with the wife, I think we've finally come to the decision that the Sport 1000 is the way to go. Unfortunately, $12,000 for a new one is just way too outta our price range. For those of you who've seen my backyard, you know I have a lot of landscaping and deck extensions yet to put in. I simply can't afford to dump that much money on an expensive toy.

That being said, I'm on the lookout for a used one that might afford me a little breathing room. Something I could possibly pay cash for. The target is $6K - $7K. Now, I know that probably won't happen, but I'm talking with a guy in Sante Fe who's selling one for $7500. So I know that getting CLOSE to that is at least POSSIBLE.

What I'm asking is are peeled eyeballs. If you're kicking around eBay, or surfing Craigslist, or even the local paper and come across one lemme know.

I NEED AN '07 OR '08.

2up is a big preference right now. Preferably black, but the yellow is growing on me. I could POSSIBLY and I mean BIG POSSILBY be talked into a one seater, but I don't think wifey would like that.  :-\

I'm looking, too...hard. But I figure many sets of eyes are better than two. Thanks, all! A fewrounds of free beers to whoever finds her.  [thumbsup]

Nice find but no way that dude would let a 2007 "S" with 800 miles go for what Ryan is wanting to spend. Great bike, stock, with super low miles so it's worth what he's asking. Ryan, you might find a solo seater ('06) for around your price with some miles and a desperate to sell owner but the wife would hate you. We'll help you look. Who knows... ?

Hey, the current bid on that ebay bike is $6100.00 and there's not a reserve.

Just bid your highest and keep your fingers crossed (if you like it that is).

Ryan,

This may be of no interest to you, but there is a new listing on ebay motors (ducati section) for a 2006 black Sports 1000 with 2,900 miles on it. It's in Grand Prairie at Storm Cycles. It just showed up in the last day or so and has one bid. As for your lack of interest: it is the '06 solo seat model and it has been dropped and slightly scrapped up. Not bad from the pics just not pristine. Could be made pristine with a little work and minor money. Ditch the busted flyscreen, new rt/frt turn signal and horn, switch to aftermarket exhaust or have stockers recoated... ?? Just keeping my eyes peeled as directed. [thumbsup]

fastwin

PS  would also make an awesome track day bike for someone who doesn't have to have the latest and greatest Ducati SBK!! Could be had for a great price I bet. [moto]

"...involved in a low speed fall appx 15 - 20 mph..."

I'd be seriously concerned about the possibility of a bent frame on that one.  Plus, there's no mention of The Red Key  :-[ Anyway, would an insurance company total the bike with JUST the damage shown?  Shifts me back towards the bent frame idea...

Just my .02 cents.

Plus, there's no mention of The Red Key

The newer bikes don't have a red key (at least the 1098's don't), but I don't know what year they changed that.

Jeez, you'd think they'd at least just take that windscreen off and maybe replace the headlight before they put it up. Hmmm. I'll ponder for awhile.

While on the topic of that ebay bike with a salvage title, I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with buying a bike with a salvage title, and/or a rebuilt title.  What are the rammifications in TX owning a bike with a salvage title, or just titling one you buy from out of state?  Has anyone here ever done it?  Also, I'm guessing that there are probably some challenges/limitations on getting insurance on a bike with a salvage or rebuilt title - which might make it a challenge to legally using the bike as a street bike?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks!

My '99 BMW K bike has a "rebuilt" title. It's no problem putting the title in your name, either salvage or rebuilt.
It still has to pass inspection, but that's just blinkers, lights, horn, tread depth, etc...
If it has a "salvage" title, you can fill out a form with receipts & stuff proving you have done the repairs, then you can move up to a "rebuilt" title.
I've had full coverage on the bike (Comp/Collision) since I bought it.
It generally lowers resale value, though.
Easy squeezy [thumbsup]

One more thing; before I bought my 620, I ended up looking at a bike over there at that dealership in Grand Prarie that is listing the salvage title bike.  All of their bikes at that time - and they had about 20 - were in poor to fair condtion.  Most, if not all were crashed or rashed in one way or another, and the prices even then seemed kinda high for what they were...

