Title: High Mileage Monsters!
Post by: EverettShadowbrook on October 26, 2010, 07:50:38 PM
Hi All.

I'm new here and recently purchased a 2000 m900ie. This is my second bike and so far it has been amazing! The mileage on my new duc is "high" compared to other Monsters we all see for sale. I currently have 33,000 miles. The bike runs great and all service has been timely and documented.

Just wondering how many other "high" mileage Monsters are out there?

Also, what is the average yearly mileage on our bikes?

Thanks in advance.

There's a handful of high-milers.

At least one guy who used to be on the forum (or at least TOB) had over 100K.

Phil Bonzer

Last I heard, he was over 140,000 miles and counting.

I think the resident high-miler is IZ.

But we're still not sure how many miles he's logged as we can't read the pics of his 620's odometer.

IZ and Howie are the biggest numbers on the board as far as I know. I've got 31.5 on my 900 and climbing, so I've got a ways to go.

26.5K on my 05 620 Monster, nearing the end of my second season.
Averaging ~9K per year (April - Nov).

Not hi mileage, hopefully it will be, I plan to commute and fun run on it for years,
it's a great little bike.

Thanks for the input everyone. Good to know I'm not the only one with a monster that has actually been ridden.

Everyone with 40K +...Have you had to do any major engine work to keep your monster running? If so, at what mileage did you have to pull the motor and rebuild?

Thanks again

mine was a 620 that i ripped apart at 56k to put a 900 in, completely disassembled the 620 and was suprised how good everything looked, mine at least didnt have anything that really needed replaced. I did chance the clutch out once at 30k ish but that was it.

hadn't had to do nuttin....had MBP collets put in to help minimize the need for valve servicing...hadn't had to have em reshimmed since those went in....

Pulling the engine at 40k miles would indicate unusual wear or perhaps that the bike has been used as a track bike.

Mine?  Gas, tires, oil and belts.

Almost 50K on my DM620 2004.

Average a year - 6K or so  (not this year, as I already put 10K on my other bike while monster is in shop)

Maintenance - I think about 3 or 4 valve checks , 1 fork seal replacement , had shifter spring (i think) that broke and had to replace it at 30K , fuel pump replaced , oil filter replaced , upgraded suspension (worthless waste of my precious $) , engine (same not worth it) , lots of oil leaks as always, added oil filter at 20K... and so on and on.  Other than that, she has been good.  :-)

Needs major tune up work.  Thought about rebuild but found out that is way too expensive to do.  May consider swapping engine if I can find low mile wreck engine I guess.  Otherwise, I will get her tuned this winter and keep on riding her.

'01 S4, it's coming past 22,000.   Still on the original plugs and belts I assume.   10,000 miles in a year and a half.   I'm sort of ashamed.   A couple of oil changes and that's it.   I guess it's about time to take a look/see inside.

Wouldn't be a bad idea at all to throw some new belts on pronto just to avoid the possibility of a big repair bill.

If by a look-see you mean and valve inspection and new belts, that would be a really good idea.

So that would be about 5,000km per year? That sounds about 'normal' to me. As a 'weekend warrior' I have done a bit more than that. Unfortunately the reason many people sell is because they have very little kms (oh OK miles) on the clock ... they don't use the bike so they sell it.

33,000m seems 'appropriately used' ... and well maintained by the sound of it.

okay, she has/had her Honda Hawk GT/NT650(which it seems wasn't being ridden regularly or maintened with any real love out there from what I understand)...I had the 98 track bike and the 01 street bike...I also had all the tools and the large screen TV and all manner of stuff that she was equating dollar number values to even though she didn't want them....so when she threw a $ figure at me, I replied with offerring her the bike and my beater car (which she drove regulalrly before she relocated, so she knew how solid and bulletproof it was) and I think she intepreted as an "either/or" and said she'd take the bike like it was a choice between the two( I convinced her that the value that she had personally assessed to the track bike was way off due to the lack of anything streetable on it and the money it would take to rework, reconfigure, and rebuild it to street spec for to gain anything close to the value she had assessed)...so she got the bike only...

the kicker is this...she had already relocated to L.A. ( I am in MD outside of DC) and was back to get the rest of her shit that she wanted out of the house before it got turned over( since she forced us to lose our house in this process)...I prepped the bike for shipping and was going to help her ( for a nominal fee for time and gas) to get the bike to a Forward Air or other shipper of her choosing so she could have the bike transported out to her...she said at the time she couldn't have it shipped right away and I told her I had no way to securely store it...so she had me drop it off at a mutual friends house...so I did so...drained,unhooked and ready for transport...at the time, it needed a couple of things, but that was to be her responsibility...well here we are 2.5 years later and I think it is still at his place (20 mins away from me) sitting in neglect and I think he has since put gas in it and hooked the battery back up and started it and looked at things and tried to compare them to his his 72 Mustang...and I think she has told him to try and sell it for way more than it is worth, especially given the atrophy it has suffered and the level of care it needs now moreso...

[/end tangent]

If some of you remember Rachel the gal who did the IronButt Marathon years ago on her Monster (and lots of other long distance events with her Monsters) -- last count was @94K on her M750 before she got hit and the bike totalled.  Her "new" S2R800 broke 100K only a few weeks ago.  These of course are just her "weekend" riding machines -- she commutes daily on another motorcycle to save the wear/tear on the Ducati.

Typically Rachel is downstairs at the Bellevue, WA -- Eastside Ducatidealership on Saturday mornings working.  Say "hi" to her next time you are there.

35K mi. on my scoot (s4rs), but I had to sit out almost a year due to intense pain from a femur that gave out on me and had to get a new Ti hip.

My surgeon still calls me an organ donor.

I'm nearing 8,000 mi. on the 1100..bought it in Feb.

Unfortunately, it's now taking longer to hit that triple digit mark on the 620.

48,200 mi. on 2012 (bought 6/11) 1100 evo. All the regular services (they don't sell a motorcycle, they sell a series of service appointments) but needed to replace a stator (just after the warranty expired) and a clutch slave cylinder. Seems to be running very strong, no oil use, etc.

Had 49k miles on the 2006 S2R1000 before it threw a bearing last September.

Bought an M821 on September 29th 2015, currently has just under 15k miles.

All my mileages are current in my signature. The M900 has been pretty darn reliable and of course it still puts a smile on my face. But truth be told my Victory KP has been as good as it gets,  110K miles with NO repairs ans still wins an occasional bike show award. - Gene

My old bike is still running, saw it last week.  Original engine, the only engine repairs being valve guide seals and one flakey rocker.  Original (wet) clutch.
