Title: Talk me out of buying an Alfa
Post by: duccarlos on March 25, 2011, 01:56:52 PM
I will be moving within the next few months to Chile. As many know, it takes me forever to buy a car, since I endlessly compare and rethink everything. At first I was thinking about a GTI, small and fun that I can drive to work every day. Then I realized that they sold Alfas in Chile. I looked at a photo and instantly wanted! The Brera would be the model I would get. I'm asking my European "interwebz friends" to talk me out of it. I'm sure it will be overpriced and lacking in terms of reliability. I need more. Horror stories would be preferred. Talk me into the mre sensible GTI.

Don't do it!!!!!

There. Did that help?  :)

(the Brera is hot, IMO)

I agree, the Brera is very nice looking car.  Plus, no true motor-head can live their life without owning an Alfa and experiencing the utter suffering that goes along with it.

Thank you Top Gear for gushing over the GTI. I can now sleep at night.

Is that the new version of the R32? I did not find it on the local site, so I assume it is not.

This car is going to be replacing the Monster, since it seems that riding a bike in Santiago is apparently very dangerous. So I need to replace it with something relatively practical and fun.

Post by: DRKWNG on March 25, 2011, 03:10:34 PM
It's the new top-end Golf, but not really an evolution of the R32.  It's gone to the same two liter turbo motor that Audi uses in the S3, and with a good bit larger turbo than the GTI has.  It's AWD as well, so it's able to harness the 260-270 hp it makes.

the new Alfas are not problematic and are very nicely designed.

if you were going to get an early 70's GTV, i would first ask if you enjoy prison sex.  cause that's about what ownign that car is like.  of course, sometimes you are on the giving end and it's a hoot to drive.

Alfa =

warped head
torque heads every 15K miles
leaking front caliper
rear breaks that need to be adjusted every 2000 miles
alternator lasts only two years
wheel alignment is good for only 3 hours and that's before you even drive it
no heat to the floor area
replace the water pump as soon as you buy the car

BUT all this disappeared when you started that make the beast with two backser up!

It's like falling in love with a crazy stripper........................

Carlos I think that Alfa produce some stunning looking cars but over here in the UK the cost of ownership is quite alarming as they do seem to loose thier value quickly, I personally like them but to my mind you'd have to be very wealthy in respect that you could afford to loose that kind of money... [bang]
Babs has a 2.0tdi VW golf and the build quality is 1st class and the gas mileage which is very important in the UK ($8 a gallon) is fantastic plus the value of second hand golfs is always top dollar... [thumbsup]

Sorry Tini, it's a done deal.

You know you want the Alfa.  Buy it and love it.  Take good care of it and it will be fine.

The Alfa of today isn't the same company that made my 1970 GTV.

So the only reason I could think of would be that the backseat was none existing. I have 3 kids and should be able to at least fit 2 back there.

Outback get slightly better mileage but the Forester is much roomier and has a better suspension

The outback has a six spd tranny and lower profile which gives it the mpg edge but the foresters shape gives more headroom and cargo space in the back.  I think the forrester ha. Four speed trans but a much beefier suspension

Damn that's a good looking car!!!!!  I'd fall for it in a heartbeat.

Here's my advice (please keep in mind I'm a formaer Alfa owner.)

Go buy yourself a nice Honda, Toyota or Nissan.  Also buy a good sized rubber mallet.  And pickup a sales brochure for the Alfa. Every time you get into the reliable car and wish you bought the Alfa pull out the brochure, stare at the beautiful Alfa, pull out the rubber mallet and give you left hand a good whack!

Before buying the Alfa pickup an Italian dictionary and look up their version of reliability.

Here's what a typical owner and Alfa relationship is like:

Anyone have a new 4C?  I'm curious if all the Alfa folklore is true with the new models?

Before I bought my Monster all I had ever heard was "Ducati's are crazy expensive and super-unreliable" -both of which are not exactly true.  I've found Ducatis to be pretty reliable as long as you perform maintenance (but the maintenance is a little more frequent than a japanese equivalent).

I owned a few Alfas back in the day, an Alfetta with the 1.6L, an Alfasud 1.5L, a Giulietta 1.6 > these I had here in Panama, aprox time of each with me was about 1 year, resold for profit[somehow] and in Germany I had, as "loaner" a 155 with the 'odd' 1.7L 8V engine, it was fun to drive, it was torquey too . . . Since I've owned VW Santana wagon 1.8L carb, Peugeot 405Mi16x4 and 405Mi16 GrN, VW Jetta A2 with the "Redhead" 1.8 16V engine, a short lived Fiat Uno Turbo, a Toyota Corolla AE86 with the 1.6 16V engine and also a short lived 1988 MR2, a Nissan Terrano TD2.7[Pathfinder in the US] . . .

Since, MY LAST owned by me car, we've had the Mitsubishi Galant VR2.5 and the Suzuki Swift 1.5 ZC21S

I owned a 74 GTV exactly like this one for two years (79 & 80).  Loved that car, drove it coast to coast twice.  When I bought it, I installed a new clutch and had to take it to the dealer to have the MFI sorted out (there was a gas-filled bulb that compensated for altitude or something, which had deteriorated).  I also replaced the shocks with Bilsteins, which helped reduce that body roll when cornering.  It burned some oil (worn valve guides @ about 60k miles); but, I put a lot of trouble free miles on that car, until my GF totaled it.

Probably a dual mass like many German cars.  Could be "over run" in the computer, like in my buddie's 2014 (I think) Jetta.  Let off the throttle and the revs stay up like the throttle kickers back in the 70's.  Annoying as hell.  Either way, I'm sure there will be fixes.  I do suggest a thorough test drive before buying any new car with a manual transmission.

I was paying more attention to how long it took to rev up after the throttle opened. Seemed like seconds.

If it doesn't have the throttle response of a rotary, I frown.

Ah, I noticed that too.  Most modern cars will no longer eagerly free rev in neutral.  Mine would flatten out at about 3K RPM before the computer flash.  Keeps dumb asses (including dealer techs) from blowing them up.

It's a mighty struggle.

A dozen years ago, the accounting guy at the place I worked had a nice, stock GTA.
Made me crazy every time he brought it in.
I was commuting 600 miles a week to that job, so it made it good bit easier to resist.

After 6 1/2 years...

are you over it?

don't waste money on a GTI, I had a 05 and put about $8K under the hood of that car and it was still "Slow" to my standards and others, I put $2k into my AWD Turbo eclipse and would do circles around that GTI. but if you want something with good gas mileage and handles pretty well around corners and can afford the up keep (which, im guessing if you own a Ducati then you can probably afford a GTI lol) then I say go for the GTI but don't waste money on upgrades lol

Had to get a new car a few months back and the Giulia was high on the list. I’m a BMW guy for the most part but I got all hot and bothered about getting an Italian Stallion. I show up for a test ride of a really nicely optioned Giulia, most importantly it was RED!! I read all the reviews stating the car wasn’t the most reliable piece of kit but soldiered on, and the price was pretty ridiculously low compared to what I would get in a BMW.

Get in the drivers seat, start it up and look around the cabin. It was a beauty for sure. Put it in gear and it dies!! Won’t start, won’t even turn over. This is a brand new car with 25 miles. I’m immediately put off but the sales guy talks me into testing another one. It was ok, but not anywhere near the performance envelope of the 3 series BMW, at least what you’d get out of a test drive.

Headed back to BMW and picked up a used 2 series and couldn’t be happier!

Now, if I could pick up one of these classic Alfas as a weekend toy, I’d be all over it!