Didn't inspire much confidence.  Of course, your results may vary  ;D

I think I have heard that begining in 2008 Ducati dumped the whole red/black key thing as a money saving issue. In the past if you lost the keys (red key especially) you were totally screwed. I was told you would have to spend $2500+ on a whole new instrument pod and associated key/ignition switch hardware. :P I may have the exact specifics wrong but Brian Sharp (ex of AMS) told me that in person and he wouldn't lie. He spent 10 minutes on the subject when I got my 2005 999.

Hummm....  in 2008 Ducati "dumped" Pierre (Okay, reportedly under HIS initative, but still, he IS gone)
With Pierre in control the RED key came into power.  Pierre left -it left.

I have a friend* who is REALLY into conspiracies who would easily see the connection between...
RED keys, the numbers encoded in them, and the evil dark lord SATAN.

..Hey, look what he did to the Supersport.   It's possible.

* ...actually, I think my Mom would see it too, but she does spend a little too much time in church.

Willing to travel or ship?

There's a 2007 SC1000S on ebay in Milwaukee.  800 miles on bike, clear title, ends around 11:00PM tonight - no reserve and bid is currently only $6,200.

The SC1000S's don't seem to be holding their value too well (based on what I've seen on ebay over the last few weeks).  Good news for anyone looking for a 2007+ Sport Classic.  Bad news if you're looking to buy for investment purposes.  :-\  If previous 1000S auctions are any indicators, this one probably will sell for under $7000.

Yeah, I've been watching it. Seems like a nice one. Thought I wasn't really looking at the S and I'm not really a red bike kinda guy. I'm still watching the auction. We'll see how it pans out.

True, but the Oklahoma bike is a year newer and has fewer miles (mine's got 28,000  [evil] ).  And it's still got the tail  :o

Word with what Lisa said earlier, and Bryant too.  I loved my monster.  I loved it so much I rode it until it died.  [laugh] [bang] [moto]

Honestly, out of owning an M620, a 749s, and a 996, the M620 was by far the most fun, and the most customizable bike to have.  And it is way more comfortable than you might think it is, esp. if you put a set of nice handlebars on it.  The monster is a bike you literally can take and make it ALL your own, and still never look exactly like anyone else's.  Example:  Lisa's (then Scott's, now Lisa's again) 620.  You can just trick the HELL out of those bikes.  So much fun, and the cool little odds and ends you can find for it to bling it up a little bit just never stops coming.

I say go with the 620.  Just like Svoloch said, lowball the guy, the worst he can do is say no.

but if you do get a 620, get some nice clipons and cafe it out....  Lisa's look's awesome, but she is about to butcher it back to comfortable ;)  Of course, even afterward, it will still be a killer bike.  Very fun to ride, and the powerband is deceptive, especially with a great set of pipes on it.

Still, I'm liking the SC1000s, don't know why they are going for so cheap, but i'd take advantage of it.  The dual spark air cooled 1000s are very fun, and the look of the SCs is all cafe....

Storm Cycle still had that Black '06 SC 1000 a few weeks ago, 3K miles, $5800. Granted a salvage title and no red key but all it needed is a headlight glass. The headlight/speedo mount was broke but could be easily rigged I thinks. If it's still there, he's had it for a few months.

Check earlier in this thread, someone already mentioned it.

Also, check my reply. I need an 07 or 08 for the 2up style seat.

Thanks though.  ;D

but if you do get a 620, get some nice clipons and cafe it out....

Dude, I'm not going to butcher it,

Randy is  [evil]

But yeah, Joseph brought up a good point - a Monster of any vintage has so many after-market totally trick parts that I'm fairly certain crack would probably be cheaper in the long run.

MONSTER!  You know you want to  [evil]

If only it had the dry clutch...sigh.

Seriously consider the 2006 SC1000.  Dry clutch.  Monoposto, true.  But how often are you REALLY gonna be riding two up?  And if it's that often, get her a monster and you an SC1000!

Finally, if you really must have room for a passenger, there are a few people who have successfully converted their 2006 into a biposto using a seat and cowl from an 07/08.  Total cost under $500, plus some fabrication for passenger pegs.  Otherwise, not that difficult to do.  I've wanted to do it for some time, I just can't find a biposto for "the right price" to entice me into actually starting the project.

Hey, all our Monsters look different. If you leave yours stock we will all poke fun at you until you change something and make you park away from our bikes. ;D Seriously, I know you're hot for the SC1000 but leave your mind open to the S2R line up. As I have said before, as good as the Sport 1000s are they haven't sold very many, regardless of the year/model. There are tons of S2R 800 and 1000s out there and a TON of parts. You could hold all the aftermarket parts for SC1000s in both hands... and still have room for your keys and sunglasses. Again, the S2R bikes will solve the two up crisis and you can pop the seat cowl back on and unbolt the passenger pegs for the cool loner solo look in about two minutes. [moto] I am lucky to have both bikes but if I was in your situation I'd be leaning Monster. You can't loose either way! [thumbsup]

Strange that you mentioned this tonight. I just got an email from the guy who's bike I'm drooling over in Santa Fe. It's a Sport 1000, yellow, PERFECT condition. I asked if it was an 07 or 08, turns out it's an 06...

I won't argue with that. I'm really excited to get a bike, but whether I'm wait around or not I keep running into this mutually exclusive situation.

I want:
1 - Sport 1000
2 - biposto
3 - dry clutch.
Basically, I'm allowed 2 of the 3 things. I can have 1 and 2, but not 3. I can have the 1 and 3, but not 2. And I can have 2 and 3, but not 1 (SR2).

I actually spoke with the wifey last night who told me she really didn't care if I got a monoposto, but I think it'd be fun to be able to carry her on it occasionally. It really comes down to what I'm willing to give up. OR I look at converting the '06 Sport 1000 to a biposto. Anyone ever seen one of these mythical beasts?

Get the monoposto, you want to the solo seat time before you start 2up riding.  2 up really changes the way the balance of the bike

I agree with B8. Quite frankly, I have never liked riding two up that much. In 1989 my first wife and I rode two up on a Kawi Concours all over the Alps for over three weeks. Great trip... no, f'ing awesome trip... but I spent every single moment wishing I was solo on the bike. Just do what I did, scare the living shit out of your wife so bad she will NEVER get on a bike again. There, problem solved. Now, go get that '06 SC1000. [laugh]

Yeah, I for sure want to log the miles by myself first. But I want her to come to our meetups and there's something cool about rolling up on the group with a hot girl riding behind you.  [thumbsup]

That being said, lemme head off the next point of discussion. No, I can't afford to get her a bike as well. Not for awhile.

Not terrible. I like the pegs on the second one better.

Yeah, the first one (yellow bike) involved a home-made rendering of the "fan" and attachment of a peg he got off ebay.
The second one (Paul Smart) involved taking some parts off of an Ducati 999, I believe.  Cut off those black pieces, including the pegs as seen in the picture, cut to length and fabricated the necessary holes in these pieces to mount to the PS frame.

So, there are all sorts of options.  I believe finding and buying the biposto seat is the hardest (and most expensive) part.  About $250-$300 for the seat.  The rest of the parts are cheap (less than $50) depending on how much fabrication you want to do yourself, or how much Frankensteining you want to do sourcing and adapting parts from other bikes.

If you're asking which I like....well, purely aesthetically, and clutch-wise I think I'm gonna have to go with the '06. I love the swingarm, the shocks, the cleaner rear. From what I understand it's actually the better rear end, performance-wise.

The wife seems pretty on board with it. Though I'd imagine I'll have to get her something to ride with me in a few years. I'm ok with that.  [thumbsup]

What about this:

http://www.advancedmotorsports.com/product-p/demo%202007%20ducati%20gt1000%20red.htm

To make it look more sporty you can remove the rear fender and relocate the tail light/license plate/turn signals like Jim has done on his bike and change the handle bars to clip ons.  It is a wet clutch but also a DS1000 motor like the other Sport Classic series bikes.  Same frame, different tank and seat (obviously biposto).  Maybe AMS will take less than the $8000 asking.  Offer them $7000 and see if they go for it.

Also, I saw an '08 Sport Classic GT 1000 with the new paint scheme and it really makes the GT a lot smaller and more compact looking which makes it look sportier too.

That's a good buy as long as it didn't have a bent frame or forks. But the apparent damage did not look very serious at all. Not bad enough to worry about. Besides I just happen to know a guy with a brand new set of stock Sports 1000 forks with zero miles on them!
